Wow, two Paladins in 42 years, do you have any idea of how many characters rolled up? There is a 1/72 chance that a character will have a 17 or 18 charisma. Of course perhaps not everyone who rolled a 17 or 18 charisma chose to play a paladin.
I've had at least two paladins in the past 10 years since I started running OD&D, and that IS with 3d6 in order (though we have thrown out a FEW really bad characters (like no stat above 10)), and that isn't with all that much play (one was in my PbP campaign here, one in a face-to-face game that lasted 3 or 4 sessions). That face-to-face campaign also started with one paladin available as a henchman (I rolled 20 or 30 NPCs as potential henchmen, one of them was a paladin).
The high stat entry was more of an issue in AD&D, especially as there became more emphasis on arranging stats to please.

Two? Was the other one recent? I remember you saying you'd only ever had one. Way back in 1979 or 1980 a woman in my game rolled a Paladin. I think I'd forgotten that. About 2008 somebody rolled a Paladin also. Did they both die within hours of entry to the dungeon? That's what happened to the guy who rolled 18-00 in my AD&D game

That's equivalent to a 1 in 54 chance. You'd therefore expect to see two 17-18s for every 108 charisma rolls.

2 in 108 is 1 in 54, not 1 in 72.

2 in 108 is 1 in 54, not 1 in 72. Oops, I did my quick math wrong... I did 2 chances out of 216 for 17 instead of 3... That's what I get for doing it in my head and not scratching it all out... Frank
