Didn't really 'need' a new game, but trying to help support a new FLGS that opened in town today - so I picked up Battle Line by GMT. It looks incredibly simple, yet cerebral and potentially fun to try with Mrs. Scaly boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/760/battle-lineIt's a 2 player Ancient era card game Two opponents face off across a 'battle line' and attempt to win the battle by taking 5 of 9 flags or 3 adjacent flags. Flags are decided by placing cards into 3 card poker-type hands on either side of the flag (similar to straight flush, 3 of a kind, straight, flush, etc). The side with the highest 'formation' of cards wins the flag. This is a rethemed version of Schotten-Totten with different graphics and wooden flag bits in place of the boundary stone cards. Game play is identical, except the cards run from 1 to 10 (not 9), you hold seven cards in your hand (not 6), and the rule that stones may only be claimed at the start of your turn is presented as an "advanced variant". Also the tactics cards were introduced by Battle Line; these cards were only added to later editions of Schotten-Totten. Some have reported that the production quality of the cards is inferior to the Schotten-Totten cards, however, for most readers Battle Line will be much easier to find in stores. In the second edition of GMT's Battle Line the card quality is higher. I own both and actually, Battle Line is easier to read and play. As for production quality they are hardly different and Battle Line comes with wooden pawns that make marking the flags that much easier on a smaller table. P.S. I have owned my Battle Line set since 2000 when it was published and it has been around the world with me played dozens of times( if not hundreds) and the cards are still standing up pretty well Yup, played this twice tonight. Very fun quick little game, plays in 30 minutes but is very cerebral. I thought the quality of the cards/components was fine. The rules are only 4 small pages and I watched a couple video reviews on BGG and was playing in no time. This is a nice game to introduce to 'non-gamers' it would seem.

I finished Bradley's D-Day over the weekend. This is a battalion-level game from Against the Odds that focuses on the American landings at Omaha and Utah Beaches. The Americans have to get ashore and stay ashore during the first 2 days of the invasion. In my game, the Americans could not establish their beachhead perimeters in sufficient depth, and also took excessive losses, so the Germans won.

I just got The Blitzkrieg Legend (the Gamers OCS) and A Distant Plain (GMT COIN III) in the mail today! I think ADP will hit the table first as OCS has a lot more counter clipping involved

"Say, do any of you guys know how to Madison?" I jest-it has been a few years since I last played and a few more years since I played regularly. But, ASL is great. What's your question?

It is OOP and therefore expensive so Im wondering which edition is best, the 2nd has errata and different art and map board material but Id prefer get the 1st if the errata are not too significant?
Also is Squad Leader (which is cheaper) so broken that ASL is a better investment?

Also is Squad Leader (which is cheaper) so broken that ASL is a better investment? I would recommend getting 2nd edition if you want the go the full monty right now. There were loads of errata and updated counters, etc from the first edition. But the thing to remember about ASL is that the game doesn't offer much without Beyond Valor (first module that contains all the eastern front counters, maps, and such you would need for play). So, I recommend you pickup one of the ASL starter kits. They are generally still available and introduce the game one piece at a time, including all the counters and maps you would need for those scenarios. From there you can expand your collection by purchasing the full rulebook and other modules or just moving on to the second or third starter kit. There are a ton of other squad level ww2 games out there but none of them cover the number of theaters and variety of equipment ASL does.

A quick blast of WRG's "Wargames Rules 1685~1845 (July 1979)" and "Wargames Rules for Armoured Warfare 1950~1985 (June 1979)" using paper chits with some old buddies. Both books almost as old as me

Yeah I hadn't played for years, and have no minis, so we did low points skirmishes with some paper/card rectangles!

Operation Battleaxe from Revolution Games and We Will Fight on the Marne and Vietnam Solitaire from White Dog Games. Nice, smaller, quick-playing wargames.

Tonight my friends and I played Last Night on Earth. We used the Blood in the Forest expansion though not the upgrades zombies (behemoth and feral). The scenario we randomly chose involves us needing to acquire explosives and blow up three zombie spawn points. Luckily I found two things of dynamite within two turns of searching and a friend was able to search out more dynamite from the deck shortly after. The zombie player did his best to thwart out efforts but the two other hero players held off the zombie horde long enough for us to complete the objective.

I've been looking at both Last Night on Earth and Zombicide at Gencon for two years now, but have been too cheap to buy either. Is LNoE worth the money? How are the expansions? How many players?
I made the mistake of picking up Zombie Survival, which looks good in principle but doesn't play very well, IMO. Plus it's limited to just for players.
What's the best buy out there for my zombie slaying buck?

I didn't care for Last Night on Earth the few times I played it, so I would recommend Zombicide out of the two.

Played two 6-player games of Railroad Tycoon on the weekend. Finished second both times I actually had the most VP's in each game, but I had too much debt

I started a game of Eldritch Horror last night. I'm playing solitaire with three characters, just to learn the system. So far my fearless investigators have solved the first of the three Azathoth mysteries; one guy also battled and defeated a Byakhee in Shanghai and closed the Gate there.

Currently I've been playing a lot of Settlers of Catan (w Seafarers) Yep, we almost always use the Seafarers expansion when playing Catan. I know there’s some new expansion that’s supposed to be better, but, whatever. Played two 6-player games of Railroad Tycoon on the weekend. Finished second both times I actually had the most VP's in each game, but I had too much debt Ooh, nice! We just busted this out for the first time a few weeks ago. We had 3 players, so we played the introductory Mexico map from the 2009 edition. Fun game!

I played Chicago Express last night with 4 people. Fun game. I introduced it to some non gamer friends. I had bought it awhile back but never gotten a chance to play it. The only other 'train game' I had played before was American Rails which I liked (and thus sought this game out to buy).

Eldritch Horror ended with Azathoth eating the world. The world fared somewhat better, although history was changed, when I played Academy's 1775 Rebellion. The British staged a come-from-behind rally to win the American Revolution.

They can't divide 27 by 3 or figure out some rough odds in their head when making a decision? Use your brain before it turns to mush watching sitcoms people. The luck factor is basically zero in this game which is fun/cool.

I believe if you search this very website, you can find makofan espousing that Squad Leader is the OD&D to ASL's AD&D. It did tempt me to pick up Squad Leader, but alas my board games aren't really getting played right now.
