For a very long while I have been thinking it would be an interesting project to annotate each and every change that appeared in each printing of the 3LBBs.
An ambitious project, to be sure... but a couple of months back, I decided to make a start with what I had on hand. So, I laboriously went through my 6th print of Men & Magic making my notes, and discovered that an unexpected side effect of my undertaking was the creation of a rather detailed errata.
This "side effect" seemed simply too useful to file and forget, so for those who might be interested in such nuances, here are my findings to date...
New Words
The following words/phrases are additions to the vocabulary, and are assumed to be correct throughout; <<wargame>>, <<wargames>>, <<wargaming>>, <<wargamer>>, <<wargamers>>, <<wolvesbane>>, <<polymorph>>, <<polymorphed>>, <<massmorph>>, <<infravision>>, <<geas>>, <<feeblemind>>, <<cloudkill>>.
Typography
Typographical errors -- especially those to do with inaccurate use of underlines -- have been largely ignored for now.
Capitalisation
Capitalisation of game nouns is applied inconsistently throughout.
It is presumed that the following terms should be consistently capitalised;
+ Character class names,
+ Character level titles,
+ Character race names,
+ Monster race names,
+ Spell names.
Character level titles are also inconsistently quoted throughout the latter parts of the text. These spurious quotation marks are presumed to be erroneous where they do occur.
More general terms such as the words <<monster>> and <<undead>> are occasionally capitalised, but these are treated as individual errors where they occur.
Interestingly, the term <<Gold Pieces>> is consistently capitalised throughout, except where it is abbreviated as <<G.P.>>.
Other Curiosities
There is much said about "evil". Magic spells will detect evil, protect against evil, dispel evil and so on. There is mention of evil high priests, evil attacks, evil sorceries and so on, but nowhere is any character or monster classified as evil. Should <<chaotic>> simply be <<evil>>, and <<lawful>> simply be <<good>>?
Page 8; Regarding Elves
<<Thus, they gain the benefits of both classes and may use
both weaponry and spells. They may use magic armor and still act as Magic-Users.>>
This implies that an Elf is simultaneously both a Fighter and a Magic-User.
Page 10; Regarding strength;
<<Strength will also aid in opening traps and so on.>>
Page 11; Regarding dexterity;
<<Dexterity applies to both manual speed and conjuration>>
Page 21; Regarding spell names;
Should <<Fire Ball>> be <<Fireball>>?
Should <<Pass Wall>> be <<Passwall>>?
Page 23; Regarding the Protection from Evil spell;
<<taking a -1 from hit dice>> makes this a very powerful offensive spell.
Page 23; Regarding the Sleep spell;
<<The spell always affects up to the number of creatures determined by the dice.>> Presumably including friends.
Page 25; Regarding the Dispel Magic spell;
<<Unless countered>> What does this mean?
<<Duration: 1 turn.>> Seeming to imply that Dispel Magic has a temporary effect.
Page 33; Regarding the Raise Dead spell;
<<works with men, elves and dwarves>> but not Halflings?
