I was digging around in the attic and found this book I had picked up at a used book store for $3. I had forgotten all about it. It's called "An Atlas of Fantasy" by J.B. Post. It's a 200+ page tome of maps and descriptions taken from literature and folklore. It's by no means exhaustive, but it includes a number of topics and maps of interest to gamers. Including Tolkien's Middle-earth, Burroughs Barsoom, Clark Ashton Smiths Hyperborea, Vance's Dying Earth, Lovecraft's Dreamland, Terry Brooks the Four Lands, etc. All the maps seem to be taken from the sources, so they are all of differing quality. The book was published in 1979 by Ballantine Books. This may be worth looking for on Amazon if you're looking for ideas for your next campaign, have a general interest in maps, or want a supplement to your Appendix N library. I'm unaware of any other collection like this book.

Doesn't happen to have any Dunsany in it, does it? Maps in particular...

Yes, the content of my book seems to mirror your list exactly Finn. On the cover it says "New, Revised Edition". There seems to have been a previous edition from 1973. Of particular interest, my book seems to have been personally given to Stephanie by Santa Clause himself on the Christmas of 1979 . That autograph has to add to the value of this book beyond its explicit usability for gaming.

Wikipedia reports that 12 maps were dropped from the '73 edition and 14 were added to the '79 one, but I can't find my copy at the moment so I can't double-check to see which ones. Wikipedia helpfully doesn't say which ones were added or dropped.

I believe I read one edition of this and always wanted a copy. The distinctive thing I remember about the book I read was that one of the maps was done by a little girl who died young; her father published a limited run book of her drawings, maps, and stories as a memorial to her.
The book I did buy was more of an encyclopedic work with few full-page maps, but lots of smaller inset maps and a lot of entries from travel fantasies from the 15th through 18th centuries. I think it's the Dictionary of Imaginary Places, but I don't have it handy to verify.

How are the leigh brackett mars maps?? I've never seen a map based on her mars before and I think her solar system stuff has some of the best gaming potential as far non-burroughs sword&planet stuff goes.

How are the leigh brackett mars maps?? I've never seen a map based on her mars before and I think her solar system stuff has some of the best gaming potential as far non-burroughs sword&planet stuff goes. they are clear and concise. I'm not sure what type of detail you're looking for, but they include all the major geography, cities, and ruins. Basically, the map is two circles (eastern & western hemisphere) with the cardinal compass directions surrounding them. there is only one page dedicated to this map. hope this helped.

I sort of got the impression in reading Brackett that her Mars and Venus differ from story to story, in history and in geography. While staying within a general concept.
