While Infantryman Ghuru and Nego were availing themselves of Kumahl's hospitality, Huruyan returned from the Temple of Chegarra with another infantryman.
Clan Accountant Grujung accepted the Proof of Services Rendered statuette from Kumahl for the completed contract. He also mentioned that Huntsman Chodo of the Silver Kangal had left a message that Chodo urgently needed to talk to them.
Huruyan: "Accountant Grujung, would you please send a messenger to Huntsman Chodo that we will be here and ready to speak with him whenever he wants."
"Kumahl, we really need to speak with someone about better clothing, what we are wearing doesn't reflect well on the clan when we meet with others.Accountant Grujung, would you be so kind and tell us who we should speak with about clothing?"
Clan Accountant Grujung: "A messenger to Huntsman Chodo. Yes, yes that can be arranged."
"Begging your pardon but, I was meaning to speak to you about your appearance." "It isn't appropriate for someone of your stature to look like they just washed ashore from a shipwreck." "While that may have been true not long ago, it is no longer." "From your recent successes it is clear that you are not just some random flotsam."
"I'm sure Major-Domo Runmaru can make arrangements for you to be more suitably clothed." "I will discuss this with him right away."

Huruyan: "Thank you, that is much appreciated."
Kumahl: Kumahl rejoins Huruyan, as he is speaking with Accountant Grujung. Over his back is slung the broken doorway rods wrapped securely in burlap and tied with a sling.
"Huruyan, are we to wait on Huntsman Chodo? If so, then we should send the Infantrymen back to the Temple, don't you think?"

Huruyan: "Absolutely, they have done their job." Turning to all of the infantrymen that had helped them and guided them Huruyan thanked them and released them to return to the temple.
"Kumahl, you shouldn't be carrying things like that," pointing to the load on Kumahl's back. "It lowers your status and that of the clan. There are plenty of porters and the like for that. I know that we had to do things like that for ourselves back home, but here you must let others do their jobs, leaving us to do ours."
Kumahl: Pointing to his clothing and attire, Kumahl speaks very matter-of-factly "Who could tell what our station should be given the way we are dressed. Physical labor is good for the mind and the body. If that creates concern for you, then I will head back to the Temple of Thumis by myself. Until there is a real change in our status, I see no need to over burden anyone else."

Huruyan: "Far from overburdening others, by allowing them to do their work we justify their jobs. As for our appearance and status, I am working on that! However there is no need to get upset and leave, if nothing else Chodo will soon be here to talk to us."
Kumahl: "Seems the only thing being validated here is slavery, poverty, and squalor. A man can not dream or become what he dreams of being, because his station will not allow it. Being a victim of circumstance is not a privilege."
"I am surprised that things continue to function in this city. The impoverished, destitute, distraught, and discarded, easily outnumber the opposition 10 to 1. Maybe I need a change of vocation."
"It is a heavy weight to bear the death of a friend, I could have lost you to the Chaskeri. More importantly, the deaths of those I didn't know. I mean the porters, did their jobs well, but seriously they risked their lives and for what, to set on the steps of a shrine and watch another man die? Our actions aren't enabling or empowering them, they are entitled. How can we continue to improve society, if that is the mentality we encourage?"

The Infantrymen stood around until Clan Accountant Grujung honored them for their service with a small tip. Clan Accountant Grujung cast a disparaging look towards Huruyan and Kumahl while doing so.
In a small crowd of clan women, Clan Clothier Ninue (Third Wife of Major-Domo Runmaru) arrived with fabric samples and measuring tape. Soon Huruyan and Kumahl were surrounded and their measurements recorded. Many soft fabrics with basic patterns of primary colors were displayed. Most of the fabrics contained shades of green in at least one part of the patterns.
Their old loin clothes of a rough durable fabric in a single faded color looked even more like rags in comparison.

