This is the same game I was in last year. This game was run in the basement of the former Gygax home in Lake Geneva. This was where Chainmail was one of the places where the game was first play tested in the very early 70s, among a lot of other games, including D&D. The scenario was written by Gygax. Two Viking raiders have landed on the Norman coast, in pursuit of a damaged ship transporting treasure and the betrothed of Sir Hugh Fitz William. The Norman ship has run aground and the lady, treasure and escorts have fled to the safety of a small palisaded fort nearby. Inside are now 15 heavy footmen, 10 archers, 3 ladies, and a pile of treasure. Nearby, two longships have landed a force of 30 axemen, 20 spearmen, 8 archers, and a pair of Viking leaders. The Vikings advance in two groups: The Norman bowmen obliterate the first group of Viking axemen as their spearmen push forward and the Viking archers fire ineffectively. Meanwhile, the Normans sortie a small group of men to cover the flank of the fort (left). Battle is joined as the Norman sortie charges down at the spearmen. The Archers were most effective yet again: The first group of Vikings are obliterated with some loss to the Normans. The second group now approaches after swinging wide. They, too, learn the power of the Norman archers: Here comes the cavalry to finish things, though the fort garrison had things well in hand: The victorious commanders:

Those are 40mm Elastolins, made from just after WW2 to sometime in the 60s or 70s. They were available hand painted back in the day. Paul has spent years building up his collection.

Also, if you're interested, there are some on sale on Ebay right now. They're running about $4 each, which, with the way figure prices are going, is starting to look attractive!

Surely that's comparable to their original prices when adjusted for inflation.

Colored sand from Michael's. Used for all kinds of stuff... blue for water, white for ice, black for asphalt roads, green for fields. And you can mix it right in after the game since it's such a tiny percentage.
