There was actually a contest here about this from Guy Fullerton but it never got answered. I just left him a comment to reveal the mystery but maybe someone can actually win those two modules (I own them both and they are excellent). Anyway, as the other commentators stated it has to be a David LaForce illustration but where is it from?

Well it seems that we may soon have an answer judging from the various NEW comments on the blog! Let's hope Mr Fullerton can actually see them since it's been nearly a year before today's renewed interest

Thanks for posting this, lp. It's a great piece that I had never seen before. DSL (David S. Laforce aka Diesel) contributed artwork to the Drow series and Queen of the Demonweb Pits, but I don't believe this appears in one of those modules. I'd guess it is an outtake from one of those. Random Wizard asked Diesel himself in an interview where this came from, and he said: I remembered that I saw an unfamiliar DSL piece on the cover of "Players Association News" #10, a UK publication that predated Imagine magazine. I've never actually seen these publications - they are rare - but the Acaeum has a gallery of the covers. Perhaps this piece is from another issue.

I don't normally admire fantasy art, especially old school illustrations, but this reminds me of early Ligne Claire. Count me among the curious.
