Because the OSR community always inspires me so much I thought I should start a blog to collect my own contributions to the hobby. Most will be public domain, if possible. First out is a map for a dungeon I ran last weekend. This starts off a series of posts with monsters and spells that will finish with the dungeon itself - room descriptions and background and all - in a few weeks time. Welcome to the Naked Knight Inn!

Very nice! May I ask how this was used exactly? I play with my kids, wife and a few friends and we all prefer smaller dungeons. This is smaller than what I typically run but would fit in well with other such small tombs for a barrow downs type place.

I ran it in a 5 hour session for a group of 5 first level characters + 2 henchmen (also first level characters). There's a few orcs and a few monsters in the dungeon, that will all be published later on the blog. The group I ran it for explored 7 of the 12 rooms in that time (I count the corridors and passages as rooms too). 9 characters died in that session, so they had to be reinforced with another adventuring group What exactly do you want to know? As I said in my first post the dungeon itself will be posted later, finishing a series of posts with all the monsters and spells. I decided to portion it out to keep a steady publishing pace for the next few weeks, as well as keep a good organization on the blog. My plan is to make good use of tags to make it easy to find content on the blog in the future. By the way, what kind of content would people like to see? Dungeon maps? Complete adventures? Hex maps? Spells? Monsters? Traps?

By the way, I scheduled a whole bunch of posts to be published on mondays and thursdays over the next few weeks. I figured I wanted to post regularly.
Is this a good way to go, or should I rather post a chunk of posts when I have material to share?

A little more than a week ago 6 lvl 1 characters met 2 of these and said "Just two! This is easy!" A few rounds later the 3 surviving characters ran from the last bug, barely escaping. Afterwards the following conversation took place: Player 1: "shirt! What an amateur mistake! Of course we shouldn't have taken them head on! We should have brought oil flasks or something! Why didn't we bring oil flasks?" Player 2: "... I have oil flasks."

Yeah, that's a dangerous one for 1st level characters to tackle head on, with the combo of low AC and high HD... Those that lived have learned...

Today's monster lived in the water room in the top right corner of the map previously posted. It stuck to the edges of the pool and was very hard to detect. Until one of the characters took a swim, that is. Meet the Black Jellyfish

Today's post is about orcs from the Bordur tribe. A slightly modified orc pack that will hopefully surprise the players a bit.

Another spell popped up on the blog today; Agonizing Screech. Perhaps more interesting to some is the fact that I've updated the post about the Reptile Bear to include an illustration. A couple of posts from now there will be a complete dungeon adventure including all the elements so far published, so stay tuned

Last Thursday a small dungeon map was posted. I've also realised that I can only write so much material simultaneously and other writing commitments are craving my time right now, so I'll have to reduce the pace of publishing on the blog to be more sporadic from now on. A shame, as the list of ideas for content is ever-growing

I like your beetles and the Stinking Fog spell. I have some similar beetles in my game that are low level mooks for the "big evil" of my campaign. And yet, they are the most hated by my players.

I had a bunch of first level characters run into two of those beetles. To be honest I hadn't really contemplated how incredibly dangerous the high HD and low AC combo is - especially to low level PCs. It was, however, hilarious to see their asses handed to them after one of them declared the first round that "those little bugs are nothing!" How did you think when you designed yours? I flipped through the monster chapter and found a monster that was similar in size and speed to what I had in mind, then modified the AC a bit to account for the carapace. They would possibly have turned out a lot less dangerous had I thought anything about what level of characters would encounter them.

nice blog, i've started following. i'm curious though, do you do your maps digitally? they look very similar to other maps i've seen around, i think dyson's maps come to mind. i'm wondering if they look so similar because there is a common source tool used.

I tried to do mapping in Gimp for some time, but I never had the patience to learn I draw by hand and scan in, then correct a few details digitally if needed. I believe Dyson Logos does the same. He's a huge inspiration, so there's no real coincidence that my mapping style looks similar. What better way to start out than trying to emulate what I consider to be a near perfect style, right? Beside the maps on the blog I've done a handful of maps for last years's Secret Santicore, and that's the full extent of my dungeon mapping experience. I figure my style will gradually grow into a more personal style the more I do.

Not as crisp as your previous maps. I like both styles of pen, maybe this one a bit more. But I can see different styles being used for different reasons. Mmmm, I hope that was helpful, doesn't seem as such. I like 'em both, what can I say! I dig your crosshatching too! --Ron--
