Hi there - I am wondering what people think the best issue of FO! to give away to interest people in the 'zine would be. It would be one of the best issues and one of the most representative both.
#1 is free in some places online already, but I don't consider it representative, because it's short, although I do like it.
#2, #5, #8, #12, and #14 seem like plausible choices. #6 is longer but might be a good choice too. What do people think?

I actually come back to 4 a lot, with The Tower of Duvan Ku, Fungoid Gardens of the Bone Sorceror, The House of the Ax and The Mysterious Crystal Hemisphere.

#4 is fantastic! But it is kind of Arduin focused - although as you point out there is a lot of other stuff in it too. Also we already gave away hundreds of copies, so that is something.

Seconding #4.
Failing that, I'd say #8, but issue 4 has a great variety of articles by some really big names.

I'm voting for #14 'cause I don't have it yet.

I vote for #3. Two great campaign settings, and my favorite cover.

I vote for #3. Two great campaign settings, and my favorite cover. I also vote for #3. The Wilderlands are an awesome taste of D&D.

I'm kinda partial to number 12, myself. But aside from selfish reasons, a more recent issue might seem more relevant to the uninitiated

#3 is this monster issue - it does have a lot of great setting stuff - I know some people whose judgment I respect found it 'bloated' - which doesn't take away from the quality of a lot of the material in there - but if you're saying "hey, here's this cool thing we're doing" it might be good not to overwhelm people with too much? Or maybe I'm over thinking this?
(I'm surely overthinking this. Occupational hazard.)
I was considering making both #1 and #2 permanently free as a way to show what we want to be to people. #2 contains the last interview Dave Arneson gave during his life, I think, and that would be something good to make public, even if we didn't get that deep.
It's great to come back to this and see that the magazine has held up so well in general. There's a lot of stuff in there I'd be just as happy to use today.

That is the truth!
FWIW, I think a)it's a great idea to make issues 1-2 permafree, and b)expanding on my pick of #3, to me, the combo of the Wilderlands and Fomolhaut is emblematic of the scope of both the magazine and Old School gaming itself.

If overwhelmingness is an issue, what about a “Best of Fight On!” smaller issue with a collection of representative articles from across the current run?

I wanted to do one of those to sell on Amazon, and maybe I will, but I would need to re-contact all the authors of chosen articles and secure permissions in order to do that.

Given that the quality of Fight On! is consistently very good I don't think there is a bad choice. I like the first four a lot, but i have them as the compilation so they sort of blur to me.

This far into publishing FO! I would suggest giving away a compilation of Volumes 1-4. As far as selling things going forward you should ask for permission to sell it on any venue that presents itself and as you have time go back and ask all previous authors for the same permission. I don't know what your current publishing deal is, but if I were an author I would be comfortable with you can publish anywhere you want to for a year and then after that we can both publish anywhere we want.

I can sell the existing issues on any venue that will sell them, but I can't re-use articles in other forms (like "best of" compilations) without getting new permissions. Basically, FO! has publication rights in perpetuity (in the issue they come out in, in the form they originally come out in) and authors keep ownership and all other rights.
Another good suggestion that was made by a friend off-line is that since in a way the free PDF is essentially click-bait to get people interested, I might want to use #8, since that's a fabulous cover by the great Erol Otus himself.
