...but Gerar doesn't land.
after a few brutal curves and steep, bumping drops, he falls from the dark chute into an impossibly vast and terrifying space, like an ant tumbling into a well!
With a wind rushing fiercely about him Gerar flays wildly as he tumbles into space, catching glimpses of a glittering array of tiny lights below him, and around him... and subconsciously realises they must be lamps sprawled all over the uneven walls and floor surface of some gargantuan cavern which he is falling into like a stone!
Gerar thinks quickly. He knows of a certain evocation which would slow the pace of his fall; but he has not learned to cast it. In his spell book is contained a spell that would allow his to walk or crawl on sheer surfaces, but he has neglected to prepare any of his spells, and in any event there is no surface within reach. Desperate, poor Gerar begins chanting what few scraps of ritual he has learned, hoping to conjure some sympathetic demon....

Gerar drops like a stone; death surely comes rushing at him??
But no! Of a sudden there is an impossible resistance all around him. Hard cords press mercilessly into his flesh, and his fall is silently arrested in mid-air. He has entered a great net, some awful spiders web of thick silk!
As his weight fully stretches the netting, something gives, and he is slung sidelong perforce, bundled into a ball like a butterfly in a child's net, and then swung broadly toward the cavern wall, and unceremoniously dumped upon a timber gantry with a breathless thump!
The floor promptly gives way, and netted Gerar tumbles, with further indignity, down a long, curving slide before dashing into a great suspended gong (creating a mind-numbing toll), and landing in a heap at its base.
Needless to say, Gerar is momentarily disoriented...

Head still spinning from his recent near death experience, Gerar tries to come to terms with his new surrounds.
The first thing his eyes fall upon is a 1ft tall imp standing right in front of his face. It prods his nose with a pointed finger, quite painfully enough to shock Gerar back to the hear and now.
"Up, maggot!" it peeps with a wicked grin, "Goblins are comin'"
As the thing quips Gerar takes stock of the surrounds. He is in a broad, low lipped iron bin that has apparently been used to hold earth or ore at some point. Supporting it are a series of timber scaffolds and gantries that seem to hang in a vast blackness. Only a single, narrow bridge totters from the bin back to an opening in a cavern wall, about 40ft away...

Gerar rises to his wobbly legs and crosses the precarious bridge uncertainly. It looks to be a long way down into the dark to either side!
By the time he reaches the opposite side he can hear a great clamour of approaching feet and argumentative voices. Goblins, if he must presume.
At the opposite side there is a narrow ledge running along the cliff-face. Immediately before him a broad and ancient arch way opens, double width, into an interior chamber with several more arches leading into who knows what dark places? It is from this general direction that the goblins seem to be coming.
Glancing quickly left and right, Gerar sees the ledge runs some 80ft or so to the left before curving past another arch. To the right it curves, quite visibly, for some way, passing a number of narrower, less well built openings.
"This way, Maggot," chirps a voice, and Gerar sees the imp peering out of the nearest arch along the ledge to his left. "Hide, quick,", it says, before vanishing inside.
Whom ever approaches will burst into the room imminently!

Not a moment after he hides himself, Gerar hears the goblins squealing and yapping as a gang of them charge across the narrow bridge he navigated only moments before, and flock to the steel drum he fell to.
If it weren't for the imp, Gerar would be at the goblin's mercy!
