What do you suppose the pool does to its slaves? If it can grow all the food it needs with sunlight and catch the rest out of the air, what it really wants is mobility.
Its like a viscous liquid God. Maybe it can turn animals and people into familiars and live on a host, making decisions for it. What if all the animals in the vicinity of the pool had been commandeered. What if it is not actually hostile to life but merely curious.
The slime-touched missionaries may wander far and learn the mysteries of the world.
