The Caucasus Campaign from GMT Games. This covers the German 1942 drive into the Caucasus region, with the eventual hope of capturing the Russian oil fields on the Caspian Sea. An interesting system, with some terrain and unit types not often seen in other WWII games. But hard for the Germans to win; they made a respectable effort here, but still came up short of the victory points they needed.

Played MBT today. Scenario loosely based on the 10,000. Americans trapped behind West German lines sometime in the early 90s. Ended up a satisfying tank fur ball.

This was a kickstarter reward that I managed to get to the table a few days after opening. Holdfast Pacific 1941-5 from Worthington Publishing. Light, fun, Victory in the Pacific with blocks and some streamlined mechanics.

Finished another GMT game--1989: Dawn of Freedom. This is more of a political game than a wargame; the Communist regimes of Eastern Europe are trying to hold onto power as the Soviet Union withdraws its military and political support. The last time I played this, the Communists won big; this time, after a long, drawn-out struggle, the Democratic forces triumphed.

For some reason that one didn't grab us like Labyrinth or some of the COIN series. I think a couple mechanisms were a little rough around the edges, but I can't put finger on what it was now a couple years later...

I only played Labyrinth once, though I thought it was good. But I have stayed active with the COIN series. Should see Colonial Twilight arriving soon!

More Commie bashing--this time in the form of Holdfast: Korea from Worthington Publishing. This covers the mobile phase (first year) of the Korean War at a divisional scale (except for the Red Chinese, who have armies). My game ended with a victory for the United Nations.

And another game from Worthington: New York 1776. This features the British campaign to capture New York City and surrounding territories, and, if possible, to pin and destroy the rascally Rebel army. In my game, the British won: they failed to eliminate Washington, but they held New York City and reduced the Rebel army to below 10 strength points.

We played a game of C&C:NAPPY. After playing ANCIENTS for so long, the seemingly little changes in NAPPY make a big difference in game play. Look forward to more...

Played another round of C&C: NAPPY. Just lost 5 banners to six! This losing streak must end! I even asked my opponent what I did wrong. He responded, "Nothing as far as I can tell." Maybe try something different just to get rid of the gremlins...

Played the solitaire game AGRICOLA: MASTER OF BRITAIN. Agricola kept the growling tribes under his heel and was indeed, the Master Of Britain! (Actually, it was a lot closer to "just winning by the skin of our teeth" if you want to be honest...)

I played a four-faction, nine-round game of GMT's Crown of Roses. Actually called the game at the end of the sixth round, since the Yorkists were so far ahead it didn't seem possible anyone could catch them (by that point, they had more nobles on the board than all the other factions combined, and more votes in Parliament than all the other factions combined). I wasn't particularly enamored with the game system, and wouldn't be in a hurry to play it again.

I was at a board game night yesterday at my local store, we played Dark Souls and Zombicide Black Plague. Two fun games, although I'm unsure how re-playable Dark Souls would be. I'll probably pick up some edition of Zombicide, though. I like those co-op games.

The last 4 wargames I have played have been Austerlitz 20 (VPG), Smolensk 20 (Fading Glory GMT), Jena 20 (C3i) and today's game of Borodino 20 (Fading Glory GMT). Sort of became addicted to these quickly/ Today I won at Borodino as the Anti-French. First game we have played that the French has not won. I am starting to feel guilty that I am not playing other games..

I played "A Deadly Race" scenario from Old School Tactical, a WWII squad-level game from Flying Pig Games. It's five days since the start of Operation Barbarossa, and the Russians are reeling back from the frontier. In this scenario, a German recon force is trying to cut off the retreat of some Russian units. Both sides score for victory points for casualties inflicted, but the Russians also get points for exiting their units off the map (they start on the western edge and have to cross the map to the east side). The Russians won, 18 to 11, mostly for exited units. The Germans shot up some Russian squads and vehicles, but just couldn't get across the map and in place to block the general exodus.
I've only played the first two scenarios from Old School Tactical, but so far I like it. At only 21 pages, the rules system is much less heavy than some competing squad-level systems such as ASL and ATS, but still seems to cover most the things you'd expect to see in a game at this level. I'd probably compare it most closely to the Conflict of Heroes system in terms of overall complexity.

I met up with a buddy at the FLGS today and played my recently acquired copy of www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/128996/1775-rebellionI wanted to see how/why it is ranked 25 on BGG wargame list and have been hearing good things about it. It was light and fun and historical and is really sort of a cross between a Euro game and a wargame. It plays with either 2 players or ideally 4 players. Card driven with only 3 cards per faction. Random turn order, odd dice, and is basically an area control game (with cubes). Sort of has RISK feel to it but much more going on. Overall, it's pretty light but fun. I get the appeal. I would like to try it with 4 players for a enjoyable beer & pretzels eve. Very nice mounted board, fun event cards, naval aspect and Indian/Hessian/French elements add flavor.

I played two more scenarios from Old School Tactical. In "The Commissar Order," the Germans are advancing with infantry and a few light vehicles, with Russian army and NKVD defending in a church-cemetery position. This was a complete blow-out for the Germans. But the tide turned in "Sitting Ducks," where three Panzers have run out of fuel and are waiting for the next supply convoy. Instead, the Russians come swarming up over the horizon, with some intense infantry vs. armor melee actions following. In the end, the Russians took out all the tanks, though they suffered heavy losses.

I finally got my copy of Secret Hitler to the table at an Oktoberfest party over the wknd. We had 9 players and played it a few times. Fun party game for 5-10 players. Set in the early 30's in Germany.