Clan Clothier Ninue: As several women displayed the available cloth samples, "What would you gentlemen prefer?"
Glancing at your dirty feet and fingernails, Clothier Ninue said, "While your clothes are being made, we need to get you cleaned up."
"Do you have any accessories that you prefer?"
Huruyan: "I will leave those things to the expert, you. Though come to think of it, I will need some kind of small pouch for tip change."
Kumahl: "As to color, a simple solid emerald green. The actual design I will draw and describe for you. You are more than talented, you are definitely gifted." as he says this he looks around to the better attired clansmen. "Your work speaks to your gifts."
Taking a piece of parchment from his pack and a charcoal pencil, Kumahl sketches britches and a vest. The britches have reinforced knees and pockets stitched to the front of the thighs and the outer sides of the thighs. The vest is likewise stitched with pockets on the front in two columns with two pockets each.
On the vests top left pocket is the symbol of the Emerald Fisher and on the top right pocket is the symbol of Thumis. "If you need me to purchase the gold and black thread to stitch the emblems, I can pay for it now."

Clan Clothier Ninue: "Thank you for noticing my humble work. I try to do my best for the clan."
"Distinguished Craftsman Kumahl, the clan has no problem supplying the needed materials for your unusual outfit." "Its very uniqueness will further empathize your importance in the clan, as your successes have brought favorable attention to the clan."
"While Huruyan is getting a manicure and pedicure, we will review your special measurements and ensure that the shade of green chosen meets your requirements."
--- Huruyan was led to another platform, The Hall of Preparing for Audience, where he was surrounded by a multitude of servants. They stripped him, washed him, applied scented oil, trimmed his hair then cleaned his toe and finger nails.
As the cleansing and prepping was finishing, some of the people that had accompanied Clan Clothier Ninue entered.
They were carrying a knee length tartan kilt of a light and dark green plaid fabric with thin red and white lines. This they wrapped around him and over it, strapped around his waist, was placed a nice but plain flat chlen hide pouch.
Good quality emblems of clan and faith were sewn on the left side of the kilt with the pouch hanging on the right.
When Kumahl entered The Hall of Preparing for Audience, a distinguished gentleman in a multi-shade green kilt was already there, surrounded by servants of the clan.
When the man turned around, Kumahl was surprised to see that it was his brother, Huruyan.

Kumahl: Kumahl emitted a low whistle, "You clean up well brother."
"I will have to remember Clan Clothier Ninue, next time when I need some sewing and stitching done."
Huruyan: "I do look fine, don't I. Now lets see how well you clean up."
--- After Kumahl set aside his burlap wrapped bundle, the servants got to work stripping and cleaning him. Under their gentle restoration the grime and neglect was sloughed away and the appearance of vigor returned.
Again Clan Clothier Ninue's crew paraded in with their fabric and implements. This time they surrounded Kumahl and began tailoring britches and a vest to meet his requirements.
Even without strenuous activity the outfit was hot and the tailors worked at adding a little ventilation.
From what Huruyan could see through the crowd of craftsmen, the solid emerald green outfit with its emblazoned clan and faith emblems was quite impressive.
Soon enough the work was completed and Kumahl was almost unrecognizable as the man that had entered.

Huruyan: "You clean up remarkably well yourself, Kumahl."
--- After Hururyan and Kumahl had been completely groomed and clothed, a messenger came forward and said that Huntsman Chodo of the Silver Kangal had arrived and was awaiting their availability.
Huruyan could see that Junior Priest Panjang was also waiting for a chance to talk to him about returning the borrowed equipment.
Huruyan: Huruyan walks over to Junior Priest Panjang and gives a polite greeting.

Junior Priest Panjang: "Distinguished Hunter Huruyan, I don't mean to interrupt but I am responsible for the the ancient artifacts that were loaned to you."
"Did they serve you well?"
"Have you finished with their use?"
Huruyan: "We have finished with them, thank you for the loan, they made a real difference." Then Huruyan gives the items back.
Kumahl: Noticing that Panjang had arrived, Kumahl decided to change some of his previous plans.
Walking to where Panjang and Huruyan are, Kumahl addresses Panjang.
"Junior Priest Panjang, it is good to see you again." With that introduction, Kumahl sticks out his hand in an effort to shake Panjang's.

