Carcosan Cuisine

What fruits, vegetables, animals, and meals which are real are so ugly, disturbing, or mysterious, you'd not be surprised to see something like it in Carcosa.

I introduce this thread with Yams. Amorphous, subterranean tubers capable of becoming very large.

Although the fruit bodies of H. peckii have been described as resembling "Danish pastry topped with strawberry jam",[8] and Hydnellum species in general are not known to be poisonous,[33] they are inedible due to their extremely bitter taste.[8] This acridity persists even in dried specimens.

Which is a shame, because that would go well on an Carcosan buffet right next to raw Pyura.

A more apt fruit for the deadly Carcosan world might well be manchineel:

The tree and its parts contain strong toxins, some unidentified. Its milky white sap contains phorbol and other skin irritants, producing strong allergic dermatitis.[2] Standing beneath the tree during rain will cause blistering of the skin from mere contact with this liquid (even a small drop of rain with the milky substance in it will cause the skin to blister). Burning the tree may cause blindness if the smoke reaches the eyes.

The fruit is said to be possibly fatal if eaten, however, "fatalities from ingestion are not reported in the modern literature" (source 1991: Bygbjerg I.C. and H.K. Johansen: Manchineel poisoning complicated by streptococcal pharyngitis and impetigo. Ugeskr. Laeger 154(1), 27-28 (1991).) and "ingestion may produce severe gastroenteritis with bleeding, shock, bacterial superinfection, and the potential for airway compromise due to edema. Patients with a history of ingestion and either oropharyngeal burns or gastrointestinal symptoms should be evaluated for admission in hospital. Care is supportive." Ironically the people who have accidentally eaten manchineel apples say that they're very sweet and tasty. But then...!

Oh, the neat thing about bleeding tooth fungus - the "blood" seems to have anticoagulant properties! COOL.

Years ago I looked through a coffee table photo book of people all over the world eating bugs. It was crazy to see smiling little girls eating the nastiest looking critters. Anyway, I imagine the people on Carcosa eating a lot of arthropods.

YES.

This is the Coconut grub or Uok. They're as big as a man's thumb and they're eaten alive.

They grow into beetles which are destructive. Eating their larvae protects the coconuts.

Definitely there will be cannibals in my game; my players just haven't encountered them yet. But youu've just given me an idea for an adventure. Why did that tribe of savages save you from the velociraptors with lasers shooting out of their eyes? They wanted you over for dinner, literally.
