I've been wondering what happened to my battle axe! Please either return it or send me 7gp. Drats! Foiled again.

I received my copy today and I am delighted with the Judge Friendly introductory adventure, amongst enjoying the artwork and presentation. Great work. I'm excited to give it a whirl.

In keeping with the spirit of the game, goblins should only say " gobble, gobble, gobble", orcs snort like boars, kobolds yap like a dog, and gnolls laugh like a hyena. Unless of course the player can speak the same language... then it sounds like whatever English accent you want! This would be very silly and highly entertaining!

Excellent! I was just thinking about this game the other day. (The inevitable question) Will it be another boxed set?

No cleric this time, huh? Have you added a thief-type by chance.
I like this little game. I really dig your fun art.

I hope I can nab one of the boxed editions this time. A fun little game that my oldest daughter will enjoy playing with me.

The new version has the four standard races, and four classes: Fighter Myrmidon (fighter/mage hybrid) Thief Wizard The first run was limited because it was a prototype, a learning experience. With the new sets, I'll keep doing print runs as long as people want to buy them. Last night while working on some sketches, my laughing caused the family to grow suspicious . I'm having too much fun working on the art; I feel like a kid again. The new player pdf should be up this week, with hyperlinks and bookmarks.

Reading through the new Player's Book now is making me feel a bit like a kid again. I can't get this big, stupid smile off my face. Now, to decide... mini-campaign set in the world of Talisman or Dragon's Lair?

Mashing up S&SS with Talisman would be awesome, turning spaces into micro-dungeons, players racing across the board to complete a series of quests... Yeah!
If anyone is able to make it and are interested, I just got a couple of S&SS games added to this year's NTRPGCon on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. I'll be running a S&SS funhouse dungeon crawl called "Demon Castle from Outer Space."

VL, are you updating the GM book as well or will it stay as-is?
Also, is it up to us to provide our own covers if we're printing at home or are you working on new covers or what?
EDIT - I must admit it's a bit of a pity to lose a lot of the illustrations from the older Player's Book. As much fun as the funny pieces are, I also really like most of the 'serious' ones from the original.

I've redone the GM book; it is mostly the same with a few changes: The M- stat has been added, a step below M0 monsters (really weak 1hp monsters). Monster damage bonus has been reduced to half the level. References to alignment and clerics have been removed, and myrmidons added. Added a brief section on creating your own dungeon. A few other trivial differences. The new free pdfs do not include the full page art, so that it improves the function of a pdf for reference (no "wasted pages" to scroll through, less art keeps the file size down for easier storage and faster downloads), and gives an incentive to buy the print version. The same for the covers. The new Player pdf has 21 pages, but booklets come in 4-page increments, so there will be 3 full page drawings that weren't included in the pdf. I consider the art from the first set to be cringe-worthy. I still get requests for the OCE (original collector's edition), so it is possible I might eventually do a second print run of that. I'm currently busy working on the rest of the art for the new version (GM art, full page drawings, cover) which will include both "fun" and "serious" art. I am dumbstruck at the number of downloads, considering the game hasn't had much publicity. I've only announced the new S&SS here, the acaeum, and df, along with the VL website and being listed with the 2015 NTRPGCon games. The OSRIC Player's Guide has been available as a free download for about 2&1/3 years, and the new S&SS pdf has more than double the amount of downloads in just 3 days. The new S&SS has almost twice as many downloads as the old S&SS, and that has been available for about 2 years.

Excellent. Thanks for your response. Makes sense to me. I'm glad to hear about the apparent success of S&SS despite the lack of wide-spread attention, etc.

