So finally got around to watching this today. I know a lot of us TOS "purists" out there don't particularly care for the "reboot" series of movies, but I like them just fine.
Anyway, I absolutely loved this movie. It was (to me at least) pure gold.
The story had a great ST vibe, it was fast-paced, the chemistry between the characters/cast is really shining now, and the movie was packed full of easter eggs and homages to TOS. I highly recommend it for an evening of shut-the-brain-down entertainment.

I know a lot of us TOS "purists" out there don't particularly care for the "reboot" series of movies And some of us just don't like the absurd, cliche-ridden garbage that comes out of Hollywood today, of which the new Star Trek movies are shining examples. I don't understand why this is always touted as a good thing. I want to be engaged in a story, not constantly taken out of it to point and say "Haw, haw! That's from the old show!" I also don't understand why that is considered desirable, either. I think putting down the intelligence of a movie, or calling it a "romp," is just the reviewer's way of distancing himself from the movie, because deep down he knows it's lacking. "I like this movie, but I don't take it seriously, so you can't criticize me for liking it," he seems to be saying. For me, "shut-the-brain-down entertainment" is the same as "go-to-sleep entertainment." When I see a movie, I want to be engaged by it. I want to care about the characters. I want to invest myself in the plot. I don't want to be thinking, "This is all really stupid, but WOW SPECIAL EFFECTS! drool." Especially because this is Star Trek, which was always supposed to be more intellectually rigorous than some of its contemporary fare. Now, I haven't seen the last two Star Trek movies, so I can't comment directly on their value. I saw the first one—at home—and found it to be unbelievable, one-dimensional, and more interested in style over substance. My wife saw the second one on an airplane trip and hated it for much the same reasons. Reviews of the latter two tell me they haven't changed any of that.

Saw this at the drive-in on a hot Summer night, on a double-bill with the all-girl Ghostbusters. It was a fun evening.
After the dour and stupid joylessness of Star Trek into Darkness (A movie that seemed aimed not at Trekkies but at the people who used to beat up Trekkies) the zippy pulp fun of this was a relief.

I enjoyed Star Trek Beyond more than the previous two movies for two main reasons:
1. This movie is more about an adventure out where no man has gone before and less about relationships and feelings.
2. I like how it occurs right after the 79 episodes of the original series. That is the perfect time-frame for these movies.
I regard Star Trek Beyond as the crew's 80th adventure. It is better than some of the old 79 episodes, and worse than others. (FWIW, I rate "Balance of Terror" as the best and "The Empath" as the worst. I don't know where I'd rate Star Trek Beyond, but certainly below the former and way above the latter.)

"The Empath" as the worst. Yep, "The Empath" is horrid. Everyone wants to swagger their Trek cred and say "Spock's Brain," but SB isn't THAT bad, it just has a silly pretense and some bad acting. I especially can't stomach "The Way to Eden." At least "The Empath" makes sense.

I have long been puzzled by "Spock's Brain" supposedly being the worst. If "The Empath" and "The Way to Eden" have grades of F, I'd give "Spock's Brain" a D or even a D+. I own all 79 episodes of Star Trek, and I still watch "Spock's Brain" every so often. I don't think I've watched "The Empath" since before my daughter was born in 2004.

You know those "book reader club" threads where folks all read a chapter at the same time and then discuss it? We should have a "TOS episode club" thread where we all watch one episode per week in a particular order (production order, airdate order, alphabetical order ) and then we can all comment on what we saw.

We should have a "TOS episode club" thread There's a Deep Space Nine thread like this on the Steve Jackson Games forums.

Good idea. I propose the following specifics: Beginning on Sunday, November 6 we start watching one of the 79 episodes each Sunday. I would prefer production order as given here: www.imdb.com/list/ls058233287/Once we make a decision as to the exact specifics, Fin could make a new thread for the discussion.

The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" didn't do anything for me. I think Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" would have worked better.

I think it would be interesting to start with Forbidden Planet, then “The Cage,” WNMHGB, and Season One in Production Order. Treat “The Menagerie” as a single episode, since we will have already covered “The Cage.” Skip “The Alternative Factor”—there’s no “scientific” reason we have to watch an episode we know in advance is unfun. After the end of Season One we take a hiatus and decide how to proceed.

- I don't find "The Alternative Factor" unfun.
- Bashing the bad episodes is part of the fun.
- "The Empath" is clearly the least fun episode, followed closely by "The Way to Eden."
- "Spock's Brain" is fun.

The Way to Eden is silly now, but as an eleven-year old it blew my mind.

My candidate for the weirdest Star Trek episode is "Assignment: Earth", in which Kirk, Spock, and Scotty pretty much stand around and watch Gary Seven saving the day on TV. They are basically guest stars in their own TV show, while we viewers watch large chunks of the episode in which no Enterprise crewman is anywhere to be seen.
This used to puzzle me mightily until I learned that everyone thought that "Assignment: Earth" was going to be the last Star Trek episode ever, and that Roddenberry was pitching a new TV series called "Assignment: Earth" featuring Gary Seven, Roberta, and Isis the cat. Kirk and Spock even leave us with a product pitch in their last lines before being beamed up and flying off into cancellation.
Of course, history has a third Star Trek season and no Assignment: Earth TV series.

"Assignment: Earth" is an awesome piece of swinging sixties spy-fi POP! and Terri Garr is hotter than a supernova in it.

It would have been cool to see what an Assignment: Earth TV series would have been like.

Thing is, I liked the new movies. It's just that they mostly reminded me of... The "Lethal Weapon" movie series, I am not sure why. And I am not sure whether "Lethal Weapon" and "Star Trek" were really meant to go together. Just saying.
