It was a short trip back to the main entry cavern and then back up the stairs to the outside world. It was, in fact, afternoon on the same day they had first gone in and everyone was hungry for lunch. They retreated back further from the cave entrance, looking for their guide's campsite. Down the mountainside, then a quarter-mile from the mountain in a neighboring pass, they found the site, but the guides had already left, no doubt carrying away Green Lama. They had left food bags tied into the high branches of a nearby tree and Silver Scorpion leapt up to fetch them.
Mental calendars were checked and the Heroes realized this was the 4th of July. It was just over a year ago that Stinger and the Gentleman had died in Reuter Mansion's hideout, which might explain the quiet melancholy of Buck Crawford. But others had dark moods for other reasons.
"I...I feel the mountain has beaten us," the Sandman said. "We took on too great a task. And I worry about what is going on in the States without us."
"I'm just not into this," Shift said. "We're fighting someone else's fight, you know?"
"I hate to say it, but I feel the same as them," Captain Liberty said.
More was discussed, but by mid-afternoon it was clear -- if the expedition was going to continue, it would only be Dice Morgan, the Mountain Man, and Silver Scorpion doing it.
"Are you kidding me, we came all the way out here for nothing?" Silver Scorpion says to everyone who wants to leave. "This is big, we have the chance to make a real difference for the people of China! Just because they're not Americans doesn't make them any less important!"
"I'm going back in there, by myself if that's the way it's going to go down. I'll die before I quit!"

(OOC) (Hey, folks, I'm Max, a new player that will be running Sandman)
Sandman hesitates, thinks of what Dian would say, and turns back around. "Dice, don't go anywhere just yet. Silver Scorpion is right. We can't run out on these people just because the going got tough. I put this mask on for a reason. If I walk away from something like this today, then I don't deserve to wear the mask tomorrow."
He pauses, rubs his shoulder a bit:
"That said, I am not in tip top condition at the moment."

Dice shakes his head. "There's a difference between taking a risk and throwing our lives away foolishly. We ain't even scratched the surface of this deal yet, an' we're already down ta four outta a group that was once nine. I'll fight anything at any time, but I'm not gonna die as a pawn. Remember those corpses we found? More people who were fed a line by these wizard types. I promised I'd go through with this, but I'm tellin' ya, this whole thing stinks ta high heaven. We go back in, I think we oughtta have at least one legit wand jockey with us ta let us know what's what."
Dice thinks of all of his friends who have drifted into the woodwork. Daoist. Sewer Rat. And now Buck. Maybe they were the smart ones.

"Might I suggest a change in tactics, when appropriate?", asked Sandman. "I have a rather good range on this gas gun, and you are rather reliable with those pistols." "If we encounter foes at a distance once more, what say I try to gas them, and then you shoot them while they are possibly stunned? Then, we can rely on close quarters maneuvers to finish things off?"

The discussion was productive and helped pass the time as the Heroes made their way back to the City of Ya'an... ((Read the Epilogue thread if you haven't already, then watch for a new thread where we'll be continuing!))
