Screen shot from yesterdays vassal play. This is a very fun game on a cool topic with interesting variable length impulse mechanics, stuka dive bombers, rubble etc.

Latest game play was the Tobruk scenario from Blood & Sand boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/29879/blood-sand. This was the 3rd time I think I have played this game, twice this scenario and once the shorter Operation Crusader scenario I have a weakness for N Africa games, and this one hits sort of a sweet spot for me as it is a no CRT bucket of dice game with streamlined rules, deadly combat and interesting supply. The knock on the game is that it has 1 month turns and thus some units with 56 mp. Making the potential for 'gamey' moves possible zipping around the map.

I played Enemy Action: Ardennes from Compass Games. This covers the Battle of the Bulge, with daily turns, and with most units being regiments or brigades. The Allies won an Operational Victory on Dec. 26th--the Germans chewed up a lot of American units, but just couldn't equal the penetrations that occurred historically. A good game, with some very interesting systemic elements.

I played another of our continuing Wednesday Command & Colors: Ancients Battles -- this one a crazy Gauls versus Romans battle that was unwinnable from the Gaul's side (my side). But when you feel like you are going to lose, always lose big -- that is my motto!

There's been lots of action back in the game room over the last few weeks:
Andean Abyss from GMT Games. The civil war in Colombia from the mid-1990s into the early 2000s. A victory for the AUC (right-wing militias and death squads).
Wilderness Empires from Worthington Publications. The French and Indian War. A British victory.
War in the Wind from Compass Games. The America invasion and reconquest of Attu Island in the Aleutians. An American victory.
The Hunters from Consim Press. This is a solitaire game where you command a U-Boat in World War II. The U-45 completed 11 patrols and sank 23 ships for 167,100 tons before being sunk itself by convoy escort forces. In game terms, this was a substantial victory.

Below is pic of last eve's Operation Battleaxe, Wavell vs Rommel 1941 game. Some thoughts: Good, tense game with interesting mechanics, like the variable length impulses, area activation, lot's of different options on your turn, calling in artillery, FLAK/AT units, overruns. It can be a short game, our turn 1 ended quickly due to a die roll, and total playing time for us on the standard 3 turn game was only 90 mins. Probably worth exploring the optional 4 turn game if you want a longer game. Rules stuff: Probably a good idea to download this rules clarification pdf and skim thru or add the blue triangle notated rules www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/105732/operation-battleaxe-advanced-rulesFor the 'advantage use' it should revert to the other player automatically each turn, if not used. (One person can't sit on it all game)

Played 5-player Railways of the World. Very close game, Tom won with 65 points, the other four of us each finished with 64 points. Of course, in hindsight, I made four mistakes in the game, any one of which could have resulted in me winning if I had made the correct decision. That said, Tom won with the original strategy of a Toronto -Detroit - Toledo - Chicago and off to Kansas City route

Played the opening scenario in '65 TACTICAL BATTLES IN VIETNAM. I played the US and got clobbered (but saw pretty much what I did wrong -- will play better). Same system as NIGHT OF MAN but on hexes. Seemed better since it was based on a real conflict. Have to try it a few more times to give it a full review...
(The one reason I am holding off judgement is because the first scenario only involves leg units -- no vehicles and choppers -- so some of the cards drawn were useless, being strictly vehicle/air cards.

Hey Lou! I played the same scenario from '65 last week, and the Americans won pretty handily. So keep trying! I thought Mark Walker did a really good job with this game.

I always suck my first time out with a game -- I just worry about getting the mechanics right. My ability to actually play the game improves rapidly.

Played a two player game of QUARTERMASTER GENERAL. Won as the allies. Don't know if this is a 'real' wargame -- it feels much more like an Axis and Allies type game. Demands more playtime -- each player has his own deck of cards, and learning what the deck of cards does seems to be a big part of the strategy...

Master and Commander from White Dog Games. This is a fairly simple Age of Sail game; the basic rules, optional rules, and three scenarios come to a grand total of 8 pages. I played the three scenarios that were included with the rules (there’s a separate booklet that has a dozen or more scenarios from the American Revolution). The British won two of the scenarios, while the Spanish won the third.
The Lamps Are Going Out from Compass Games. Here we have a strategic game on World War I, including the Near East and (in an insert map) East Africa. The map uses area movement. Units are armies and fleets, turns are quarterly. The Allies won on the last turn of 1918, when the Russians captured, and held, Berlin. No Bolshevik Revolution this time around; the Russians stayed in the fight throughout.
A Distant Plain from GMT Games. I wasn’t planning on playing another COIN game quite so soon after finishing Andean Abyss. But A Distant Plain arrived as a birthday present, so. . .The game covers events in Afghanistan, from 2003 to 2011, roughly. The four factions are: the U.S.-led Coalition, the Afghan Government (recently installed and propped up by the Coalition); the resurgent Taliban; and the Warlords (brigands, narco-trafficers, etc.—they’re only in it for money, like the Syndicate in Cuba Libre and the Cartels in Andean Abyss.) Somewhat to my surprise, the Coalition won during the scoring on the third Propaganda Round.

Master and Commander sounds really interesting. I played a lot of WS&IM, and the RPG Privateers and Gentlemen, as well as reading Jack Aubrey, Bolitho, Ramage, Hornblower, etc

I enjoyed playing Master and Commander, but it is definitely at the low of the complexity scale for Age of Sail games. WS&IM is much more detailed. My "go to" game for this period is GMT's Flying Colors.

Well, I likely will get to cross another game off my bucket list soon as I am supposed to meet up with a guy this Sunday to play Hammer of the Scots.
Not sure if anyone has played it? It looks like it will be fun

I did play www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3685/hammer-scots a few days ago. Very solid game. Many layered difficult decisions. Some nice period related chrome on a largely simple mechanic system. I played a friend's copy of the 3rd ed , I liked the components Ok except for the cards. Lots of cool period related art they could have used and the cards feel sort of cheap. Some better placement or wording of some rules and the set up would also help. But, overall I very much enjoyed it and see why it is so popular.

Five battles from GMT's Great Battles of History series, using the new edition of the Simple Great Battles of History rules. From the Tyrant module: Himera 480 BC (Syracusan victory), Second Himera 409 BC (Carthaginian victory), Akragas 406 BC, Gela 405 BC, and Cabala 377 BC (all Syracusan victories). The Carthaginians definitely need more heavy infantry!
And from a while back: GMT's Operation Dauntless, a detailed company-scale game featuring the British vs. the Germans in late June 1944, fighting to the west of Caen. A brutal slugfest, ending with a German victory.
