Yes I can. basically to make shields more important armor-wise and simulate what is known of medieval combat the author suggested a simple rule where a player may have his character's shield splintered (and become useless) rather than take the damage of a blow. In the case of magical shields the bonus decreases by 1 each time it is "splintered" and once it at +0 AC bonus it works as a normal shield and can be trashed one last time, permanently.
He also suggests using this rule to defend against magical attacks (like say, a bolt of fire or lightning).
Now, on a different note, my PC has died AGAIN, with EXACTLY the same problem only WORSE than before even though it got a brand new, all-singing, all-dancing motherboard. So that means Yorjd going into robot-mode again...(sigh)
Oh yeah, and sorry about the gender confusion with Vanna. I had 25 days of mail, blogs and forum backlog to read in the few days my PC was brought back from hades and was rush-posting.
Seems like a good addition to the fighting defensively mechanic. If you're fighting defensively you're saying, it's ok to splinter my shield. Then you could have the full damage avoidance for shield splinter, otherwise it works as normal, no splinter possible while fighting normally.
Otherwise, IMO, it makes shields too powerful; especially if the player gets to see damage and then decide to interfere or not.
I will be away Monday December 15th through Tuesday December 23rd. Please NPC Flandil as necessary, thanks! Being unarmoured (and now out of spells), he is very cautious and will not take the front line.
I will be away from my computer for this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Jan30-Feb1). Please NPC Flandil as necessary. My vote is that for the moment we leave the NPCs to guard the tower while we explore the "goblin dungeon" building.
Just wanted to let folks know that I have finally saved enough £££ to buy a laptop so I'm back in business.
These past few months of no regular net access have been hell! Glad its over.
Meanwhile I've started a Pendragon campaign (yeah, I know hardly old school, but it was what I had kicking about after my PC and all my data died). And now I'm trying to update with what has been happening for these last months.