Junior Priest Panjang: With an impassive face, Panjang shakes Kumahl's hand. "It is good to hear that you successfully completed the clan's business with the Temple of Chegarra, sir."
Kumahl: "I have something that could use your scrutiny." Nodding in the direction of the bound rods, "I am looking for a translation of the carvings on those rods. Would you be willing to look them over?"
Junior Priest Panjang: There is a gleam of avarice in Panjang's eyes.
"Yes sir, I would be willing to attempt translation of the carvings." "Where did you get the rods?" "Do you have any idea what they are used for?"
Kumahl: "This was found in the watery lair of a Chaskeri."
Choosing his words carefully, Kumahl makes sure he has Panjang's attention, "This is a Hlys Doorway. This is one end, and I do not know what is on the other side. Assembly of the Doorway is not recommended, but I believe that there should be a way to track the location of its partnered Doorway. If we can make sense of the markings on the rods."
Certain that he has Panjang's attention, "Do not assemble the Doorway."

Junior Priest Panjang: "As you wish sir."
"I will do my best to make this Doorway an asset to our clan and not a threat."
"I'm sure my skill with ancient devices will be of great assistance." "Plus, I can call on the resources of my temple if needed."
Kumahl: "I am certain you will do your best, Junior Priest Panjang. When we have the necessary information to locate the partner Doorway, then we can reassemble this one. If you come upon a means to reassemble the broken rods, please let me know."
Pausing for a moment, "Is there any other information you require from me?"
Junior Priest Panjang: Junior Priest Panjang looked in the burlap.
"If you are sure that these are a complete set then I will begin their study immediately."
He barely waited for a response before summoning a nearby servant to carry them after him.

Huruyan: "Kumahl, I am glad that you seem to have come to some sort of truce with Junior Priest Panjang. Also, Chodo is here and I think we should go and see what he wants, from what little I know it seems important."
Kumahl: "Hopefully Junior Priest Panjang follows my counsel and does what I asked. Assembly that Doorway has unpredictable outcomes."
"I am concerned about our pantheonic conflicts. There could be greater issues than Panjang and myself."
"What really decided the matter was the message from Chodo. I realized that there would not be time to get the Doorway Rods to the Temple of Thumis and me get back here afterwards. So I conceded and gave Panjang what he wanted from the start. Something to play with."

Hururyan and Kumahl meet Huntsman Chodo in an area partitioned off with thin drapes with a wave pattern.
Huntsman Chodo surprised and pleased to see them in their new array. He has not changed that you can tell from when you last met except to be a bit more nervous.
They seat themselves on the available stacked mats and Huntsman Chodo takes a level lower than them.
After the usual pleasantries and refreshments brought by the servants that maintain this area, the reason that Huntsman Chodo is visiting comes up.
Huntsman Chodo: "Previously Huntsman Huruyan, you had expressed an interest in going with me on a hunting expedition."
"I know a place in the Flats of Tsechelnu where I think Kheshchal (the Plumed Bird) can be found." "I was wondering if you would be interested in accompanying me on this hunt."
"I not sure if you know but, a perfect tail feather of a Kheshchal can fetch a hundred gold each, from the right buyer." "With a successful capture, that doesn't damage them, I've heard of hunters collecting up to twenty feathers from just one bird."
"Hopefully Kumahl can join us and think of a way to capture a Kheshchal with the least harm to the feathers."
"I was just leaving for the Flats when I remembered that Huntsman Huruyan might be interested."

Huruyan: "Ah, to go hunting again, that sounds like fun, and if we can bag a Kheshchal, profitable as well. I would love to go, how about you Kumahl? Oh, we also need to bag something edible, I haven't have anything but seafood in a while, not that I don't like seafood you understand, but I like a little variety."
Kumahl: "Hunting would a great change of pace."
"How big are these birds, and what is their natural environment?"
To answer Huruyan's food question, he puts into his friend's hand a hard tack bisquit, "Real man just eat hard tack." After watching Huruyan's face at the joke, Kumahl starts laughing.
Huntsman Chodo: "The Kheshchal lives in the palmettos and scrub of the Flats." "They are the size of large ducks and can slip through the brush very quickly." "When they don't have their tails open and on display, they are difficult to spot."
"Stories say that they are unusually smart for a bird and they are worth twice as much if you can capture one alive."
"While hunting wild pigs I stumbled into an area that was full of them." "Unfortunately, all I had brought were my boar spears and I couldn't catch any."
"I'm sure that I can find my way back there."

