Has anyone tried it? It feels really abstract (in the good old school sense) even with the Backgrounds included. The fact that they have just 4 classes -until now that is- (of which the Rogue is mostly unnecessary IMO) gives a nice OD&D feeling.
Any thoughts?

I haven't tried it, but my experiences with it would suggest it would work just fine. I do, however, like the Warlock...

I do, however, like the Warlock... I think they've pulled back both the Warlock and the Sorcerer on the latest packet and incorporated the Monk As for the Specialty-less game I too think it will run smoothly and more closer to the oldschool vibe. I'm wandering though (and that's how I first conceived the question) what will happen if one player decides to go Feat-less and another one with all options included...One of their design goals was modularity and I think I can recall an interview which stated that this kind of basic/advanced gameplay would simultaneously supported... It's probably too early but I hope they haven't given up on this. It will be a no-sell for me 100%

The thing is that WotC really is coming through on their promise to make the game modular. Things like "feats" and "skills" are in there, but if you eliminate them for all characters the game seems to run just fine. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with how they have done this.

Yeah, let's just hope they stick to it.
The real test would be if you played a guy without specialties in a convention game, with everybody else taking them, and did just as well (if not better.) Because then it boils down to player skill.

I suspect that this would be hard to GM, since different characters would play by different rules at the same time. It would be interesting. GM: You're being chased by Wargs. Players (together): We climb a tree! GM: Player A make a DEX roll, player B a "climb" skill check. An interesting notion... ;D
