Received my copies. I am very satisfied with the way the piece on the Hyberborean Laboratories came through. Scott made the right calls, in particular choosing between a map separate from the magazine and one bound to it (which defaulted to the latter): the loose map would have been lost by many. Such as it is, it will stay with the writeup, and that's the good call, ultimately.
Now I have some reading to do! Can't wait to find out what the other contributors came up with!

For anyone interested the re-release of AFS Issue# 1 is progressing. When this issue originally came out it was pretty raw (paper cover, 1 sided printing, font issues etc.). There are some good articles in it and I wanted to make it available again in an improved format. It's still a few weeks or so out, but will include an alternate cardstock cover, double sided printing, improved font, fixed typos, alternate fiction story and perhaps some other changes. I got the new covers back from the printer yesterday. This will available direct or through Black Blade Publishing at next year's GaryCON & NTXRPGCON. I'll post more on this when things progress further. Thanks!

I got my copy of # 3 a couple of days ago, and it's really good! Reminds me of old Judges' Guild products. Very well done!

Now accepting submissions for AFS zine #4. I have received already some cool sounding ideas for articles that people are working on. Submissions can be sent to srmoberly -at-yahoo.com. No deadline has been set as of yet. Also - I hope to have more updates on the re-release of the improved/premium edition of AFS zine#1 soon (color cardstock cover, double sided printing, new added art, alternate fiction piece, replacement of a sub-standard article with an improved piece etc.) - Scott/Scaly

For whatever odd reason, I have never read much REH, but I am a huge fan of Lovecraft and weird tales, so I'm able to follow it pretty well. This dungeon is well-done, well-organized, appears quite playable, and the layout and room descriptions are really enticing. In other words, this dungeon was worth the price of the magazine alone! I'd love to submit for AFS # 4, but I just started on a new novel, so I'm not sure about my time/schedule. Thanks much! Keith

I had the chance to read the issue as well. I enjoyed it very much.
Loved the ogre slugs, the descriptions picked from CAS and the ideas Jason Zavoda shared with them, which I found very inspirational, the list of treasure will certainly save some time and sprung a few ideas for more in my game, I liked the ambiance of Into the Black Kingdoms quite a bit, the cult of silence gave me an idea for a spin-off deity for my campaign, and the were-shark totally would see some use in some isolated cult of a Hyperborean jungle island populated with forlorn descendants of the indigenous people of Polynesia (links with Mu and Lemuria come to mind).
It was totally win-win, and I loved it. Thanks and well done everyone!

I noticed there were some monsters in AFS #3. What game system are they written for? Looks like AD&D 1e, but I’m not certain.

Why do you suppose AFS has attracted an ASSH article or two in every issue? Coincidence? Indicative of ASSH’s popularity? Or just, it happened once, and happened again, and now ASSH folks just think of it as a natural place for ASSH articles?

I personally love what Scott is doing; the spirit and tone of AFS is a perfect match for AS&SH, I think. I won't speak for scaly, but I think there is a mutual admiration, and hopefully the trend you note, Falc, will continue for many issues to come! Cheers, Jeff T.

I agree definitely with what Ghul says above. AS&SH is a game that I own and admire and fits directly into this zines intended wheel house (as it relates to Hyperborea written about by CAS etc and pulp sword & sorcery). The stated goal/direction/purpose etc of the magazine from the outset was for it to be centered around the worlds, writing, flavor of 4 central authors,(REH, CAS, HPL and Jack Vance) and also to have a fiction element such as the early Dragon magazines, with the fiction element mostly being stories written in the 1890s - 1940. (Not kitchen sink D&D)
I think that so far the articles printed have stayed mainly true to the above goal.
As far as editions and stat blocks for monsters and in adventures I have mainly gone with a sort of generic old school approach. Most of us on these boards or that would read an obscure fanzine such as this have likely been DMing for years and a minor conversion to whatever particular game system they are playing hopefully isn't a big deal. I am hoping to at least become more standardized in the format in the future for listed stat blocks. Thanks, good questions

What is AS&SH? I'm a big fan of HPL and REH, so I'd be curious if this is a D&D-like RPG based on "weird tales".
Thanks, Keith