Kumahl: "Are these birds known to fly? How big were they? Any difference between a male and female? More value for a mated pair, I would wager."
Kumahl is already considering nets and snares of fine fabric and gentle threads.
Huntsman Chodo: "They can fly short distances but mostly use their speed through the bushes to escape capture." "The males are the ones that have the feathers we want." "Nobody has been able to breed them in captivity."
Kumahl: "Brother Chodo, could we coral the birds? Possibly force them into nets? We would need cages to transport them. How many would we consider capturing?"
Huntsman Chodo: "I would be pleased if we could actually capture more than one so bringing more than a small cage may be too burdensome."
"Corralling a bird sounds like a great idea if they couldn't fly." "We could certainly drive one into a trap at least."
"I am concerned what else we may flush out of the bushes." "There are many dangerous things that exist in the Flats." "If the area was safe and the Kheshchal easy to catch, there would be none left for us."
"There is a good reason Kheshchal feathers are worth so much, besides their beauty."

Kumahl: "What other beasts might we encounter on the Flats Huntsman Chodo?"
Huruyan: Huruyan listens intently, then make some suggestions about folding cages made partially from netting.
Huntsman Chodo: "All manner of creatures both natural and unnatural can be found there." "It is an area that most avoid whenever possible." "That leaves large tracts of it unexplored by all but the brave."
"I've seen many dangerous things there myself that are best avoided like undead tomb guardians and the poisonous purple plants called 'Food of the Ssu'".
"Skilled hunters like ourselves should be able to handle the dangers."

Kumahl: "Collapsible cages. I think we could construct something like that."
Huntsman Chodo: "It will be a full days travel on the sakbe road from Jakalla to where we depart into the Flats." "I had planned to start first thing tomorrow morning, if that gives you enough time to prepare." "I have porters to carry my supplies. You will want to bring your own supplies for a week just in case they are needed."
"Oh, there are bandits in the Flats so, you may want to have more than just your hunting gear."
"Are we agreed then? Before first light tomorrow?"
Huruyan: "I would like to see if we can get some chlen hide armor first, so how about 1 day to prepare? What do you think Kumahl, I can afford chainmail armor, how about you?"
Kumahl: "Chlen hide would be good. I would hope a day would be enough."
Taking the cue from Huruyan, Kumahl draws some parchment from his pocket and a piece of charcoal. The sketches he began drawing were designed for something as large as a bear cub and sturdy enough to hold one as well. Looking at his drawings, Kumahl makes a list of materials: Fine mesh netting (3' x 3') (x 96), Bamboo Rods 2 ft (x 96), and Leather Straps (1/4" wide) (100').
Kumahl sends away for the clan craftsmen and for Clan Clothier Ninue.

Huruyan: "Chodo, do you have any armor and do you plan on using it?"
Huntsman Chodo: "Yes, I have armor and will be bringing it." "You can never be too safe in the Flats." "The natural snakes are bad enough but I hear rumors that an unusual number of Qol (the Serpent-Headed Ones) have been spotted lately." "I have no idea what has stirred them up but I don't want to encounter it either."
"While the Qol use primitive weapons, they also poison them." "I'd rather they hit armor than me."
Huruyan: "Kumahl, do you think that we should ask Ninue for some old clothing for this hunting trip so we don't ruin our new clothes?"
Kumahl: "That and I could use some finely made mesh or very light fabric for the cages."
Kumahl taps the drawings and the parts list scripted there.
--- A servant takes the discussion between Kumahl and Huruyan to be a request and hurries off.
Soon Clan Clothier Ninue and a couple of her helpers enter the chamber.

