Greetings, this is my first post. I have Adventures in Fantasy. I'm really interested in exploring it more. Is anyone here interested in doing a fan update, revision, & expansion to Arneson & Sniders' rules?

I have a copy of AiF also, but I'm not sure how many folks do. Makes it hard to get a group together to discuss the game. I'd be interested in discussing the game and I'd bet that Havard would be interested as well.
However, as far as a "update, revision, & expansion" goes, we don't have the rights to the game.

Cool. I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been. I would want to do something like a fan remake with a subtitle stating "inspired by Snider & Arneson's fantasy rules". A project just for fun. I like AiF but there's several spots that could be cleared up.

I have little to contribute in terms of rules stuff however. That was never my forte. My copy of AiF is on the the way though -Havard

I'd be interested in setting up a blog, pb workspace, google group, etc. for all participants to post thoughts and ideas. Any ideas on that part? Congratulations on your acquisition of a copy of AiF. I think you'll find it's a "good game" but definitely needs some clarification and clean up in a few areas.

With Dragons at Dawn on one side and Powers & Perils on another, not sure how large of a niche there is for AiF itself.

That's definitely a valid point. AiF may just be too small of a niche itself. I'll post some topics soon to see if any interest is there....

Karnak, Welcome, Two places we have had fairly recent discussions of AiF are here odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=blackmoor&action=display&thread=4591and here blackmoor.mystara.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=464There's definetly a group of folks who would be interested in hearing what you might have to say about AiF, including a few who played it back in the day on the Blackmoor forum, so I would encourage you to start a blog or posts or what have you. It'd be great to have another voice looking closer at the rules and even creating house rules for the game. But... a "revision" that restates the existing rules and tables with some clarifications added would violate the copyrights held by the Arneson estate, as has been mentioned.

Thanks for the welcome. I'll check those two areas out. I was in a rush on the original post. I would like to examine AiF & do a tribute game inspired by that exploration of the rules. An evolution of the rules? Sure. An outright copyright violation was never my intention. Something similar to the retroclones of D&D but with the agreed upon problems "fixed".

Well, as Falconer mentioned, Dragons at Dawn does draw on some of the aspects found in AiF that derive from the earlier Blackmoor campaign. But "something similar to the retroclones of D&D" is, as we've been saying, illegal. The D&D retroclones exist because of the open gaming liscence. No such liscence exists for AiF. You could create a game using similar rules - game rules can't be copyrighted - but the actual execution - tables, charts, names, lists, specific chances etc., would have to be very different. I'd advise you to stick with a house rules document.

I think the house rules document is what I'm going to do since Dragons at Dawn covers much of the same ground. I think an indepth examination of AiF will be the first subject of my new blog. That should satisy the itch.

The blog is setup and a welcome post is available. I have a draft of the first two posts examining AiF in greater detail. I will complete them both this weekend. If anyone is interested, the blog is located at semiretiredgamer.blogspot.com/.

I joined! Oh, and you can modify your link by setting it up like this: The first tag should be url=(url) phrase you want highlighted /url (I left the brackets off so it wouldn't try to make a link...) Thus: Karnak's Awesome New Blog

@the Perilous Dreamer - That's very interesting info. I'm going to mention those books in my next blog post; named in the intro of Book of Adventure. Do you mind if I mention your post here on my blog? Better yet, you mind commenting on my blog with that info?
