I've been working on a Barsoom themed retro-clone RPG called Warriors of the Red Planet. Actually it is much broader than just Burrough's Mars, it spans the entire genre of Sword & Planet as portrayed in the early 20th century. I'm doing layout and art and it's getting close to done. If all goes well it will be ready in time for Dundracon 2013. originaleditionfantasy.blogspot.com/2013/01/wotrp-preview-egg-of-crepsys.html

I've been watching this project with a great deal of interest, too.

Whoa! Awesome stuff!
You did the illustrations yourself? Man, you've got the chops.

Looks great. Speaking as one who is planning to attend Dundracon, is there any chance you might run a session of WotRP there? If so, I'd love to play!

Thanks guys, glad to see there is still some interest.
I didn't book any sessions, but I'd consider running it in the open gaming area.

Wow! What happened? That's 4x the original price!
The original price tag was most definately around $4 Fin. I'm not sure when it changed.

Still totally worth it. I'd pay $20 today, knowing what's in it. It's a really clean system and well_skinned for sword n planet, imho. The book is literally all you'd need for many campaigns.

Wow, sorry for being over a month late in responding. Yes, it was available for a very brief time at a dramatically reduced price. Part of it was my own stupidity in setting up the pricing, and also it was just a fun fan-project, but I got a lot of heat from those who said it was awesome and totally deserved to be priced correctly. I'm not planning on reducing the price anytime soon, it has been selling steady since being launched. (by no means am I making a profit if you measure my time as a freelance artist vs. what it makes, so it is still definitely just a for-fun endeavor, but it does justify my putting some more time into it) I do want to support it with more cool supplements, adventures, and stuff.

Well, I bought mine and now am impatiently waiting on you to create those "cool supplements, adventures, and stuff."

The only thing I don't like about this game is that it is so perfect I am not sure which to run; this or Warrior, Rogue & Mage. This is such an awesome tribute to the genre and with simplicity hits all of those sweet spots that a lot of flashier products totally miss.

I was just reading through Warriors of the Red Planet again, and, upon reading about potential plans for supplements, et al. I was going to ask if there was anything soon in the pipeline for this awesome game...

Thomden ran a WotRP adventure at a con somewhere (memory hazy) and I've seen the cover posted. Maybe this will be for sale soon.
I think we have a thread on it here, or maybe on DF.

This is truly a great game! I too like it because of it's simplicity but this takes nothing away from it's flavor. I look forward to any supplements and adventures that may be coming. Cheers

So nobody has mentioned here that this game is out of Beta. Available on Lulu and DTRPG as a PDF and POD. Ordered my print copy at the beginning of the week. Hope to see it soon.

Been a while since I've thought about this Rpg. I've got a copy of the beta kicking around but I never got around to playing it.
What's changed with the official release (besides the trade dress)? Any rules tweaks or pagecount increases?

Wow! I was all but unaware of this book. Being a fan of the Mars books, and TSR's short-lived game book, I'll definitely have to get a copy of this. Especially after seeing those page previews. The war bikini in the adventuring gear made me chuckle. Actually, the lulu link seems to not be working? It says the product was not found.

Just ordered it. I am a sword-and-planet paperback JUNKIE. A complete degenerate... It's sad, really. My problem has gotten so bad I've burned through Mom & Dad's liquor cabinet (Burroughs), moved on to the hard stuff (Lin Carter), did some things I might regret later just for another sip (John Norman), and now I'm hitting the bathtub gin that might strike me blind or give me a "Jake leg" (Dray Prescott).
Really looking forward to reading this. The recommendation from the (Always entertaining and inspiring) Swords & Stitchery blog is what finally sold me.

My promised review:
1) It's a variant of '74 OD&D so it's very, very simple, modular, and customisable.
2) It's not a straight-up Barsoom RPG but rather a toolkit you can use to build your own Sword & Planet campaign. However, it includes pretty much everything you would need to run a by-the-books Burroughs campaign if you wished.
3) There are some very interesting choices among the PC races, like sentient animals (John Carter's faithful pet Woola, or Lovecraft's Cats from Saturn), Ray Bradbury's Ancient Martians, Hawkmen of Mongo, and Synthetic Men.
4) There is a Vornheim-like selection of random charts in the back for generating names, ancient ruins, flora, and random adventures. These are aces and I was left wanting even more.
5) There's a very nice airship combat section. Very cool. I'm straight-up lifting this for use in my Crypts & Things campaign.
6) There's an optional Sorcerer class with an appropriately weird flavor. They mutate with each level and eventually start to resemble the freak wizards of Thundarr the Barbarian or Lankhmar.
7) Psions and Scientists are handled more-or-less like magic-users from D&D, with scientists having power-hungry gadgets that can only be used a number of times per day rather than spells. This sounds awkward but the execution looks solid.
8) There's an extensive bibliography of the S&P genre, obviously written by a hardcore fan as it includes some pretty obscure stuff. They show some brass balls by including John Norman's (Once mainstream but these days almost taboo to mention) Gor novels.
9) The art is really polished for an OSR product.
10) There is absolutely no fat. It's a slim book but it's all "Muscle" that's actually used to play the game. No bad fan-fic or "We have to get this to hardcover size" padding here.
11) A lot of the monsters have a "2nd ed Gamma World" vibe to them (I'm wearing a GW t-shirt as I type this, so that's a compliment).I don't know if those critters are from S&P novels I haven't read yet or if they're creations of the author.
12) Holy crap "War bikini" is on the equipment list. LOL Awesome.
This is a really solid addition to the OSR cannon and a must-buy for fans of the genre. I think it would be a complete blast to run a game of this with multiple GM's, each one picking a different planet in the solar system, and the PCs being able to occasionally travel between worlds via rocketship.
