Day 19, turn 36, rds. 4-7 for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
As only Jallon held back, it was five against two with the living having the advantage over the undead. Daphne smashed her foe to the ground and tore out its entrails with her sword. Gratien and Alvis damaged the zombies they fought -- badly in Alvis' case -- but those zombies still stood and kept fighting (Alvis was on the same one as Ramon).
In return, Gratien took a clubbing blow that left him still just lightly injured.
Daphne, on a roll, came over and smote down Gratien's foe. Gratien switched foes and damaged Koldo's zombie. Koldo stepped back for a breather.
Ramon and Alvis could not manage damaging-enough hits against their unliving foe.
The remaining two zombies focused their mace swings on Gratien and Ramon, but missed Gratien and Ramon was protected by his enchanted shield.
Daphne's roll wasn't over yet -- she came over, aided Ramon and Alvis, and smote their foe down. Gratien smote down the remaining zombie.
The battle was won.
"The troll -- is it finished?" Gratien asked.
"I burnt it and left the torch lying in its remains," Alvis said, pointing to the smoldering corpse.
"Burn it more -- you can never be too careful with a troll," Daphne said.
Ramon was burning his last healing spell to help Daphne. At the same time, Gratien came over and used his lay on hands ability on her.
"There, beloved," Gratien said. "I could not stand to see you in pain another moment."
Daphne glanced Ramon's way. To see if his feelings were hurt? To tell him with her eyes that she felt for both men? At least Daphne's wounds were almost all gone now.
From the southeast, they could hear the roar of the Dracolisk.
"They're fighting it," Jallon said. "Sacrificing themselves. I heard Nidia rallying Trazen and Quinton to her before heading to face it, and avenge those who died at the Bailey..."

Day 19, the rest of turn 36/turn 37 for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
The roars of the Dracolisk kept going on and on.
"They must really be giving it a good fight..." Gratien said. He seemed to be chomping at the bit to go join the fight and only Daphne was holding him back.
Koldo and Alvis searched the side rooms to the north. It took five minutes, by the end of which there was nothing but silence coming from the Dracolisk.
"The side rooms stick of death," Koldo reported/complained. "There are filthy rags and old dried offal in the rooms, but nothing else.
Meanwhile, Jallon had been taking stock of this room's inventory, checking the two large casks and four barrels that had been tipped over during the fighting, but not damaged. "The casks hold wine. The barrels hold foodstuffs in brine. And then there's the gong the troll rang."
Koldo and Alvis then took the initiative and listened to the untried doors. "We hear nothing," they reported.
((Ramon would not have waited 5 minutes. All I wanted to know was if there were exits from those rooms. Once they opened those doors and we saw no obvious exits, Ramon would have then tried the other two unused doors, starting with the north-south facing one. Then he'd get everyone ready for a fight before going through the east-west door if it was the only option.))

During those five minutes, Ramon found the south-facing door stuck, but got it open himself. It opened onto a short corridor leading further south. He was eager to press on, but his remaining troops were difficult to muster. Their morale shaken by the vicious losses at the gaze of the Dracolisk, they seemed to keep themselves busy with mundane searching in order to avoid the reality of their situation.
Finally, though, Ramon was able to muster them and get them to fall back into ranks. They must press on, so they did, heading south. Ahead was a door at the end of the hallway...

Day 19, turn 37b for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
The front rank of Gratien and Daphne reached the south door 30' south of the troll room, while everyone else lined up in the narrow corridor. The south door opened -- onto a short east-west passage. To the east (left), it went 15' and dead-ended. To the west (right), it went 10' and turned a corner to the south.
The six adventurers fanned out into the hallway, some wanting to check the east wall for secret doors, and others checking around the corner to the south. Indeed, Gratien reported that the south passage continued 20' feet to a door -- and he could sense evil emanating from behind it.
"Alright." Ramon took a deep breath. He spoke quickly and quietly, with an urgency in the loud whisper he used. It carried just over the tense breathing of the heroes gathered with him. "We have suffered great losses to get here. If this is it and we do not succeed, it has been my deepest honor to know each of you."
His eyes met each of the others and lingered, perhaps, on Daphne's for a moment longer. Ramon had no regrets.
"Brother Alvis, do you have any blessings that might aid us in this fight? Even if you do not, I suggest you ready yourself to call upon Pholtus - the cult leader may have tortured souls serving him in some mockery of life."
Everyone prepared themselves. Ramon gave a half smile, "Daphne, Gratien - at your pleasure."

Day 19, turn 38, rd. 1 for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
"I have a prayer that will grant us light," Alvis said. "I pray that will be enough."
The door burst open on a roughly carved room that was still half cavern, roughly 40' on a side with a 20' high ceiling. Torches burnt all around the perimeter of the cave from sconces, illuminating the scene of -- Joaquim and Marcel chained to the sides of an altar block!
The altar block sat on a roughly-carved dais with half-finished steps running down to the cavern floor from it, and the dais itself took up nearly half the room. The only finished wall in the room was the back wall, which had a huge, elaborate bas-relief carving of a flaming eye with spiders crawling on it.
Standing on the dais was a man in plate armor, with a shield and full helm. Around him were four other men, wearing leather armor, studded leather, ringmail, and chainmail. The last two stood poised in front of Joaquim and Marcel with maces held up.
Between the dais and the door were a dozen skeletons, all with shields and short swords, and six large spiders mixed in their ranks. They all stood their ground.
"Our guests have finally arrived!" the man in full plate boomed through his helm. "I believe the lives of these two men mean something to you. I suggest you surrender so you do not have to watch them die."
Ramon always tried to be good with words but he knew he wasn't really very good with words. So instead he called on his faith to do the talking. He had one powerful blessing left from his gods and he called upon it to save his friends. He called to Hierroneous: "Stay the hands of those wicked men and save your brave servants!"
((Hold Person on the ringmail and chainmail mace-wielders.))

