As they walked, Eder chatted with Sergi in his native tongue. "Your accent is a bit thick, but it is no worse than my accent as I learn the common tongue. I doubt most would even notice. It is odd that they would choose crushed rock when paving it would be so much better. They must not have contracted a Dwarf to do the engineering." He suddenly stopped and looked out across the field.
"Is that normal? Human social graces are still a bit strange to me, like at the tavern the other night when I asked a fellow to play Bloody Fingers, I had no idea that humans could turn so pale. HA! It was fascinating, and he was nice enough to buy the next few rounds after declining the game. Nice fellow, but no beard."
Eder scratched absently at his own beard, "They wear the same colors, does that not mean they fight for the same cause?" He stopped himself from calling out to the Viscounts men, he had no desire to speak with any law enforcement again if their actions were misread. Eder nodded in agreement with Sergi.
"Yes, wee go. Wee go home." He attempted to sound pleasant and gave them what he hoped was a warm smile, but he had his shield ready in case they let loose a volley and an ax was always near at hand. He edged closer to Sergi and conferred with him quietly, "Now do you see why we dwarves always go fully armed and armored? It just seems prudent. We should hurry back to that Captain though, or else we might miss out on the fight.", his smile was broad, genuine, and enthusiastic.

Turn 42 for Sergi, Eder:
The two adventurers bravely backed away from the crossbowmen. Luckily, the crossbowmen were not interested in shooting them; they were hollering at the soldiers, things like "This isn't your grazing land!" and "Keep your government hands off his cows!"
They made their way back through Ryemend, passing shops that were already closed for the day and taverns that were full of noise, until they returned to the garrison.
They were met at the gate by a sergeant they did not recognize, though he seemed to recognize them. "What are you two doing back? Are you gluttons for punishment? The lieutenant is still seething about you both."
Eder looked up at the sergeant oddly, "No, wee ore not gluttons. He is a Seer-ghay and I am a Eh-dar." He then looked over at Sergi and shrugged his shoulders. "But if the lieutenant is still seething in the morning he should get some balm."
He then half turned and pointed down the road, "As wee war leaf-ing for the city wee saw some of your other soldiers bay-ing faced down by some men with crossbows. They looked like they needed help." He stated this simply, expecting what every soldier would do in such a situation and waited to accompany them as they charged in to save their comrades in arms.
Sergi responds, "Sergeant outside there in a field is now full of cows and there is a stand-off between crossbowmen and soldiers wearing the Viscount's colors. The crossbowman all bear demonic tattoos which is the cult of the flaming eye. The situation is going to be a little messy and by the way tempers are flaring there is bound to be bloodshed. We were told by the captain to report what we discovered instead of intervening."

Turn 43 for Sergi, Eder:
The sentries listened to Sergi and Eder's impassioned pleas and passed the word inside, without inviting the two adventurers back into the garrison (given what happened earlier, perhaps they were glad to stay outside!).
About five minutes later, word came back to the gate and the sentry sergeant shook his head. "Sorry, but they don't believe you in there. First cultists are burning down orphanages, and now they're fighting over cows? It...just doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?"
Sergi replies, "thank you for letting your superiors know about this." Sergi leaves and walking away from the garrison he speaks in his new dwarven tongue to Eder,"apparently the captain is either not really in charge or spared us just to make an example out of the lieutenant poor behavior. Lets see if we can observe the situation with the cows or maybe aid in the case of an attack. Right now I am about ready to investigate this matter away from the town and see if the cultists have a base in the surrounding area."
Given some knowledge Sergi thinks of a way to go back to the scene with the guards and cows and see if there is another approach or direction they can approach without being seen or where there is cover.

Turn 44 for Sergi, Eder:
Their stomachs were gurgling, but they were too excited to think about eating as they made their way back south to the road and open field that connected town and city.
There were just as many cattle as before (about 50), and cowhands (about 6 unarmed and unarmored people), but there were now seven crossbowmen defending them (mostly unarmored, though two wore leather armor).
There were nine soldiers present, two in leather and seven in chain. Two were armed with longbows, two with broadswords (and using shields), two with maces (and using shields), and three held glaive-guisarmes.
Sergi and Eder were 100' directly north of what appeared to still be a tense standoff.

Turn 44 response for Sergi:
Sergi studies the battlefield and tries to get a look at the cattle-hands and see how many have the demonic tattoos. While studying he looks for places for cover. He quietly speaks to Eder, still practicing his dwarven, "looks like we have a huge standoff. If the common people are being persuaded by the cult this will create a huge problem for the government. If the cult has infected its beliefs in the farmers, could they have infiltrated my people?"
Eder drew one of his hand axes and grinned, "Then we should dissuade them from listening to the cult and to their government. They might see an easy path to power or riches with those evil fools, but are blind to the many pitfalls along that way. We should be some of those pitfalls. Ha!" He readied his shield and called out to the farmhands.
"You, hue-mans! Stained down to the Viscounts men!" He began to trudge slowly forward with his shield up. "You face nine soldiers, and you face Eh-dar and Sir-guy. We are he-rows! Go home, go home to year wives and year families."

