I'm as excited as anyone, and more than most, over Zenopus's gradual revelations of he content of the Holmes Manuscript. However, for me, it does have a special significance because of its impact on he BLUEHOLME™ rules. The first thing I had to do was decide whether I should follow the rules as published, or the manuscript. Well, it's never that simple. The outcome is actually that I will mostly follow the published rules, because that is what BLUEHOLME™ is simulating, after all. Where the manuscript is invaluable, however, is in clearing up those ambiguities that have crept in due to the editing process.
Already there are two impacts on BLUEHOLME™:
1. The Charisma modifier will revert o that in the Blue Book, rather than the OD&D style used in the first printing of the BLUEHOLME™ Prentice Rules. This is actually a good thing, because Charisma is the prime requisite for witches in the Compleat Rules. Prime requisites normally have no effect other than XP modifiers, so this brings witches more closely into line with the other classes.
2. Elf dual-classing is now made much clearer. BLUEHOLME™ will change to reflect that and apply it to all types of multi-classing. The tricky issue of attack and saving throw tables will most likely be resolved by taking the average of the target roll for the effective character level in all the classes. E.g. a 3rd level fighter / 2nd level magic-user would use the average to-hit roll of a 5th level fighter and 5th-level magic-user. Holmes uses the d6 hit die for elfin fighter/magic-users, so the principle becomes that you use the average of all classes. Yes, this might mean weird dice like d5 for cleric/thieves (roll d10 and divide by 2) or d7 for cleric/fighters(roll d8, re-roll any result of 8).
