Vangelis takes a different tack. Keeping his head down somewhat submissively and not making eye contact, he plays for time until the rest come with their oil.
"O Dragon, these kobolds, these lizard-men, they call you Mother. You must enjoy a good deal of adulation here. You seem well-spoken, however. Your children, certainly they provide no real challenge to your intellect. You must yearn for news from the surface? Tell us, O Dragon, what is your name? Why do you keep yourself hidden in this place, surely it is not a place for a queen."

The referee was on the very cusp of trying the Dragon's breath weapon, but what dragon would not respond to such flattery??
There is a drawn out pause before the dragon replies.
"You speak most sensibly, Human. Perhaps I will keep you -- If I like the look of you. Come hither where I can cast an eye upon you, and we can be properly acquainted."

Vangelis will go thither, but just thither enough that we may cast an eye on one another, hoping it can provide some distraction.

The Herald chafes at the delay in initiating combat but he will give the others a bit more time to return with oil before the fun starts.

Vangelis moves bravely forward to stand in the archway and peer into the dargon's lair while everybody else holds back.
From the archway he spies the full extent of the misty chamber illuminated as it is from above by the orange-ivory cast of the gathering dusk outside. He sees no dragon, at first, however... but then his ear catches the hiss of reptile breath very nearby and he jerks about to find the creature clinging to the stonework overhead, its wings and tail flattened out on the wall and its long neck gliding down so that its awful jaws are dangerously near him.
Ref makes a reaction roll to determine how the dragon judges the look of Vangelis... [2d6=5].
Vangelis has a +1 reaction adjustment due to his high charisma, making a result of 6 (which would normally make an uncertain reaction), but the ref already has the dragon in a suspicious frame of mind tipping the result down the scale by one step to a negative reaction...
"You're an ugly thing," hisses the dragon, offended "And you smell like mule carrion! "
It arches its neck into an aggressive position.
Vangelis. The dragon intends to attack. There is no surprise on either side. What do you intend to do?
edit: provided more detail on the reaction roll.

Vangelis can see little else to try but to swing his weapon at the beast's head.

As soon as The Herald perceives that combat has been joined, he will race into the fray!

Vangelis swings his mace at the monster just as its head dives forward to make a snapping bite attack, but the two attacks deflect one another and neither is harmed.
Initiative is rolled [1d6; Vangelis=5, Dragon=5] and attacks fall simultaneously.
Vangelis swings with his mace [1d20=15] versus the dragon's AC 4 he needs a score of 16, it's a miss (a fighter would have hit!). The dragon's bite attack [1d20=6] is also a miss.
What actions for next round everybody?

OOC: Ways, was there any response to my earlier post about The Herald examining the stone archway and looking for a way to bring the dragon down from there? See the bold comments below. Before The Herald has delivered his speech, a sinuous reptilian neck slides unexpectedly down from above the arch so that the smallish dragon head attached to it gets a good eye-full of the group in the passage before quickly darting back out of view.
"You keep such raggedy company, Heraldofman," sneers the dragon with amusement, "Little wonder that you sulk in the shadows like a thief." The Herald laughs mirthlessly. "Who is skulking in the shadows right now before me? Little wonder that your idea of civil conversation is insults thrown from behind your hiding place. You disappoint me, tho' I must wonder why I expected more from your kind in the first place." Then turning back to the others, again hissing in a low whisper, "If you plan to run, do it now. I'd know who fights at my side before I deliver this worm back to the hells." OOC: How tall is the arch? In the torchlight, can I determine how sturdy it is? Wondering what it would take to bring it down. Anything nearby, other than The Herald's sturdy shoulder, that I could use to barrel into it?

Apologies Sully -- I had answered in my head, just not in fact!
The arches are old and worn stonework, full of pocks and scars, but they will be good and strong for years yet. A shock from a battering ram or catapult shot might bring one down, but a Man's shoulder? Not unless he be a giant could he collapse the arches!
Alas, the passage is free of any battering ram sized logs. You would have to locate on in the swamp outside.