Turn 44b response for Sergi, Eder:
"Come make me, you ugly, bearded midget!" one of the cowhands shouted back, before turning around, bending over, dropping his drawers, and flashing his hairy white behind at Sergi and Eder. All his friends laughed as the cowhand shook his butt from side to side.

Turn 44b response for Sergi:
Sergi draws his bow and tries to find some cover. Then if the viscount men attack or the cultists attack, Sergi will fire on the cultists. As he is moving he speaks, speaks to eder, "Eder remember if we do this combat target the cultists first. Also remind the Viscount men we are here to help. If we finish off the cultists, the non-cultists farmers should flee."
Speaking to the Viscount men, "Soldiers we are here to help you with this conflict. Some of these farmers are members of the Cult of the Flaming Eye and those members set the fire last night at the orphanage, killing a child and injuring several others. You can tell who are the cultists by the demonic blue tattoos."
Eder cocked an eyebrow, "Who is midget? I, Eh-dar, is no midget you boney beardliss whelp." He began moving forward slowly with his shield raised. "You farm people, these coo... these cul-tists ore not your friends. They are e-vail, they make pro-miss-es and give no-thing. Do not stand by these tat-toed cowards that sleep with orcs and sheep. Soldiers of the Vis-count, we ore your a-lies."
This will be a good battle, he thought to himself.

Turn 44, round 1 for Sergi, Eder:
Since Sergi was 100' away from the cowhands, and most of them were standing in the midst of the cowherd, Sergi could not see enough of them to tell if they had tattoos. The one wiggling his butt, however, clearly had no tattoos on his posterior.
But it was what Sergi had shouted that caused the biggest stir.
"What are they talking about?" one of the crossbowmen shouted at one of his comrades. "What's this about the orphanage?"
"Pay them no mind, the liars!" said the other.
"I'm in this to shoot at government soldiers, not to join no cult!" shouted another.
"Do you revere Trithereon or some cult? It's a simple question!" shouted another at one of his comrades.
"I grew up in that orphanage..." said another. "If you had anything to do with that, I swear to Trithereon..."
"It wasn't our fault!" shouted another. He pointed to Sergi and Eder. "It's them! They're our leaders!"
Pandemonium broke out at that point, as the standoff broke into a chaotic free-for-all.
One of the mace-wielding soldiers ((#5)) charged at Eder ((and is 70' away)).
One of the cultists ((#2)) fired a crossbow bolt at Sergi, but missed.
One of the glaive-guisarme-wielding soldiers ((#8)) charged at Sergi ((and is 70' away)).
Sergi seeing the Viscount man moving forward says, "soldier we work with Captain Banderas of the Ryemend district to stop these cultists. I really don't want to fight you. Eder try not to wound the soldiers, focus on the cultists. " Sergi then moves back and returns fire at the cultist#2
(standard move away from the cultists, then shoot at cultist#2)

Most of the rest of round 1:
Sergi only had time to say: "soldier we work with Captain Banderas of the Ryemend district to stop these cultists. I really don't want to fight you." Sergi fell back 15' and fired at the cultist who shot at him, hit, and killed the man.
One of the crossbow-wielding soldiers ((#2)) fired at one of the militants aiding the cultists ((#1)), but missed.
One of the militants ((#1)) turned on one of the cultists ((#1)) and fired at point blank range -- and still missed.
One of the sword-wielding soldiers ((#3)) charged at Eder ((70' away)).
The cultist ((#1)) returned fire at the militant who shot at him ((#1)), and also missed.
The other crossbow-wielding soldier ((#2)) fired at the same cultist ((#1)), hit, and seriously wounded him.
The other mace-wielding soldier ((#6)) charged at one of the militants ((#2)), reaching him ((but too late to attack this round)).
The remaining cultist ((#3)) shot at one of the soldiers ((#2)), and missed.
The first of the soldiers with a glaive-guisarme ((#7)) charged a militant ((#3)), struck, but delivered only a light wound.
The last of the militants ((#4)) shot at a soldier ((#1)) and struck a lethal chest wound.
The second sword-wielding soldier ((#4)) charged at Eder ((70' away)).
Another militant ((#2) turned on a cultist ((#2)) in his midst and fired at point blank range, only to miss.
((Sergi's to hit: 11- 6 dmg; soldier #2 vs. militant #1: 4; militant #1 vs. cultist #1: 8; cultist #1 vs. militant #1: 7; soldier #1 vs. cultist #1: 19-3 dmg; cultist #3 vs. soldier #2: 2; soldier #7 vs. militant #3: 18-2 dmg; militant #4 vs. soldier #1: 20- 3 dmg; militant #2 vs. cultist #2: 4))

Round 2, turn 44 intentions for Sergi:
Sergi will fire at cultist 1 . While drawing another arrow he says, "Non-cultists farmers, these cultists are trying to manipulate you to serve their demonic masters. They are responsible for the deaths of one child and injuries to others with their arson attack."

