The crew and their passengers are gathered together on the deck of the S.S. Arb Century, docked at the port of Drabat island.
"Welcome, pilgrims" says the tall captain "aboard the Arb Century. Soon we will be setting sail for the Holy Island. This will be the third such voyage that this ship has made in her lifetime. Along the way, we will be stopping at various islands to tour their holy sites. The ship will be making stops at Otiv, Gallowrock, Orange Island, Eladredual, and Pennyroyal Island.
First, I'd like to introduce everyone. I'm Captain Conrad. The gentleman to my right is the first mate Geb. The gentleman to my left is our Worminger Greenfriend. These two halfling gentlemen are the brothers Coop. Red Coop is our Steward and Black Coop is our our Chef. The three men carrying barrels over there are Stone Stan, Paper Pete, and Scissors Sam, and the man supervising them is our new Boatswain Erasmus Quayle.
Crewmen! I'd like to introduce you to our pilgrims. Nik Horstman. He's offered to lend a hand aboard the ship. Professor Bartock, and his pet gnoll, Abominable. Fear not. The creature appears to be tame. Bim Erlo, a man of the cloth. Finally, master Dylan. It is a privilege to have one of the fair folk aboard our ship.
Now, we are just about to pull up anchor and set off. Before we go, let us join hands and pray for a safe voyage. Mister Bim, would you do us the honor of leading us in prayer?"
Bim nods and joins his hands to those next to him. Eyes closed and head tilted toward the deck he intones sonorously:
"O beloved Saint Francis, gentle and poor, your obedience to Adam and your simple, deep love for all creatures led you to the heights of heavenly perfection and turned many hearts to follow the path you chose. Now, in our day, pray also for us, in our quest to the Holy Island. O blessed Saint, from your throne among the hosts of heaven present our petitions before our creator. May your prayers on our behalf be heard and may Adam grant us the grace to lead good and faithful lives. Amen."
Erasmus savours the moments of contemplation, almost spoilt by the sweaty odour of Scissors, Paper and Stone, hands held in prayer beside him. Then his thoughts drift back the journey ahead. He opens his eyes and glances at Geb, waiting for the nod so he and the three sailors can withdraw to their duties.

"Amen." repeats the captain "Thank you Bim. Now, let us pull up anchor and set off. We should be in Otiv by tomorrow evening."
Geb nods at Erasmus.
A congegation of celebrants from a local Drabat temple stands on the docks to wave goodbyes and good wishes to the pilgrims on the boat. Abominable climbs up the rigging to wave back. He sees some seagulls on the mast and decides to play with them. The professor shouts at the creature to come down from there, but the playful gnoll does not heed.

The gnoll looks a little sad, but it does what it is told and climbs down.
"Thank you sir. I'm very sorry about that." the professor says "Come Abominable. Let us retire to our quarters. Tomorrow we will arrive at Otiv. I'll take you to see the menagerie, and then we can go to the park, and then you can play there." Abominable cackles happily.
As the Arb Century gets under way Nik proceeds to the leeward rail where he latches on to the rail with an iron grip. Fixing the horizon with his eye, he does his level best not to "cast his accounts" on the waves...
Dieter the Deathless, anger-fueled fighting machine.
Erasmus smiles at the Gnoll saying: "Aye, I've heard Otiv's a place of wonders lad, I'll pray for clear skies for the morrow."
Then nods his head: "Later, gentlemen", turns on his heels and catches the eye of Stone Stan, who is yawning and scratching his gut. Erasmus points at him and wags his finger, causing Stan to scuttle away. The Boatswain sighs.
And we're not even clear of the docks

"Thank you kindly, sir." the lady says with a smile.
"I'm glad you could join us" the captain says to her "We almost left you behind. I'm sure your fiance in Eladredual would not appreciate that." "Oh, sorry" the lady says, blushing "My... carriage driver... hit a pot hole and the wheel broke, and..." "It's no problem" the captain says "Here, I'll show you to your quarters. Men! Pull up the anchor! Raise the sails! Bait the worms! Let us depart!"
As the crew of the Arb Century sets her in motion, Bim makes sure his person and belongings are well out of anyone's way. Looking out at the blue horizon with arms crossed he twirls the wooden cross hanging about his neck with one hand.

After supping on a dinner of smoked fish and lentils with oranges for desert, the pilgrims and most of the crew retire to their cabins for the night. Stone Stan, Paper Pete, and Scissors Sam are on the deck drinking rum and playing cards. The Worminger Greefriend is tending his sea worms down below. Wormingers never sleep.
What are you guys doing? Are you sleeping or reading in your cabins? Do you join the three crewmen on deck for some drinks and a game of cards? Do you go down below and talk to Greenfriend? Otherwise, what are you doing?

"Tis' a divine vocation, working with sea worms" Greenfriend says to Bim as he cleans some green muck out of a worm's gills. "These fine animals are native to the astral sea. They were brought to our world from beyond the holy island and given to man as a gift from the gods. The worms bless us with their prescient sense of smell. They always know when a storm is brewin'. They always know when sea devils are on the prowl." Greenfriend scrapes strange ichor from his beasts and examines it with a grim expression on his face. "This is a bad omen."
On the deck, Stone, Paper, and Scissors pause from their game and their laughter at the sight of a strange fog that has appeared suddenly.

You hear the captain burst from his cabin roused and angry at the commotion. You see a pale light penetrate the fog on the port side, and the shape of a sea vessel begins to take shape. "Men! Light some signals. Light the lantern of pilgrimage! Greenfriend! Prepare the expedient bate for the worms! If these are pirates, they won't dare attack a ship en route to the holy island. Let's be ready to escape in case they do though."

Bim nods and prepares his worms for quick movement. He opens a canister of pungent bait that immediately piques the attention of all the worms.
As the other ship draws near, you are able to hear shouting between men, but the words are indistinct from where you are. You can see that the strange light is coming from a flag on the mast, but you can't quite make out the design.
You hear a loud bang from the other ship. Seconds later, something lands and bounces softly onto the deck of your ship.

Nik sees it. It's right next to his foot. It's a human skull.
Upon seeing the skull, the captain gives an order and the worms start pulling the ship at top speed. The other ship gives chase. With a series of loud bangs, more skulls are launched. Most of them miss the ship and hit the water, but three land on deck.
