Hello all!
So, I have been loving the PC game: Shadowrun Returns. This was a kickstarter RPG for the PC and tablets that has an "old school" feel to it. Combat is turn based and there are tons of dialog options.
One of my favorite things is the Summoning rules in the game. Basically, the game is classless so you have skills. Summoning and Spirit Control are the two skills I want to talk about.
I don't want to introduce skills but figure summoning could be a class ability with control determined by class level.
In Shadowrun you can summon spirits in one of two ways:
The first is Fetishes. These are one time use items that summon an elemental (usually) spirit of a specific level.
The second method is through "summon points" I'll call them. Like a burning trash can can be used to summon a flame elemental, a water tank can be used to summon a water elemental, etc. Then there are interesting things like a toxic waste barrel being used to summon a "poison spirit"(I forget what they call them) and a grave being used to summon a spirit of death (as apposed to ghost or wight, the death spirit is some nasty looking nightmare thing).
The summon points allow you to summon that specific spirit once or twice (if your skill is high enough).
Why do I want to add this to my game? Well, because it is fun in Shadowrun Returns! and it seems like it could work in DD. basically, the spirits give you 1 round of assistance in combat. You can keep them around longer but it gets harder to control them the longer they are around. So, keeping the spirit for 2 rounds is usually safe but 3+ it gets harder and harder and if they break free, they attack you!
DD Elementals are massive HD monsters so I was thinking of making toned down versions able to be summoned. 1HD, 3 HD, 5 HD and 7 HD. With each progression getting an added ability as well as their attack matrix and hit points per HD.
Like a 1 HD Flame elemental can cast a "Flame Missile 1d6+1" each round, a 3 HD Flame Elemental can cast the same Flame Missile but can also cast a "Burning Eyes" once every 3 rounds that blinds a character for 2-3 rounds (taken from Shadowrun Returns). A 5 HD can do all the above plus Fireball once per 3 rounds, a 7 HD can do ? (Haven't thought of anything yet)
So, if this interests you, maybe you have some ideas on how to make this work? There seem to be all sort of creative tinkerers on these forums
