The latest rumor going around was that WotC was pushing for huge lists of modifiers and stats for practically everything and Monte Cook actually didn't think that was a good idea. If true, I'd have to say I would have quit under the same circumstances.

If true, that would be a tough spot to be in. Stay, and do one's best to influence the game as best one can? Or leave, hoping my departure makes an impression on the decision makers?
Yeah, the latter is not likely. I work in healthcare and sometimes the folks making the decisions seems so disconnected to what their professional staff is doing or needing.

The modifiers' rumor seems pretty fishy to me, simply because: - it comes from a former WotC's employee
- Monte Cook is not a rules-light man himself

It looks like Cook leaving 5e development is the best thing that could have happen. I'm quite happy with the edition. Oh, I have plenty of criticisms, but compared to 4e it's a masterpiece of design and respect of the history of D&D.
Character creation is excruciating though and the organization of the PHB is a mess.

This is a necro, yikes.
But Monte left because he did not like the massive shift that occurred halfway through development. He had big issues with the business model and corporate branding of the game, where the actual game was going to be second fiddle to IP (like FR), Video/Computer Games, etc. The types of products and support. He wasn't into "Corporate D&D". At the same time WOTC went through and "cleaned house" - James Wyatt (IMO-the most talented creative person at WOTC over the last 20 years) left the D&D Team (for M:TG), the Art & Visuals Director (Schindhette...sp?) was "let go" as well as others. People Monte had worked with for years. According to post exit talk (which was very little, due to contractual reasons) he was actually looking to bring the game back to it's early roots- an Anti 3E if you will.
At the time I was glad to see him go, because I didn't know any of this or how it would turn out.
In retrospect, I'm sorry I felt that way, because I really can't get jazzed for 5E, the WOTC business model, the 5E "culture" or community and I would like to have seen what Monte did with it from a design standpoint.
He also had nothing to do with 4E, so I don't see why anyone would have criticized him for that?

In retrospect, I'm sorry I felt that way, because I really can't get jazzed for 5E, the WOTC business model, the 5E "culture" or community and I would like to have seen what Monte did with it from a design standpoint. That's what finally put me off 5e once and for all. Not the rules, which are adequate as presented (but I'm in the minority and feel the DnD Next playtest did more right than the finished product. I consistently upvoted the stuff that brought it in line with 0e thru 2e but few of those aesthetics made the cut) but the "culture" or the fact that it's considered a "fandom" or a "community" instead of a "hobby". Check out the stark contrast between the DnD Subreddit and the OSR Subreddit. That tells the tale. The latter is filled with people enthusiastic about playing a game and tinkering with the rules and expectations, trying to refine and conceptualize the hobby. The former is essentially a fan art repository. And for some reason 80% of it is Tieflings. One thing I learned way back in high school is that things aren't cool and edgy anymore if everyone does them. They took the sex and drugs out of rock n roll! Nothing but love and respect to anyone who actually is enthusiastic about playing or DMing any edition of any RPG they want, but I'll personally skip on the Lifestyle Brands and keep gaming. tl;dr Monte Cook did nothing wrong.