Vangelis continues to give battle, with The Herald and Gaspard moving in to support him while the others cower back in the passage way. Maleveque has to convince the extremely agitated lizardman to hold fast.
The Dragon leaps from the stone work with a powerful thrust of its wings, going into a tight backward roll through the air with Gaspard taking a swipe as it takes flight, but only hitting air. Almost immediately after the monster has turned over itself in midair and rushes directly back at Vangelis. The pair exchange blows but once again each is turned on the other's strong armour. But now Vangelis has The Herald in support, and the grim cleric puts a mace blow into the wyrm's ribs.
Initiative is rolled [1d6; Vangelis=4, The Herald=1, Gaspard=5, Dragon=4].
Attacks are rolled in order of initiative; Gaspard [1d20=2], followed by the Dragon and Vangelis simultaneously [2d20=2, 2], followed by The Herald [1d20=20!]. Only The Herald scores a hit for [1d6=1] 1 hit point.
What next, bold dragon slayers?

The Herald smiles, a terrible grin. Could he actually be enjoying this? "Enjoy your last moments on this earth, wyrm. The Hells beckon." He presses the attack. OOC: Natural 20 and only 1 HP of damage? I think I've found an error in the rulebook...

OOC: I'm gonna go with dropped, near my feet. Let's assume for convenience that Vangelis handed his torch to Mot before he "went hither" into the dragon's lair.

Mot shouts, in the language of Law (which he knows that Gaspard and Vangelis speak, and perhaps our new ally The Herald, but hopefully not the Dragon):
"I'm ready with oil but afraid I'll hit one of you - maneuver behind the dragon!"

In light of Mot's direction, VANGELIS will use mace and shield defensively to maneuver behind the dragon instead of an outright attack.

Gaspard
It's unlikely Gaspard will be able to change direction, having committed himself to the attack, but if it's possible to slip under or away from the dragon after his own attempted strike, he will do so with great haste and bated breath.

"I'm ready with oil but afraid I'll hit one of you - maneuver behind the dragon!" A rather tricky business seeing that the dragon has flight and is at least as quick as the players! But we shall see...

Maleveque continues to restrain the charmed lizard man in the passage, out of sight of the fighting (but certainly not out of earshot) while Jaras loiters idly by, doing nothing for the reputation of the small folk's courage!
In the lair Gaspard scores only a glancing blow on the slippery reptile as it retreats out of range with a forceful push from its wings and simultaneously unleashes a jet of acid from its maw that cuts a searing arc right through The Herald (retribution for his recent blow), Gaspard and Vangelis!
The Gods indeed must favour The Herald for he suffers "only" critical burns while Vangelis and Gaspard are both dissolved into smouldering heaps of roiling slag!
The Herald attempts to retaliate with his mace, but alas the dragon is out of reach.
Initiative is rolled [1d6; dragon=3, The Herald=2, Vangelis=1, Gaspard=5].
Gaspard strikes first [1d20=15] but misses -- again by just one 1 pip. If only he was a fighter!
The dragon launches itself backward and fires its breath weapon. The Herald is targeted specifically as retribution for the blow he most recently dealt, but each of the others present (including Mot who is preparing to throw his oil-bomb from the archway) will also be hit on a d6 roll of 1-2 (1d6; Mot=4, Vangelis=2, Gaspard=2). The agony! The Herald, Vangelis and Gaspard will all share the same fate.
Saving throws versus breath weapon are rolled for The Herald, Vangelis and Gaspard (1d20; The Herald=18, Vangelis=13, Gaspard=2) but only The Herald saves. Gaspard and Vangelis suffer the full 11 hit points, and are slain, while The Herald suffers only half damage, 5 hit points. He has 1 hit point remaining.
The Herald survives to deliver his own attack [1d20=2] but alas, the dragon is out of range.
What next?
