There are a few variants of BfM out there. One of them that has a Fantasy spin is called Battle for Angmar. It is one of Alan Emrich's designs. He is a college professor of game design and I believe he works with Victory Point Games. Unfortunately, for the life of me, I can not track it down on the web any where. Suffice it to say, instead of Moscow you have Angmar. Instead of Germans and Russians you have the Men & Elf Alliance vs. the Goblin & Trolls. The map and terrain is very much the same as well as the sequence of play.

The Victory Point Games "State of Siege" series is very enjoyable. These are solitaire games, in which you defend some central objective from a number of attacking forces that are controlled by the play of event cards. The Israelis defend Jerusalem in Israeli Independence; the Bolsheviks defend Moscow in Soviet Dawn; the French defend Paris in Levee en Mass, etc.
Most recently in this series, I played Cruel Necessity, which covers the period of the English Civil Wars, ca. 1640-1660. Parliament must defend London against the King's armies in the North and West; plus King Charles has armies in Scotland and Ireland that don't actually enter England, but can provide support for the Royalist armies there. When battles are fought, they are played out on a separate battle board--a fairly simple process, but adding some tactical flavor to the game
My game ended with a Royalist victory on the second-to-last card in the campaign. Even though I lost, I had fun with this, and will play it again.

EDIT: makofan of these boards is the guy who's teaching me how to wargame over HexWar.net. He's currently whipping me soundly teaching me the fine art of wargaming in "Napoleon at Waterloo" so I can get some chops. It's pretty fun

Nap at Waterloo is a classic intro game, hope you enjoy it.
Victory point is among my favorites up there with GMT. The games I buy from VP have a high % of hitting the table and are usually a lot of fun. States of Siege as mentioned is a fun solitaire system . Soviet Dawn is my go to for that. Just starting on the Nap 20 series. Looking for vassal opponent for Austerlitz 20 if anyone is up for that sometime

Favorite 2-player boardgames? My wife's birthday is coming up and I'd like to find an easy-to-learn game we could play to get back into boardgames; we have a closet full of them, but they're all 3+ players needed...

I've been playing battles from Command & Colors: Napoleonics from GMT Games. This is the base set, with the British (and occasionally) Portuguese fighting the French. The system is similar to GMT's Command & Colors Ancients, and more distantly, to Battle Cry and Memoir 44. So far the French have won at Rolica, Corunna, and Talavera, with the British taking a single win at Vimiero. This is not a detailed study of Napoleonic battle tactics--check out Clash of Arms Games or Operational Studies Group for that--but it is a fun gaming experience.

I played 'Roma' for the 1st time last eve. Fun 2 player game that incorporates cards and dice and other bits. Relatively simple, but has some depth to it. Each turn you are making multiple decisions. It is made by Queen games which makes quality game components www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16496/roma

Picked this game up from the FLGS yesterday. Looking fwd to giving it a go soon.
Also the old school RPG community needs some video reviewers like Marco here. He is an all-star.

Lately I've been playing the OGRE Pocket Edition lately. It's pretty much the same science fiction tank combat microgame that Steve Jackson wrote back in 1977, reprinted last year with a 1977 price of $2.95. It's a lot more portable than the 25-pound Designer's Edition. And cats seem to like it: More details in this post on my blog.

It is part of a course in game design that I have not yet had the time to digest, but it looks interesting. In any case, I thought that folks who followed this thread might like the free game . . . www.alanemrich.com/PGD/Week_05/PGD_Week05.htm Gonyaulax P.S. I like all thing OGRE/GEV also!

True story - I bought a copy of that $2.99 ogre when it came out at the FLGS (because why not?) - Since then though it has vanished! Thought it was maybe in my car somewhere but its not. Ah well, when it does show up it will be a fun little surprise

I thought it might be on that site, but it's a bit of a maze once you start opening linked pages and I wasn't positive. As a bonus StrikeForce can also be found there. I didn't remember that either. It's also an excellent game for beginning wargamers. I hope Merctime sees your post. Thanks for doing the digging.

The most recently played was Lord of the Rings RISK. I got it as a Christmas present a few years ago. It's the updated edition with the supplement added into the original package.

Picked up a copy of Castle Panic (plus the Wizards Tower expansion) at Gen Con last summer and we play that quite often. Fast play, more strategy involved than you'd think - we have a lot of fun with it.
I also just today got my copy of 1st Ed Space Hulk from Chgowiz and am very much looking forward to playing that soon.

I have a veritable boat load of space hulk stuff from just about every edition if you need some help with rules or scenarios.

Ok, been seeing a TON of hype for the game 'Splendor'. I like to support my FLGS so I picked it up out of curiosity the other day. Got to try it this eve with my wife. I now get what all the hype is about. Gamer crack. 30-40 minute filler that plays well with 2-4 people. Very tense towards the end. Rules are a page and a half and takes 10 minutes to learn and start playing. Only minor negatives, box too big, too expensive for what it is (does come with very high quality components including real poker chips) www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/148228/splendor

I played Unhappy King Charles! from GMT Games. This is a point-to-point, card-driven game on the first English Civil War, from 1642 to 1645. If you want to experience the frustrations felt by the original commanders in trying to raise troops, keep them together, and get them to the battlefield, this one's for you! (Although with much less personal risk of dysentery, gout, or scurvy.) The Royalists lost most of the battles, but still managed to control--by the very thinnest of margins--enough territory and resources to claim a victory.

Played Fief: France 1429 at a local game CON Thursday eve. www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/152470/fief-france-1429We had the max # of players, 6, full table. Lots of fun, game lasted about 4 hours. This game is very popular right now it seems. The game is fairly complex. Bishops, combat, sieges, elections, Cardinals, the Pope, the King, plagues, crop production, assassinations, ransoms, etc involved.

Blue Cross, White Ensign from GMT Games. The Swedes narrowly defeat the Russians at the naval battle of Gogland in 1788.
Struggle for New France from Schutze Games. The British win the French and Indian Wars.
The Confederate Rebellion from White Dog Games. Solitaire as the Union; the Rebs send me back home.

Final day of the local gaming CON for me, highlight was getting to play an old classic. We played the mid 80's West End Games printing/version pictured below. Fun, can see why it has been re-printed so often

Played 4 games of Talisman last month. When you play with weaselly, slimy backstabbers, it can get pretty heated! One guy is not talking to me right now I turned him into a toad, looted his rune sword, talisman, magic belt and book of orbs and ran for the centre!
