Here's an idea: Magic is associated with Chaos, Science with Law. In places and times where Chaos prevails, Magic rules. Science is dominant in Lawful times and places. On the borders and in times of conflict, both co-exist. And of course, there can be Lawful Magic-users, and Chaotic Scientists. This makes my brain hurt -- but in a good way! Have an exalt.

THAT would make an interesting D&D setting.