Eder frowned, "Tell the soldiers to try to not wound Eh-dar!" He saw that Sergi was slowly backing away and Eder followed suit, not wanting to leave his ally alone in the middle of a battle. "Come, let us end these fools and bask in the a-door-a-tion of the women when we tell the tale. HA!"
"Are you sure they are truly soldiers and not cool-tists in dis-guys? They seem very angry at us." If they continued to charge, he would throw his first ax at the mace wielding maniac and draw his second.
"That was but a warning, we do nut seek to fight you. We ore your allies.", Eder told the advancing soldiers. "We could have attacked your backs, but we gave warning so you knew we war here." Humans really did seem to be quite dense to Eder, it was no wonder they built walls around their temples and closed them off to the fellow believers. Why Bunin thought that they deserved such study was baffling him.
Sergi replies, "we are not going to fight you but we will defend ourselves if you attack us. We are only trying to assist you in stopping the cult." Sergi slings his bow over his shoulder. He does have his hands at his waist, if the guards charge he will draw his sword.

Turn 44, post-combat for Sergi, Eder:
As Eder and Sergi explained themselves, the two advancing soldiers changed their tune. "Ah, I see!" said one of them. "Sorry for the misunderstanding. So you think some evil agitators were behind this scene? Then, if I can be of any help in tracking them down, I'm your man. Kemen's my name. I figure there's a promotion in this for me if I helped take down an evil cult."
South of them, the winning soldiers had gathered the militants who were still alive and were shooing away the cowhands and their small herd.

Turn 44 post combat response for Sergi:
Sergi says, "no problem Kemen. If there is a cultist alive we can question him and find out where they were recruited and if they have a lair. As I said these cultists were responsible for the fire at the St Cuthbert orphange last night. You can tell they are the cultists by their blue demonic tattoos on their arms. Also Kemen can you send a runner to Captain Bandaras and tell him what has transpired. We originally went back to the Ryemend barracks to see if he can send aid to your men. The guards didn't let us in so we decided to help."
Speaking to Eder, "huzzah my friend. We have three events, last night and twice today and were successful.Lets see what information we can get from this prisoner and also get something for dinner "

Eder mulled it over, "Yes, I sue-pose we should cell-e-brate. We did kill that one cool-tist, or.. he should be dead, never really saw a man live long with his leg almost lobbed off." He said with a shrug as he put away his ax. He turned to the soldier, "No oo-fence taken, Kemen. It is understandable.", he then grinned, "But, is not only pro-mo-shun you can look for-ward to. You will be a he-row! And, the women love the he-rows!" Eder clapped his friend Sergi on his back, "Even if they do not have beards, the women adore he-rows."
He spun around to head towards the city, "Come with us, Kemen. Ale, songs, food, glory, and many buxom lasses await us! HA!" He grinned broadly as he looked back at the other two, "Even more buxomy lasses for us since Sergi here has a girlfriend already."

Sergi and Eder, the rest of Day 2:
There was still a bit of a stand-off after the stand-off, as the soldiers at the scene were a mix of those stationed in Ryemend and Verbobonc and they argued about which of the two would take the prisoners. Verbobonc -- and Kemen, who reported there and not to Captain Bandaras -- won the argument and the militants were taken there.
The short, but brutal combat had left all three men Sergi identified as cultists dead, so there was no one left to question but the three militants who still lived -- who were already shouting their innocence and ignorance that any among them had been cultists.
The prisoners were taken to the Foreign Quarter Watch Station. En route, Kemen told Sergi and Eder that, since the militants claimed to act in the interests of the Church of the Common Patriot, that matters of resolving this would not be simple and handled over his head. Quietly, he confessed that the prisoners might even be released in the morning, with as much pull as the churches had in town.
Sergi returned home to Melania, who was upset that Sergi had ignored her all day and gave him quite a tongue lashing. But equally upset was Bunin, when Eder returned to the Bronze Unicorn Inn. Bunin had stayed in all day, afraid to go out and visit any of the priests he had appointments to see. Bunin made clear in no uncertain terms that, if Eder continued to seek adventure on the side and it kept him out all day, that Bunin would seek out someone else to guard him and relieve Eder of his terms of service.
