I need to have at least 20 of each of the "standard" dice: twenty+ 4-siders twenty+ 6-siders (with numbers, not pips) twenty+ 8-siders twenty+ 10-siders (numbered 0-9, none of that 2-digit crap such as 70, 80, etc.) twenty+ 12-siders twenty+ 20-siders (numbered either 1-20 or 0-9 twice) Also, I have come to HATE cute, fancy, hip, speckled, transparent, etc. dice. I want them to come in plain ol' SOLID colors: blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple, etc. And preferrably NOT INKED. The dice don't need to be pain-stakingly scientifically accurate (like Gamescience dice). Here is the sort of thing I'm looking for: All that said, does anyone have any suggestions for the best and/or cheapest way to get these dice? Any and all advice appreciated! ;D

I just bought three bags like those pictured in my first post: 300 dice for a grand total of $49.35, or only 16 and a half cents per die! ;D
That should average about 50 dice of each type.

Okay, but I gotta ask: What do you need all those dice for?

Okay, but I gotta ask: What do you need all those dice for? In my D&D (and Encounter Critical) games from now on I'm going to be using Zulgyan's method of rolling HD: Suppose the characters run into 3 giants each with 10 HD. I will then get 30 dice (6-sided or 8-sided, depending), and group them into 3 groups of 10. Then I'll roll each group of 10 dice and leave them lying on the table. I won't bother to total the dice or anything. Instead, as the giants take wounds, I'll simply take dice away from the table. When a given giant runs out of dice, he is dead. As Zulgyan noted, the 1974 D&D rules suggest owning 40 6-sided dice! As you can see, Zulgyan's method requires lots and lots of dice! I just hope I bought enough...

Are you using d4's for hit dice, then? Or d10's? I'm just curious.
And yes, I do very much like Zulgyan's method. I have a bunch of d6's myself (40? More like 60...)

I know that Castles & Crusades uses different sizes of hit dice. And Gary said once that he always wanted to use different sizes.
I'd like you to write up any experiences you have along those lines and share them with the group. That's be cool.

Since Encounter Critical is a gloriously small book, it will be almost like I'm carrying nothing to the game, except for my great mass of dice: Player: "What the **** is that?" Me: "It's my dice." Player: "What ya need all those dice for?" Me: "I need this many dice to roll the monsters' hit points." Player:

I also really like Zulgyan's method and have been vowing to use it, but it never occured to me that this would involve owning many more dice - perhaps because my OD&D experience has been sadly limited to lower levels.
In other words: woot! I get to buy dice!
And I am swayed to go with non-LBB d6 hit dice eventually in honor of Gary (it's easy to believe that they didn't recommend them in the beginning because finding non-d6s was so rare - my Holmes basic set still had chits you drew from a cup instead of dice), and because buying 40 d6 would be much less exciting than having that many polyhedrons of all kinds.

The dice pictured look to be softish plastic. With a hollow inside. Are they? I like my dice solid like a rock.

As you can see, Zulgyan's method requires lots and lots of dice! I just hope I bought enough... For only $10 more, I upgraded by order of 300 dice to a whopping 500 dice, consisting of: 60 4-siders 60 6-siders 80 8-siders 50 10-siders 130 12-siders 120 20-siders That's less than 12 cents per die! ;D
