I'm considering at last putting away my old yellow Judges Guild DM screen from the 1970's becasue it's showing its age.
I bought a tri-fold plastic screen that has space to put all kinds of stuff inside. While I could simply copy the JG tables, it seems like this would be a good time to design one from scratch (and the JG screen duplicates some tables, which I don't need to do.)
What should go on it? Any suggestions?

Hit tables, saving throws, Clerics vs. undead. That's what I had on mine. After that, whatever you think you'll need on a regular basis.
If I were making a new one, I'd leave a space with a clip (like for specials in a menu) where I could put the level's wandering monster tables. I might even leave a space where I could put the map; that would free up the space behind the screen for dice and/or miniatures.
Old school play teaches me, more and more, how little you need instead of how much. Three whole panels seems like a waste of space almost...

I like that clip idea! Hrm...it'd be cool to have a nice steel DM screen with all the tables etched into it and the text filled black, with blank spaces so you could magnet little pieces of paper to the surface.

Depending on how you handle magic & treasure, you could throw on a few random rolling tables and the like.

And with a steel screen, you could use it to whack unruly players should the need arise...just kidding.
I do like the idea of being able to use magnets. That would rock!

You may want to check out Paul Stormberg's massive 8-panel DM Screen in the DF downloads section @ www.dragonsfoot.org/fe/#FEDM3 if only for ideas and inspiration.

Good catch, grodog. I'd forgotten that Paul had done this! Clearly that's more information than I want on a screen, but it gives me some good ideas!

Yes, it's more than I need as well (I don't need any psionics combat tables, for example), but I figure that Paul covers so many bases there that you can't help but find something useful in there

I made my own for the landscape tri-fold screen. I have an attack bonus chart (my from THAC0? musing), a saving throw matrix, cleric vs. undead, movement/time/light (rates, time for certain activities, and radii), , NPC & monster reaction table, NPC & Monster Loyalty table, burning oil rules and scatter table, sighting info, gaze effects, and the rules for my combat sequence. Oh, and a list of common spells with suggested costs, if the PCs are bargaining with an NPC caster.

If I remember correctly, I took most of these from the suggestions in the DMG (for Cleric spells) and the Hackmaster GMG (for MU spells). I don't remember if I messed with the prices, or not. I may have, because I re-did the price lists for my game, some time back. But these may have been added later, and I don't remember putting much thought into them. Anyway…

I'd love to get the sheets that make up the screen as a whole - maybe as PDFs?

philotomy - Thanks! It's nice to see how other people do this kind of stuff. I struggle with potion, scroll and spell costs.

After digging into Paul Stormberg's updated DMScreen file I pointed to above, I decided I wanted to create my own screen with all of my favorite charts, etc. in it. I certainly drew some from Paul's charts, but have several others that I've considered standard over the years (as well as several from the DM Log, too).
I'll post them all, once I see if I can actually fit them onto a single four-panel screen or not!
