Let me just make sure I've got this right in my head...here comes another bonehead question, but I just have to satisfy my OCD.... : Let's say a Fighting-Man is at 3rd level. This means when he strikes with any normal weapon the damage dealt will be THREE six sided dice? Then at fourth level it would be four dice, then at fifth it would be five dice +1. Right? How does this work for other classes, say, a Magic User? Thanks so much everyone!

Ummm, not the way we or Gary interpret it.
Some people think he should roll three attacks. Others think only three attacks if facing 1 HD creatures. Some say no extra attacks until level 4. Some never give an extra attack. But I have never seen the interpretation as damage dice.
Now maybe in Chainmail, where each figure rolls a dice, he would roll 3 times

Okay, perfect! Thanks Makofan....I was confused because of the Chainmail supplement....I got it now, no problem...I'm sorry: it's an ignorant question to ask I suppose, but I'm trying to switch over from AD&D and i'm getting muddled sometimes!

Hey Dogbreath. I think it's a bit confusing coming from AD&D and all those variable weapon damages to just d6. I was lucky to have read on another board that OD&D was d6 damage only and that's what brought me really into it. I loved the simplicty of the idea. The number of attacks and all the rest is open to interpretation, though I read it as 1HD or less and the same actually goes for monsters as well. ie: a 4HD ogre gets 4 attacks versus 1HD or less creatures.

I'm sorry: it's an ignorant question to ask I suppose, but I'm trying to switch over from AD&D and i'm getting muddled sometimes! It's certainly not an ignorant question ... keep in mind that OD&D is often vague and contradicting itself in places. As far as I remember, the LBB don't really say much at all about "Fighting Capability" and you have to look back into Chainmail to get a better understanding of what was intended.
