How about throwing everyone for a loop. A vegetarian green dragon.
I was also thinking of a Alice in WOnderland twist. At the exit to the level you see a Hooka smoking Catapiller (please ignore spelling errors), that asks you a riddle which you must answer before proceeding. If you have used the various spores to create halucinations they would not believe what they are seeing. If they get the riddle wrong have the catapiller transform into a level and ability appropriate creature like a shpinx or dragon.