Day 19, turn 38, rd. 1 for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
Ramon got a fast start off on his spell, so he managed to hold the ringmail-clad foe in place before anything else happened.
Alvis attempted to turn the undead standing in front of them. "Pholtus' light, blast you back to your eternal rest!" His holy symbol began to glow, but the evil before them was too potent and the light of his holy symbol sputtered and shrunk away.
The Master was still invoking some powerful spell, calling on both Iuz and Lolth, when Jallon loosed a lightning bolt at him. The lightning bolt tore through three skeletons, a large spider, the ringmail- and chainmail- clad priests, the Master -- and, unfortunately, Joaquim and Marcel as well. Then the bolt bounced off the back wall and hit them again. The skeletons and spider never survived the first pass. The ring-mail clad priest was dead from the first pass, and the chainmail-clad priest was seriously injured after it bounced back at him. The lightning fried Joaquim and Marcel, roasting them on the spot. But -- just as horrifying -- the Master was left unscathed by it.
"I'm sorry..." Jallon said, though to who he said it was unclear.
Koldo, Gratien, and Daphne charged into the rank of skeletons and spiders, hoping to push through to the Master. Gratien stabbed a spider and killed it. Koldo smashed a skeleton to pieces, but Daphne was held on the defensive by her pressing foes despite the magic glaive she wielded.
Koldo, Gratien, and Daphne had two skeletons and a spider left on each them. Two skeletons and a spider were circling around to flank the back row of Ramon, Alvis, and Jallon.
Koldo took a light blow from a skeleton's sword, but it distracted him enough that the spider was able to leap onto him and knock him over. The spider bit Koldo -- he screamed, and then laid still.
Gratien defended himself -- just barely -- from all comers, while Daphne took a glancing hit from a skeleton.
The Master finished invoking his spell, asking his dark cult deities to slay the living. Jallon dropped to the ground, and laid still.
((rd. 1: saves vs. Ramon's spell: 7, 18; Alvis' turning: 4, Jallon's bolt dmg: 23, priest #3's saves: 15, 5, priest #4's saves: 11, 3, MR checks: 33, 31, Daphne's to hit: 5+1, Gratien's to hit: 10+1- 6+1, Koldo's to hit: 15 - 3 dmg, to hit Koldo: 1, 17 - 3 dmg, 17- 6 dmg, Koldo's save: 1; to hit Gratien: 17, 11, 16, to hit Daphne: 19 - 2 dmg, 16, 2; Jallon's save: 2+2))

Day 19, turn 38, rd. 2 for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
The Master invoked his foul deities again, this time asking Lolth to "descend the silence of the creeping spiders on" his foes. The party was plunged into a zone of silence at the entrance of the room, right after Ramon's "NO!!!"
In macabre silence, the remaining four adventurers battled the skeletons and spiders.
Gratien found he was forced back into the second rank by his pressing foes.
Daphne's magic glaive seriously wounded the spider on her.
Alvis had his mace in hand now and held his ground beside Gratien as their foes pressed in around him.
Ramon stepped up and smote the spider that had dropped Koldo, crushing it dead.
Gratien was brought down to one knee by the weight of the skeletons and spider overbearing him, but his armor kept him safe, for now.
Daphne still had two skeletons on her, which she held back at glaive's length. The spider she had injured hesitated, as if unsure whether to court death at her hands or its masters.
Alvis boldly held two skeletons and a spider at bay.
Ramon kept two skeletons at bay.
The remaining priests by the Master bided their time.
((Gratien's to hit: 1+1, Daphne's to hit: 19+1 - 5+1 dmg, Alvis' to hit: 3, Ramon's to hit: 12+1 - 6+2 dmg, to hit Gratien: 13, 17, 18, to hit Daphne: 5, 14, to hit Alvis: 4, 2, 6, to hit Ramon: 8, 8))

Day 19, turn 38, rd. 3 for Ramon, (Koldo, Alvis, Jallon, Gratien, Daphne):
Ramon broke away from the others, moving to the right of the entrance (NW corner), drawing his two skeletons with him.
The Master seemed to be casting another spell, though no one could hear what it was until Ramon moved out of the zone of silence and heard the end of a invocation for motionlessness. Ramon found himself paralyzed, and could see out of the corner of his eye that Daphne was paralyzed as well.
Alvis and Gratien fought on alone, but were now pressed on all sides and could only defend themselves. Gratien held his opponents back, but Alvis had a spider crawl on him and bite him. And he went down.
Ramon could feel the beating he was taking from the skeletons; the paralysis only numbed some of the pain. But the damage was severe, then critical, and then -- Ramon Orfino, Curate of the Temple of the Heavenly Virtues and Billet of Cuthbert, was no more.
Gratien the Paladin, hero of the Harvester's Heroes and winner of Daphne's heart, was the last man standing against the forces of evil -- but not for long.
Into the fray came the Paladiness Nidia, Lieutenant Trazen, and Quinton the Magic-User -- they had somehow survived the Dracolisk! Nidia looked to be moderately injured, while Trazen was only lightly injured, and Quinton had avoided harm altogether...
((rd. 3: Ramon's save: 4, Daphne's save: 1+1, Gratien's to hit: 5+1, Alvis' to hit: 8, to hit Gratien: 2, 5, 15, to hit Alvis: 1, 2, 19 - 4 dmg, Alvis' save: 4, Ramon's dmg: 12, resistance roll for dispel magic: 73, 39))
