Yup, looks like Lucas is selling off all of Lucasfilm, including Star Wars, Indy, ILM, and Skywalker Sound to Disney.
And they announced a new film trilogy, first movie out in 2015.
Thoughts?

Leia is going to be up there on the Disney Princess float with Snow White and Cinderella!

More than a new trilogy. They seem to be indicating there will simply be more movies, as in, no end in sight.
Also, I have to wonder if with Lucas not in control anymore, will they see the demand for the unaltered original films and release them? Hopefully there's not some insane stipulation that they cannot do so.

Given the enormous and very visible resentment of Lucas' stewardship of the franchise (i.e., of the prequels, whose every minute was almost without exception unbearable) and the high quality-ceiling set by genre pictures like The Avengers which marry powerhouse properties to thoughtful directors who are genuine fans, I think there's reason for optimism. I have no doubt that part of Disney's strategy with these upcoming Star Wars pictures is to do right by fans; if the headlines say something like "Star Wars Returns to Form, Woos Disenchanted Adults, Kids Alike," I imagine that'll signal a gigantic return on their $4 billion investment.

I'm shocked by what appears to be such a paltry price tag, only a little over half of what was paid for Pixar 6 years ago. The IP appears much more valuable than that and the add-ons substantial: the HQ in the Presidio, ILM's business, presumably Skywalker Ranch, a bucketful of patents in the digital FX realm...
With Marvel in the fold as well, Disney has assembled an amazing portfolio.

Keep in mind that Lucas now owns something like 3% of Disney.

It is quite the octopus. On the one hand, something like the Pirates movie makes me think it will be a great thing for SW. And eventually Lucas or his heirs would have sold or licensed the IP away. On the other hand, unlike the pre-SW period which was untouched until the prequels, there's a giant universe of EU novels which I really can't see them totally invalidating. I fear what they'll pick out of that lot, and how long they'll run out the story.

SW+Disney could mean seeing something like this. Note: that Yoda does not have a lightsaber. Improved already!

It will be interesting to see if they really do movies 7-9 or a "reboot" of some sort. The first movie is old enough that I can almost see them recasting and doing them again with newer actors and better CGI. My preference would be to have them take the original Zahn "Thrawn trilogy" and make movies out of them so that they could use Mark Hammil/Carrie Fisher/Harrison Ford in their original roles, but my guess is that they will come up with totally new plotlines. Could be interesting, however they choose to do it.

Doesn't thrawn take place within a decade of return? Seems they may be a bit old to run with that. Disney said that they are running with a new story for the films. So that probably excludes most of the extended universe stuff. And hopefully they come up with something more original than throw jedi-sith cycle which seems to repeat in throw movies and tor.

For me, Star Wars is about Luke, Han, and Leia having adventures in outer space with the Force. If I had my way, Disney would do the following:
1. Hire a bunch of people to work on Star Wars who are mostly unfamiliar with Star Wars. ("Star Wars? Oh, yeah. I saw one or two of those back in the 70s when I was a kid. I liked them. I haven't really thought about Star Wars since then.") Anyone with his name in the credits of the prequels need not apply. Anyone who has worked on an EU publication also need not apply.
2. Refresh the memory of the new blood by showing them the original, non-CGIed Star Wars film from 1977.
3. Then give them the following instruction: "What you just saw is all that exists for Star Wars. Ignore everything else with the words "Star Wars" on it. Now go cast some new actors as Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2. Then make some movies of them having adventures."
I am cautiously optimistic that something like this might happen eventually, but I do not think that this will happen until after Disney releases some truly dire Star Wars films.

I will praise Disney, if and only if they release the original 3 movies *affordably*, 'cause I'll be dashed if I have to shell out 70 or more USD for each of the DVDs, as is the case now. (insert very angry emoticon here.)

Considering how well Disney has handled Marvel I have hope in this. Yes, Lucas remains as a 'creative consultant' but that also means Disney gets to override his lame ideas. Imagine Star Wars without Midichlorians, Jar-Jar or Ewoks. Hell, Star Wars without Lucas' ego is appealing.

^---- Hey, what's wrong with Ewoks?? Best thing about Ewoks was they got my little sister interested in Star Wars back in the day.

Ewoks would have been alright had Lucas went with his original idea of making them Wookies. I have a hard time with teddy bears taking out a highly trained legion of the Empire's best troops.

Stormtroopers have never been particularly good at shooting the thing they're aiming at! The story I heard is that it was originally Wookies, but because the little person actors of Hollywood are so well-organized, it was a lot easier to find dozens of small actors than dozens of 7-footers. Also I imagine they saved a lot of money on faux fur for the costumes...

I think that overall Lucas did a decent job of marketing the franchise to a diverse demographic, and clearly the kids liked JarJar and Ewoks. On the other hand, these elements did weaken the overall story, so it's hard to say if it was a good idea or not. Sold a lot of toys, though, which got a lot of kids interested in Star Wars.

Personally; I hope they do one of 2 things (or perhaps both; eventually...) 1. Make a movie(s) or TV series about new heroes working for the Rebel Alliance during the war against the Empire. 2. Make a movie(s) or TV series about the rise of the Alliance and the early Empire. In either/both cases; I would use as little as possible of the characters from the Movies....no need for Luke/Han/Leia/etc.; except perhaps as cameos......and for the love of God; no need for R2 and C3PO to have been involved in EVERY MAJOR EVENT IN GALACTIC HISTORY! Frankly; while I really enjoyed the Thrawn series; I think you'd have to recast the parts of Luke, Han, Leia, etc. as the series is set 5 years after the end of Return of the Jedi and these actors are all 60+ (or close to it)....and I'd rather not deal with that; however having Harrison Ford show up as Han's Charming Rogue of a Dad or Carrie Fisher as a wise Aunt to a young Leia in a cameo role...something like that would be fine. I really, really like the idea of a live-action TV series about a band of Heroes working with the Alliance; and perhaps a villian; trained in the Force by Darth and/or The Emperor. Just my thoughts anyway!

Most of the kids I have asked who have an opinion hate Jar Jar with a passion. As I've been subbing in elementary schools since the prequel trillogy first released,. Once they hit about 8-9 years old, Jar Jar becomes annoying. My 13 and 8 YO boo him when he appears in Clone Wars episode... Ewoks, however, don't engender near as much hate.

I didn't like Ewoks when I was a kid, but a lot of that was probably down to wishing he'd used Wookies instead. That would have made sense. I actually found Ewoks pretty creepy - kind of like cannibal headhunter pygmies, but with teddybear pyjamas.
