I was a big fan of the Star Probe and Star Empires games. John Snider had also been running an RPG along with them. John and I were roommates in 1973, before he went into the army, so we played it alot (when we were not doing D&D or war games). The RPG was the part that never got published. I was given the manuscripts for the RPG part in 1983 and asked to edit it by Dave Arneson, who was then running Adventure Games. If it had been published in the mid 70's when John wrote it, it would have blown Traveller away, but by '83 it was too late to even have a chance in the market, so the project died after I finished the editing job.

Greetings to All...
I discovered your little end of the gaming universe (and such a nice one it is) from Dragonsfoot whilst poking about the OD&D forum (which is a mish-mosh of all the non-AD&D or 3e editions as far as I can tell).
I grew up on AD&D (started playing 1983-4) when I was 10 or so years old (actually Chill came first, but AD&D was close behind). I've played mostly 1e, no 3e (avoid like the plague, and I avoided 2e for 10 years before I gave in for one campaign) and have just recently discovered the joy of going back to roots with OD&D as I bring in a group of adult newbies or returning roleplayers.
I'm actually quite interested in OD&D as framework for a campaign setting I have dabbled in for years as it doesn't easily fit into anything else. That and the fact that I'm a sucker for the "classic" rpg styles. I'm a rules tinkerer these days, and I was looking for that "old familiar" with room for new material in that style... (my milieu concept is very historically based, with a heavy Otherworldly overtone - more on that elsewhere).
I'm glad to see this board exists.

Welcome. While I and many others on these boards are big fans of "Classic" D&D (B/X, RC, etc) as well as AD&D (both 1E and 2E), I think many of us have collected here because OD&D is so universal and easy to "house rule".
Thanks for joining up, and I hope you find some OD&D goodness that you like!

Hi, its my first post on this forum, waiting for D&D 4th edition ( Don´t flame me, i hate d20, but i want to know wath improvment to that sistem was done with the new edition), im planing to run a campaign with OD&D, yep i know it´s a strange thing, but as far i´ve read it i liked, my favorite edition is AD&D 1st edition, it´s strange that i brought the .PDF on drivethrurpg many months ago, but only recently i had time to seat and read this version of the game. ;D

Welcome aboard, ugrosh! Don't worry, hating other editions is not a prerequisite to hang out here. Most folks just talk about the game we all agree we like, rather than smack-talking the stuff we don't.

Hi gang I'm new to the D&D internet community, having discovered DF in January. I've been lurking here for a week or so, and I figured I'd better join in on the fun. Began playing D&D in the late 70's and I'm working on getting a new campaign off the ground with my old players. I recently decided I'd be using OD&D LBB only, with home brew elements. I've never been a 'by the book' DM, so I will try to not offend anyone's sensibilities with my various off the wall takes on D&D Anyway, I post over on K&K as well because I love the 'mega dungeon' sub forum there. /Cheers! ~Sham

Thanks all. And Crim I love that signature! That said, I still have a few questions/clarifications on rules interpretations. Not because I insist on playing by the book, but because I'd like to understand the OD&D rule conventions a little better (I'm trying to use the LBB without Chain Mail).

Howdy, Thought I'd see what this bastion of goodness had to offer. I play in an OD&D game going on four years now. I've got the same character since the beginning and was sad to see go another original character just a weekend or so ago. He died from his own treachery attempting to kill a half-ogre and its' dwarven mistress. That'd be Grog from Dungeon #4. He and my PC were both 5th level. That's after 52 sessions of play. We're getting up there. Getting ready to pretty much save the whole county and central city from an invading goblin army. That's one of the many ongoing things we've chosen to take care of.
Glad to see there are so many here both playing and running OD&D.

Here's the Dragonsfoot campaign journal we kept through about the first 15 sessions, if you're interested. It's at ENWorld too, but same thing in both places.

I first gamed at age 12 ( I am 43 now ) and never looked back got thru all the 80's anti game hype thanks to my mom's good judgement and my dad's large arms . I have played all editions of D & d but still love the original rules best .

Welcome to the OD&D, OGG. You and I started at about the same time it sounds like. Pass the d20 and the geritol!

My name is Scott, and I've posted occasionally on various old-school forums for some time. I started playing with Moldvay/Cook B/X around 1981, and I played and ran every edition up through 3.0. My systems of choice for D&D were generally B/X and "core" AD&D 1e.
Over the last year or so, I've become more interested in OD&D. I've never played or run an OD&D campaign, but as I age, most of the things I once saw as bugs, I now see as design features. I'm enchanted with all the blank space spread out before me.
I've run several fairly successful "old school" play-by-posts, and am now preparing to run an OD&D campaign using the Three Little Books and bits of the Moldvay Basic combat system to plug gaps.
I'm starting work from scratch on a homebrew setting, adapting the Avalon Hill "Outdoor Survival" map as the initial campaign setting, by the guidelines in OD&D Volume 3. I'm already enjoying some of the neat synchronicities of random generation, such as three red dragons lairing in the same hex as an Evil High Priest, his militant followers, and his 19 sacred white apes. That's a locus of Chaotic power for you.
The first Underworld region will be the Paul Jaquays/Judges' Guild classic "Caverns of Thracia," the backstory of which will influence my development of the initial setting. "Tegel Manor" is also available as an adventure locale. I have access to a lot of other old Judges' Guild material, but will probably stick to those two modules as I work on my own sprawling Underworld-as-wilderness for eventual use.
I'm not putting much detail into the greater campaign world at this point. The adapted Outdoor Survival map will cover the "Marches" region outlying a "Great Kingdom," but I'll only develop further as needed during play, or as the whim strikes me.
I'm not optimistic about my chances of ever getting to use this campaign for tabletop play, but I have fun with PBP, and several of my regular online players are set to give it a go.
I'm looking forward to participating in, and learning from, what seems to be a very pleasant forum.

Welcome, Scott!
(Is there still a game store on the south side of Charleston, just off I-64? I forget the name; they had games and CCGs upstairs and pet stuff downstairs, if I recall correctly. But it's been years since I have been there.)

I wish. There isn't a dedicated game store or centralized gaming scene in Charleston that I know of. Kanawha City has a comic shop and a mall hobby shop, but that's about it. I've met some nice RPGers here, but our interests lie in different areas.
