Noble Knight is having a sale, so Maze of Peril is currently 10% off ($8.96 + shipping). Sale is ending soon (meant to post this earlier). Nine copies currently in stock. Here's the direct link: Maze of Peril at Noble KnightIf you are unfamiliar, this is J. Eric Holmes' 1986 D&D novel featuring Boinger the Halfling & Zereth the Elf, the same characters from his three short stories in Dragon magazine. It's still cheaper if you order from the original publisher, but you will have to send check or money order unlike NK which takes cards & PayPal. See here for more info on ordering from the publisher.

Well, just one dollar. They generally have sales a few times a year, I should have mentioned that in my original post but I didn't know they would still have it in stock. The original stock at NK sold out after I posted it on my blog, and these are a later re-stock.

Yeah, just kidding. Given where I live the price of the actual stuff pales in comparison to the price of the shipping!

Well, that was fast. My Want List alerted me that it is back in stock. 40 copies currently & the Fall sale is ongoing on so the price is still $8.96. (BTW, I have no financial interest in these selling or in NK).

A copy of Dr. Holmes Maze arrived in the mail today, the wife took it from greedy pudgy hands right away, She put it into "the stocking hung by the chimney with care", leaving me with the "hope that St. Nicholas soon will be there"

...But derv snuck in and stole a read of the first chapter in the dark, so there! I tried to suggest that I should probably look the copy over before it got wrapped, just in case it might need to be returned.............it didn't fly

It's a fun book — feels a lot like the play-by-post games here and round about, if you edited them up a bit. The (continued) Boinger and Zereth stories in The Dragon are some of my favorites.

The (continued) Boinger and Zereth stories in The Dragon are some of my favorites. I should go back and reread Holmes' stories, haven't looked at them in years. Glancing at my list I see that I have Trollshead, The Sorcerer's Jewel and In the Bag; there's also a mention of one called The Adventure of the Lost City which was printed in Alarums & Excursions circa 1976, but sadly I don't have that one. I believe that it might have been reused in The Maze of Peril. A collected version of the Boinger and Zereth stories would be lovely to see, even if only as an ebook. I wonder what the chances of that might be?

I wonder what the chances of that might be? I've read those three from Dragon magazine — in fact, "Sorcerer's Jewel" was in the first issue of Dragon that I ever bought — but I was unaware of the fourth story you mention. A collection, digital or otherwise, would be wonderful — perhaps Zenopus has some connections that could help get that going?

Here's the scoop on Holmes' contributions to the venerable zine Alarums & Excursions: Prior to the publication of the Basic rulebook, Holmes submitted a number of articles to A&E. Some are stories that feature Boinger, Zereth and/or other characters from Maze of Peril. They are not polished stories like the later Dragon articles, but are much more like the better campaign journals that are written up in places like this board. "The Adventure of the Lost City" is the longest of these, having two parts in two different issues. These are the fiction submissions (from the Bibliography posted here):

I just heard back from Lee. He has graciously consented to allow the scanning any of his back issues of A&E, including #'s 17 and 19, for free if he is provided a copy. Unfortunately he is located in LA. I'm there 2 or 3 times a year but won't be there any time soon. Does any "true fan" want to step up to the plate? You'll have to provide your own scanner and both issues are ~150 pages each. I'd bet a bag of GP the folks here would chip in to you'uns if you'd do us a solid and scan those bad boys. Gene, FYI, Lee is a woman. She very graciously did me a favor (at my expense) and photocopied issues #1-20 of A&E for me a number of years back, so i do have the source material in my office, but with the understanding that I was not to disseminate copies. The thing is, I believe the rights for submissions to A&E remained with the authors, so copyright would go to the good doctor's estate. I have typed up one submission, Bill Paley's account of gaming with Dave Arneson in 1975, that I put up in my blog. If Dr. Holmes's estate were okay with it, I could do the same with his stories.