Clan Clothier Ninue: "You have need of my services again?"
"I can cloth you in more rugged outfits if that is required." "What exactly are you needing?"
Huruyan: "We are planning to go hunting in an area where we may be attacked with poisoned weapons and were looking for something to wear with chlen hide chain mail armor."
Kumahl: "Ma'am, do you also assist with the clan nets? I am looking for several yards worth of fine mesh."
Looking at Huruyan, "And yes we may need some clothing designed for more rugged use."
Huruyan: Speaking to Ninue, "We also need to actually get the chain mail. Would you know who we should talk to to get armor?"

Clan Clothier Ninue: "A fine mesh..." "All I have is only suitable for veils and transparent portions of outfits." "I'm sure it is not strong enough for what you intend."
"Senior Most Fisher Ashqo may have just the thing though. A minnow net." "I will have one brought to you".
"For armor it would be best to meet with Clan Armorer Hehejallu. I'm sure he can find something suitable." "If not, then Major-Domo Runmaru can give you a chop to purchase what you need from the Armory of Bushetra the Smith (52)."
"As for something to wear under the armor, I can provide some light shifts."
With the snap of a finger the shifts and a minnow net were brought.
Kumahl: "I do appreciate the promptness you bring, Clan Clothier Ninue. We will make use of what we have and adapt for those things we do not have."
Huruyan: Spotting a nearby servant, "Go to Armorer Hehejallu and tell him we have need of his services."

Clan Armorer Hehejallu: Arriving with several apprentices Clan Armorer Hehejallu asks, "How may I be of service to you gentlemen?"
He is wearing an apron that has many pockets with the handles of small tools peaking out. Unlike his apprentices' aprons, his is clean where as theirs are heavily stained.
Huruyan: "Thank you for coming so quickly. We are planning a hunting trip into a region where their is significant danger and want some chain mail armor, and we have been told that you can help us."

Clan Armorer Hehejallu: "Chain mail armor huh?" Hehejallu questions. "Yes, we may have some your sizes."
Hehejallu commands, "Measure them" to his apprentices.
--- After the sizing, Hehejallu sends them to the apprentices to the armory to fetch a couple of sets of armor to try on.
The armor is clearly not new and the previous owner may not have survived the wounds they took but the armor has been repaired and looks presentable. It looks like something an experienced warrior would wear and carries the clan's markings.
[Private to Kumahl: Kumahl's skill as a Smith-armorer tells him that the armor has been expertly repaired and is in serviceable shape.]
Kumahl: Looking the armor over, "Expertly repaired, Clan Armorer Hehejallu. I pray that you may never have to repair these pieces of armor again. May your skills be used to create and not repair." Kumahl smiles at Clan Armorer Hehejallu with gratitude for his expert skills.

"If so, I will leave them in your care and return to my business."
Huruyan: "Thank you again, and yes these are acceptable. Well, Chodo it looks like we are ready to start tomorrow after all."
Kumahl: "I need to see the master of the nets and acquire the rods and leather straps."
"The porters will need 4 to 6, six foot long poles to carry the cages back."
Clan Armorer Hehejallu: "Nets and poles are outside of my domain."
"I'm sure if you ask Major-Domo Runmaru politely he will make the necessary arrangements."

Kumahl: Kumahl chuckles and then apologizes to Clan Armorer Hehejallu, "I did not mean to have you address those issues. Thinking out loud can get one in trouble. Again please forgive me."
Huntsman Chodo: With a surprised and bemused look on his face Chodo watches as the men he had saved from slavery took charge of the situation.
"Distinguished Gentlemen, it is a pleasure to me that you have agreed to accompany me, and with such enthusiasm."
"I had better get back to my clanhouse and make sure that my preparations are as efficient as your's."
"Thanks again for your support of this hunting expedition."
Huntsman Chodo rises and departs. You note that he was unaccompanied for this visit.