Glee!!! The new illustrations are wonderful, especially the Erol Otus-like magic-user w/ scroll. (I still miss the halfling overlooking his shire from the old Player's Book.) I'm looking forward, when I've the chance, to making my own covers and using your nice idea of red for the PB and blue cover for the GM book with the intent of printing out a small, short houserule booklet with.... dun dunn DUUHHHNN...a goldenrod cover. I've thought more about the Talisman vs. Dragon's Lair thing and Talisman is more difficult as it's really a wild, kitchen-sink D&D-type world already. Also...a spell list I'd have to work out. Blech. Dragon's Lair. Well, I've found a map of "The Realm". Not sure where it originated from and I haven't found and high res version but it's a start. Plus I get to watch episodes of the Saturday morning cartoon for extra fun stuff too. Besides... I would get to add silly and crazy monsters like the Mud Men and Giddy-Goons and those....tentacles with eyes and so on. Yay! And Dirk the Daring could be slightly older (though not much wiser...he is Dirk after all) and Prince by now (Daphne is a Princess)... The presence of the 6 Charisma Daphne could cause some interesting problems I'm sure. Surely the mighty Singe hasn't truly been vanquished. Poor Dirk has to stay home and take care of boring stuff. He'll need more than his nearly-keystone-cop men-at-arms to take care of Singe's nefarious machinations.

There was a Dragon's Lair cartoon series?! It does sound funny to think of 6 CHA being hot. LOL. Btw, the hairy-handed mullet gamer from the RC makes an appearance in one of the full-page drawings in the new GM book. machfront, great minds think alike! After I get the boxed set and a few adventures released for S&SS, I would like to start a S&SS Zine. The Zine would include submissions for rule options, S&SS-related articles, letters, rants, and comics. Maybe 2-4 issues a year. kesher, I liked the single monster stat so much I stole it from T&T. The earliest versions of S&SS were a lot closer to T&T since it evolved from tinkering with a 1d6 version of Ken's game. Originally, you advanced in levels by increasing your stats. If I ever get the above stuff done, I'd eventually like to put out a trollish edition of the S&SS Player's book.

Yes. Dragon's Lair cartoon. Every time the show went to a commercial break it would be a cliff-hanger. Then a narrator would list Dirk's choices and say: "What would you do?" When the show came back from commercial the above would be re-stated or the consequences of the lesser of the choices shown, then the narrator would intone something like "Luckily, Dirk decided to..." and the show would continue on. The entire series is available as a DVD(R?)-on-demand sort of thing from...Warner or...whoever owns it. Easy to get from Amazon. Someone uploaded the first four episodes to YouTube as one video a while back. Hm. Darn. A zine. Well then goldenrod would be perfect for that right? I mean...the UK print of the Fifth ed. of T&T...the first issue of White Dwarf,etc.,etc. I might have to find another color for my houserule booklet. I was a T&T nutcase for a handful of years (about '07 to '11), running it pretty much exclusively and posting like a madman over at Vin's TrollBridge forums. It's crazy. What I came back to D&D-type games for was the structure (and I missed some explicit and implicit 'D&D-isms') but then I missed not only the simpler monster stat(s) but also the incredibly 'who cares?!?' wild and wooly-ness of T&T. I found a home in games like Swords & Wizardry:WhiteBox to keep a hold of that along with the D&D structure but when I have seen some not-quite-at-all-clone OSR games of late I've been seeing something approaching the best of both worlds (nothing is perfect without grabbing it by the horns and making it your own still of course). I'm getting a great deal of that from S&SS which is why I'm glad I've discovered it.* My only problem now is attempting to wedge in a bonus here or there in a smart fashion (depending on where it goes and when) since there's not much wiggle room when one deals with smaller scales of numbers. Doable certainly, but tricky. Note that that's not a complaint. *There's something to this, I think, that has to do with not wanting to wander too far afield of a game that's closer or is D&D. When it itself goes outside the usual boundaries (like Pits & Perils or S&SS itself of course), I don't feel as though I have to stay 'true' or something. When I want D&D I can use this or that. When I'm more of a mind to venture more outside but still with a semblance then games like this have a place. A great place. We all have our games that are decidedly not D&D. If anyone would have asked me years ago if I ever needed a game that existed perfectly in the ether between I would have likely balked.

What I love is that if you want a light ruleset but with lots of class and spell options, you can pair Steve’s Swords & Six-Siders with his OSRIC Player’s Guide. Not a seamless experience, but, who cares, if it hits the sweet spot! And the art is tops!
