PCs inflict damage multiplied by level, so a kobold with 22 hit points won't last for more than a round, typically. ... ...the easiest way to substantially improve from level to level is represented by a sort of "multiplicative" model. And for the critters, you need to have hit points that scale that way. If (just as an example) 1st level PCs are dealing an average of 3 points of damage, 2nd level PCs 10 points, 3rd level PCs 30 points, 4th level PCs 100 points, then there is very little a new 1st level PC can contribute to an existing group of 4th level PCs. Nope, it simply doesn't work that way. My apologies if I misunderstood rabindranath72I suggest you give a thorough read to the material, and try running a session to get a better feel for how it actually works and plays. My concerns come from reading the SRD, but that's not a playable game; it's more like a collection of house rules on top of a game I don't have. Is there a free primer somewhere?

I don't think you misunderstood; it's just that the information you have got reading a few bits from the SRD is not enough to get a full picture of how the game actually works, so any judgment you may make will be perforce biased. There's no free primer as far as I know.

Given the structure of the game, I suppose a primer wouldn't be very useful. From what I see in the SRD, except for the setting, the game is all there, although things are not organised. It's more a matter of organisation than lack of material. If I had to suggest, I'd say go in this order: 1) Character Rules (pay attention in particular to Icons-related concepts) 2) Races 3) Classes 4) Icons 5) Running the Game 6) Combat Rules 7) Monsters 8) Magic Items Above all, try to run a game; it's the best way to assess the "worth" of a game

FWIW, ENworld has a nice shiny HTML version of the 13thAge SRD that is easier to work with and get around in.

Sad to see that no one else has any interest in this game. It's a nice rules set combined with a pretty nifty setting. I may move this thead to the 3E/4E/5E sub-board. In retrospect, it probably belongs there... I know it's 8 years later, but I'm a huge fan of 13th Age. I'm catching up on some of the old threads talking about the system, here. I hope you don't mind the thread necromancy!

It certainly is a mix of 3 and 4 E, previous edition bits and narrative elements all in one. It has a pretty busy G+ community. If anyone is interested, I archived the 13th Age G+ group on the Tapatalk forums. There are a lot of great discussions there, several with the game's designers.
