I have a new player and he would love to play a bard. Any guidance?
Cheers in advance!

Ideally I'd love he's abilities to be like the thief's. You know 4 in 6. I love it, it's so elegant!

Hey discuit, there have been many interpretations of the Bard through the iterations of D&D. Perhaps a good place to start would be to write a plain English paragraph (no game stuff) that describes your bard. This will help to communicate your "expectations" of the class, and will probably be the basis of its opening blurb too.

It must Rock! j/k I still laugh with glee when I read the original bard from the Dragon...

Doug Schwegman's bard for OD&D was published in The Strategic Review 6 (p11), and then again in Best of Dragon (Vol I, p47).

The "Delving Deeper" Bard for Labyrinth Lord was pretty simple and could be converted to DD pretty easily and would be pretty fun to play.
Attack like a cleric, save as a thief, armor up to mail, any weapon, no shield.
Charm Person or Animal once per day per every 3 levels (Use 4 in 6 roll to determine if it works)
Legendary Lore (Determine info known about ruins or ancient items. 4 in 6)
Magic-User Scroll use at level 6 (4 in 6 chance)
That is a quick conversion but I think that works as a place to start.

Charm Person or Animal once per day per every 3 levels (Use 4 in 6 roll to determine if it works) Otherwise, you could use the Cleric Turn Undead Tables. For the Lore capacity, I would maybe do somemething like -Lvl 1-3: 5+ on 1D6 -Lvl 4-6: 4+ -Lvl 7-9: 3+ -Lvl 10+:2+

Otherwise, you could use the Cleric Turn Undead Tables. Now that is genius!
