I got an e-mail on this and thought I'd share. I couldn't decide if I should put it in Boot Hill or with X-Plorers... - M.Shotguns n Saddles! OSR Wild West Role Playing!
If you liked my X-Plorers RPG and the way I took inspiration from OD&D but changed things around...and you've been itching to run some good old cinematic wild west adventures, you might want to check out my new game. The preview gives you character generation, which will give you a good idea about how the rest of the game is going to work
Shotguns –n- Saddles
Cowboy up! Old School, New rules! Wild West Role Playing!
OD&D inspired, but taken in a different direction. NOT a Boot Hill retro-clone, or a retro clone at all, but filled with rules that will feel familiar.

Thank you for posting the Finarvyn. The hardest part about putting out a new game designed for a small niche of people (old school western lovers) is actually getting the game into the hands of those people (or at least letting them know it exists). I'm actually glad this wound up on this forum because I think people who still appreciate Boot Hill will probably enjoy this game as well, and If I'm lucky they will enjoy it even more! (I can dream, right? ). That said, I want to make sure any prospective customers thinking about this purchase know that this IS NOT a retro clone of Boot Hill. In fact, it really isn't a retro-clone at all. I took a lot of core concepts from OD&D and used them to create a western game that I think emulates the genre and still gives the feeling like this game could have been published back in the late 70s. I designed it to give a solid core (inspired from OD&D...most of those core mechanics still work to this day), but leave just enough "open to interpretation" by the GM to make the game truly his (and his players) own. Since the writing is all original, I opted to go the route of creative commons instead of OGL. This gives other people free reign to create adventures and supplements with ease. Since the target audience for westerns is a bit slim, I'm hoping this will help unite some gamers so there is more of the good stuff (adventures) to go around for everyone. It's a big goal for a small game...but one can hope. I purposely made the games full size preview on RPGnow and Drive Thru include the entire character generation section. While this doesn't give you everything you need to play (hey, a guy has to raise a little money, hopefully to use to bring out more stuff later) it does give you a very good idea of how the core mechanics of OD&D have been modified and the basics of what a character will look like. I figure anyone who reads that and likes the ideas is sure to like the game, so it will be money well invested. If someone reads the preview and dislikes it, chances are they won't like the rest of the game either...so no dissatisfied customers. Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

Thank you for posting the Finarvyn I'm just glad we managed to get you back on the boards again. Hopefully you'll find some other OD&D goodness to discuss as well!

I purchased the rules and on the whole I rather like them! The background chart could use a little tweaking, but only if the person rolling up a character lacks the imagination to call the background something else. I like the fact that the game is set in a fictional west, but I encourage anybody interested in doing some research about the real west. Fact is generally for interesting than fiction concerning the old west! I only had one question about the map scale of the three maps. The saloon is obviously a 1"=5', but he others are obviously a bit bigger. I'ts my only complaint really that no scale was listed. I like the fact it is very printer friendly! Thank you!

Well done. Having perused this, and read parts in detail, it looks great! Very nicely presented. Chapters 11 and 15 are terrific. Chapter 11, “The S-n-S West,” gives loads of ideas for a GM, and Ch. 15 contains stats and descriptions for 24 “Legends of the West” from Bat Masterson to Wyatt Earp. Anyone running a Wild West game of just about any sort could get something out of them, I’d say. I like the “Showdown Rules,” the high-drama meeting of two gunfighters typical of the movies. As the author says, this could be handled by usual combat, but he also gives special rules for showdowns. Neat idea. There’s a lot of other stuff I haven’t got into in detail, but it all seems clear and well organized.
Regards

Thanks for the feedback. I think a designer is always a little nervous when he releases something he personally thinks is great...because you never know what other people will think. the response so far have been mostly positive. I'm glad so many people are enjoying the direction I took this OSR game. The maps are all 5' (or 1"). guess I should have mentioned that. woops.

I've just purchased and downloaded the file. I've barely even been at home the past two weeks, so I uploaded S&S to my Kindle and will be checking it out over the next few days. A quick read-through looks pretty good!

It's up on whitewash city...I know it's a site that tries to include every wild west game, but is it wrong for me to feel as if i've "arrived" by having him notice me (and saying some nice things). That's always been one of my go-to sites when I'm bitten by the wild west RPG or miniature bug...makes me feel like I'm officially part of this hobby I love so much.

I'd say you "arrived" just fine. I like the open ended nature of the game. You have managed to do quite a lot with a small amount of pages. And it's affordable! Nice work! Are you planning on publishing anything else for the game?

Are you planning on publishing anything else for the game? Yep. I rather do adventures, but I do have a few genre mashing supplements in mind. I have a supernatural add on supplement done, but not illustrated. Not sure if I want to put it out right away...I sort of want people to experience the game without that stuff added for s while. It's creative commons for adventures and supplements...it's my hopes that some creative types will fall in love with the game and write some adventures....one can hope

I recently bought the PDF for this game. I was really impressed and had a lot of fun just making characters and testing out fistfights and gunfights. I really hope I get a chance to play a Campaign soon.
