Hey Guys, Just checked this out, pretty amazing, these guys have really taken on the Labors of Heracles to produce this movie. While I have a small part in this endeavor, it is really quite breathtaking what they have put together in just this brief 30 second trailer. The number of primary sources, contemporary documents and artifacts, vintage photos and footage, carefully researched recreations, amazingly faithful sets, and extensive location shooting make this a phenomenal, virtual temporal and spatial trip through the history of Dungeons & Dragons. Put together by the production team of Chris Haifley, James Sprattley and Andrew Pascal, they have really taken the first step toward making the world at large aware of the impact of this game on human culture. Anyway don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself... vimeo.com/85059163...and if you are moved by it give them feedback on Facebook and tell everyone you can about it: www.facebook.com/TGKFilmFutures Bright, Paul

Don't be so modest, Paul. Judging by the amount of screen time you have in the trailer alone, I'd say you had more than a "small part".

I like this new style of scoio-documentaries. It reminds me of the Spike Jonze one about Maurice Sendak. Nice aesthetics and nice subject, can't wait to see it in full.

Hey Scott, Don't be so modest, Paul. Judging by the amount of screen time you have in the trailer alone, I'd say you had more than a "small part". Yes, they did use me a bit in the trailer but if you knew the scale of legwork used for this movie you would understand just how much more is going into this film. I mean I'd guess they have about 75 hours of footage for a 100 minute movie! A prime example is that desolate frozen lake shot at the beginning, they could have done it anywhere, but they went to Lake Geneva on one of the most inhospitable days of the year and got the shot. Amazing, personal investment... Futures Bright, Paul

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm trying to identify the people on screen in the trailer. If I am right, I recognize Paul Stormberg, Michael Mornard and Jon Peterson. Who is the last person?

Mike Carr is at 1:06, starting "This was a time of cultural upheaval..." Tim Kask at 1:16, talking about the basement of the old grey house.
The first speaker may be David Ewalt, author of 'Of Dice & Men'? I'm just going by the pic on the dust jacket, so I may be wrong.
I don't recognize the guy at 1:00 who compares D&D to Einstein (!).

Yes that is David Ewalt and the person comparing D&D to what Einstein did for science is Flint Dille. Those are his home snapshots of Gary's home (King Vidor's mansion in Beverly Hills - recently razed) in particular the pool house. I think that is Flint sunning on the lounge chair. Note the D&D Beach Towels on the chairs! Futures Bright, Paul

Hey Harvard, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm trying to identify the people on screen in the trailer. If I am right, I recognize Paul Stormberg, Michael Mornard and Jon Peterson. Who is the last person? The list of folks by appearance: David Ewalt, Jon Petersen, Flint Dille, Paul Stormberg, Mike Carr, and Tim Kask. Although, the number of interviewees is 9-10 times that.

Don't want to come off as negative about this, but the "1972" label in the trailer seems inaccurate. We now know that Arneson's medieval Braunsteins go back to at least 1970, even if the name Blackmoor may not have been used that early.
Of course, this may have something to do with how the trailer has been cut.

I thought "1972" was a reference to the beginning of the Greyhawk/Blackmoor vision of what would become D&D.

Re: March 2015: bummer.
I like the use of the actors madly typing, with one of them (a taller Gygax?) chain-smoking.
I didn't know Gygax had six kids. Wonderful.
The music is exactly right, at least from this perspective. My discovery of D&D exactly coincided with my discovery of Led Zeppelin. And of course there are the many references to Tolkien, etc. in the songs. Ten Years Gone has that wonderful mix of strange beauty and melancholy.
Who would have thought you'd get that much drama--the genius...the fame...the girls (!) (there's a shot of two cute ones)...the betrayals--out of the story of two nerds writing a nerdy game for other nerds? That's not a criticism, rather a a resounding YES to to the Heavens!

The two cute girls are Elise Gygax and a friend.
When I was interviewed a couple of weeks ago, Andrew said they hoped to have a rough cut by this Gen Con if they could.

So, is this primarily a documentary style thing, or is there a decent portion of it done in a dramatization style? I thought it was kind of neat how they have actors portraying Gary and Dave in the trailer. Anyone know if that's the style of the movie itself, or just for the trailer?
I hope they get this (mostly) done in time to preview at Gen Con. I'd love to see it there.

Howdy All,
Update: The Great Kingdom Movie KickStarter has just gone live.
The number of primary sources, contemporary documents and artifacts, vintage photos and footage, carefully researched recreations, amazingly faithful sets, and extensive location shooting make this a phenomenal, virtual temporal and spatial trip through the history of Dungeons & Dragons. Now they just need to raise enough support to do the finishing work.
Put together by the production team of Chris Haifley, James Sprattley and Andrew Pascal, they have really taken the first step toward making the world at large aware of the impact of this game on human culture. Anyway don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself, become a backer, and help get this movie made!
Futures Bright,
Paul
