This is a semi-visual play report of a Chainmail game at Garycon VI last weekend run by Kevin Cabai. I was the Elf CinC (Beren, the only human BTW) and took command of the Elf Center as my subordinate commanders fought the skirmishers and cavalry across the wider field that sought to confuse and disrupt the Dwarf advance (my cavalry commander was mentioned in dispatches for the slaying of the Dwarf King in a glorious charge right into the midst of the Dwarf army). Losses were roughly proportional (when we called it they were slightly over 50% for the Elves, about 60% or so for the Dwarves, though they were more numerous to start).
First Age -- Beren leads the Green Elves and survivors of Doriath to destroy the Dwarven invaders and recover the Silmaril... (some pics are fuzzy -- stupid iPhone)
The Dwarves approach the crossing of the Sarn; the remnants of Thingol's Guard take position
"Hold fast, Elves -- Beren has some surprises prepared for them."
Reverse angle - the Dwarves are attacked from multiple locations by previously hidden Green Elf Skirmishers
The very Trees rise up to aid the Elves (those guys left a mark!):
At last, the Dwarves charge the Elf center (to be met by the Guards counter-charge) as smaller battles rage across the field. It was a grim and chaotic day.
Later, the Elf left had broken, but the Dwarf right had followed...now, the remnants of the Guard sweeps the Dwarves from right to left. In the center, the Elf Pike charges the Dwarf Prince (his father was just slain off camera to the upper left by the arriving Elf Cavalry.
As the battle winds down, the Dwarves, though tactically exhausted, managed to slip one cowardly unit (bottom left) from the battle - their prize, the Silmaril Still, neither the Dwarf King nor his heir would ever wear it, as they both lay dead on the field.
It was declared a minor victory for the Dwarves - apparently they valued the capture of the Silmaril more than the loss of their King and Army. It was a grim toll for the Elves, though, for many of them had fallen. Their arrows had proven to be much negated by strong Dwarf armor -- it was mainly sword and spear work this day.
"Only a Dwarf would bring a dog to war."
