Apart a few mistakes, this is an hexographer version of the original Outdoor survival map, with - as stated in od&d - cities and catsles instaed of ponds and animals. So, the most old-school setting you can find. I will make a few proposal on its use for od&d soon - but I'm sure you got allready some weird ideas.

Cool. What you really need are the roads in the forests and the swaps.

I believe that program lists crossed swords as "battlefields", but I could be mis-remembering that factoid.

I believe that program lists crossed swords as "battlefields", but I could be mis-remembering that factoid. I haven't used Hexographer, but it uses the very same symbols as HexMapper and yes, the crossed swords symbol does indeed stand for a location of a battle. Oh, and good job on the map snorri. I should drag down my copy of Outdoor Survival from my folks' attic (it's been there since soon after a friend gave it to me when we were 12 or 13...so...about 22 years. Yikes. It was in perfect condition back then... Imagine my surprise years later, a few years ago, when I learned of it's place in D&D history.)

I figured I might as well have a go with my own hexGIMP script (click the map to enlarge): In doing so I discovered that my battle site icon sucked (will have to fix it for the next release!), and I thought the distribution of cities was too dense, so I didn't bother with more than the terrain. Also I didn't have a key, so I went with grassland where the above went with desert, and deciduous trees instead of evergreens, etc. If you find this sort of thing interesting you might want to check out my random hex map generator. It's compatible with hexGIMP, so you can add cities and rivers and roads and whatnot to the generated terrain (note that generated maps look a lot better at higher resolutions; low resolution is useful for quickly scanning lots of maps, and a promising one can be re-rendered with the last seed). There are some much better examples of maps made with hexGIMP here. Well, that was a fun way to kill an hour

All of these maps are pretty neat. I have fond memories of running OD&D games on the Outdoor Survival map. :-)

Well, on the map, cabans have been turn to towns, and ponds to castle, as suggested in od&d. The crosswords were placed where are the animals, because I had no better symbol available. It could be used for a special monster lair or humanoid tribe.

The same, but I added the cultures from supp. IV gods, demi-gods & heroes. I can switch some places if you got suggestions, for sure. It makes a pretty funny map for an od&d campaign.

Nice work, fellows. That hexGimp program looks pretty neat, and user friendly as well.

And you know, if you alter the scale somewhat to make every hex = 50 miles, it's a good sized campaign world.

That map is excellent! It's never occurred to me to key in religious pantheons. Especially cool since I'm currently using only gods from that particular supplement...

Lovely map. I have been looking for the OS map for some time. Consider it snagged.

Very nice! I'd like to use this (these) programs for mapping out a world for use in my Star Frontiers game, but then I'd have to get my printer up & running again. LOL.

Lovely map. I have been looking for the OS map for some time. Consider it snagged. I've owned a copy of OS for decades, but only use the map. For you, this is a win-win in that you don't have to find the map and you don't have to store the game. One of these days I'll probably just pitch the rest of the box. I've never played the actual game, yet there it sits on my shelf...

It was a lot of fun showing OS to my AD&D group yesterday - they got to see how wilderness hex adventures all started.

That's too bad, Mr. Conley. Perhaps I shall save your website before it goes tets up. BTW: I give all the maps (and links to maps) here an A+. Very nice, and apart from my previous post, I've now switched to Oe D&D, and am looking for some wilderness mapping ideas. Many good ones here to derive from. ;D

Might somebody be willing to send me a Hexographer file of the Outdoor Survival map so I can modify it for my own purposes?
Thanks.

Cool, just found this thread and the awesome map. Is it possible to get a higher res copy of the hexographer map suitable for printing?

Great, I wish I could find a black and white version of the map (like robertsconley's) but using the B/X style icons (like snorri's). Nevertheless, thanks. For anyone who is interested in using the Outdoor Survival map I suggest checking out the OD&D setting blog posts from the Semper Initiativus Unum blog. It compares the OD&D wilderness tables and the OS map to extrapolate a setting. Good stuff. Here is a link to the compiled PDF: initiativeone.blogspot.com/2013/05/od-setting-posts-in-pdf.html