Huruyan: "We need to speak with Major-Domo Runmaru anyway, Kumahl to arrange for porters and even possibly 1 or 2 spearmen." With that Huruyan sent a servant to politely ask Runmaru if they could speak with him.
--- A servant arrives and lets Huruyan know that Major-Domo Runmaru is available for audience.
The Chamber of Weighty Decisions is stacked with scroll racks, cabinets, barrels and reeking of ink is a disorderly place. Major-Domo Runmaru is on a dais at the center of it with a swarm of apprentices and servants around him.
In between reading, stamping and taking refreshments he pauses long enough for Huruyan to speak to him.

Huruyan: "Thank you for seeing me so quickly, I know how busy you are. Kumahl, Chodo, and I are planning to leave on a hunting trip into a dangerous area tomorrow at first light. We would like to have four porters to carry our gear and a couple of spearmen to assist in the hunt, would that be possible?"
Major-Domo Runmaru: "Well it is short notice ..."
After shuffling some papers and looking expectantly at you he continues.
"Normally I would not approve using clan resources for purely personal use ..." "... but since you have done so much for the clan reputation lately ..." "I'm sure we have a few guardsmen that would like to do something more exciting."
"I will arrange for them to be at your disposal in the morning."
"You, make the arrangements for four guards and four porters," he said to one of his aides.
The aide drew up two scrolls that Runmaru then stamped with an ornate stamp from a nearby table.
"These authorize you to their command," he said as he had a servant pass the scrolls to Huruyan.
Kumahl: Kumahl bows low, "This will help us greatly, Major-Domo. If you will excuse me, I need to visit Senior Most Fisher Ashqo about some nets."
Taking his cue from Major-Domo, that he may leave, Kumahl rises and heads to the section of the boats housing the nets and the returning fishers as the day is drawing to a close.

Senior Most Fisher Ashqo was able to scrounge together enough extra minnow nets to make a small cage suitable for a single bird.
Ashqo assured Kumahl that more could be made or bought but, that would take time.
While meeting with Senior Most Fisher Ashqo the days oyster catch arrived. Master Diver Areli, Diver Falyai and Diver Hirtor all greeted Huruyan and Kumahl happily. They suggested a party to celebrate the rise in status of the brothers.
Kumahl: Getting the one cage is good.
"Senior Most Fisher Ashqo, this will do nicely." Kumahl further inspects the structure, impressed with how quickly the Senior Most Fisher accomplished the construction.
Bowing to the Senior Most Fisher Ashqo, "Well crafted indeed."
Rejoining Huruyan, "I wonder if we could secure a box big enough for the feathers. One bird intact and several dozen feathers should fill the clan coffers pretty well, I would guess."
With the return of the oyster divers, Kumahl could tell the festivities were likely to get under way. Kumahl excused himself for a few minutes to obtain some solitude, meditate and pray. Thirty minutes later he found his brother and the diving party.
Huruyan: "I'm sure a basket large enough would be easy to get, but now I think I should find 4 guards and 4 porters that would like to go with us." With that Huruyan started looking for guards and porters that were willing to go on their hunt.

Huruyan quickly found 4 guards that would rather travel out of town than stand guard around the clan houseboats, again.
It was not clear that they understood the danger inherent in the hunting expedition, just that they were willing to do something different for a change.
Porters would go where ordered, there was no issue with recruiting them as needed when needed.
Huruyan: Huruyan tells the guards and porters that he selected to be ready at first light to travel. This of course means that they must not stay up to late for the party.

The divers they knew and ones they had just met all crowded around and plied Huruyan with food and drinks. They listen attentively as he told them what he and Kumahl had done for the clan to gain the recognition they now had.
While some were jealous, most just saw it as yet another reason to party and did so with gusto. Several offered their assistance if it was ever needed.
Soon they let the partying continue without them as they found a quiet place to share some personal time and sleep. Kumahl and Huruyan had their pick of partners as they headed to bed.
--- All too soon the morning watch changed and the time to get started on a new day began.
As they met in The Chamber of Exquisite Sustenance for morning bowls of Dra-grain porridge, Senior Cook Charikasa asked them how much provisions they were planning to carry and if they were going to purchase them from the clan or a vendor on their travels.
