My gaming group of old (I've been playing with some of these guys as far back as 1981) just finished our second session in Fight On! #2's Darkness Beneath. We're having a blast. Maybe, at some point I'll find the time to write a complete adventure log, or post highlights from Session #1. But, now, I'll give some of the highlights from this past weekend's session. I DMed and we play AD&D
ATTENTION: Spoilers definitely follow:
Original Party Roster for Session #2 (might be helpful for highlights)
Halfling Thief
Half-Orc Fighter/Cleric (RIP)
Half-Orc Fighter (RIP)
Elf Fighter
Half-Orc Assassin
Human Magic-User
Shock Troop Characters for Session #2
Half-Elf Ranger
Human Cleric (RIP)
Human Cleric
*Encounter with the boondawoogle
This thing freaked them out. One of the characters got flamed while on the stairs. Another one got charmed and compelled to settle a score with his least favorite guy in the partly (needless to say, the charmed half-orc and the elf had a real problem on the staircase). Later, that same previouly charmed character returned and charged the boondawoogle. He got flamed (R.I.P.). The rest of the party, however, brought him down. There was a nice haul there for a bunch of first levelers. A very memorable encounter...
*Faceoff with the bugbears and goblins
A newly arrived half-elf ranger (a replacement for the half-orc fighter/cleric) joined the party. The players hit the goblins first and laid waste to them thanks in large part to a well-placed sleep spell. They got a little nicked, but slayed 19/20, including two little buggers they chased behind the barrels of orc’s mead. The half-orc assassin in the party guzzled it (see fight w/ bugbears below).
Meanwhile, the party split up a bit (usually bad news) with the captured 20th goblin to do some spying on the bugbears they learned about from their captive. The partial party was jumped by the bugbears. The party's strongest fighter, the half-orc fighter, and the goblin captive bit the dust (the fighter had already suffered a little flame damage from the boondawoogle). Wisely, the surviving M-U and thief fled to join the rest of the party.
The half-orc assassin, drunk on orc's mead, waited briefly for the bugbears. But, the bugbears slyly dragged the fighter's dead body on to the fountain (under the net) and waited. The half-orc assassin drunk, but powered by the mead, went to take it to the bugbears. He investigated his fallen comrade, but the net dropped and one of the bugbears hiding behind the fountain started chopping at him with the axe. The rest of the party was behind, but encountered the other two bugbears who were sneaking in the room from behind. A shock troop human cleric (a replacement for the half-orc fighter), didn’t survive his first encounter and was killed by the bugbears. But, some well placed missiles by the elf, thief, and even the m-u brought the other bugbears down. The entangled half-orc, beserk on orc’s mead, was released of the net to finish off the final bugbear. The elf fighter, who unwisely partook in the orc’s mead and was injured in battle, hurled and fell unconscious.
*Trap, Plate, & Shield
The elf and half-elf went to the goblins former quarters to recuperate. Meanwhile, the thief, assassin, and m-u did some exploring of the trap. They neutralized the pit (info received from the hostage goblin) and approached the trapped room (more info received from the hostage goblin). Bolstered by the orc’s mead, the assassin, alone, was able to make it past the trap and recover the plate and shield. But, rather than going back he decided to climb up to the ceiling and investigate a small hole there (not sure if this was exactly the same as the adventure). It looked like a possible fit for a halfling, but probably not a man or half-orc. The assassin stripped down and made the climb anyway. After a bit of discussion between DM and player, and some rolls, it was determined the assassin was flat out stuck! His lower body was dangling in the trap room and his upper body was exposed in the cavern above. None of the other characters were willing to risk the trap and they set out on a recovery mission to find the assassin from a another “level”. The party was joined by another cleric (that player’s third character of the session!). He help heal the others and they set out to find the assassin.
*Journey to find the assassin
They ran into several corpses on the way. . They also encountered the ball of fire room – fun. Eventually, they found the assassin before the wandering monsters did. The assassin found the tablet. And the Halfling brought up the assassin’s stuff and the sword from the room below.
*Encounter with the Halflings
Wounded and out of spells the party unwisely kept exploring. The Halfling thief at the back of the party ran into one of Hamly’s gang. This evil Halfling mistook the party’s Halfling for one of the gang. The party’s Halfling told him to go away. Then the little guy stuck a sword in his gut! The party’s Halfling thief was unconscious. Meanwhile, Hamly started turning weapons into curtains, etc. And the party retreated. But, not before giving up some money to the little guys, and having some other stuff pilfered including some jewels and a potion. [By the way, I love Kesher’s drawing of the gang. I showed it to everyone after the session and we all had a good laugh. In the first session one of the Halflings in the party was a part-time distributor for Old Shire…]
*Summary
We’ve been having a great time in the Darkness Beneath. There’s a good chance the party will return there in our next session to Fight On!
