I can certainly suggest something NOT to include. Please not another post-apoc setting in America. If there is to be any setting material in the rules, please make it vague enough to be anywhere. The US has been done to death and some of us (the minority I know) are not from there and so just don't relate all that well.

LET THE PLAYERS HAVE GUNS, PLEASE!!!! I'm so sick of post apoc settings not letting starting characters have firearms! And I don't mean flintlocks, I mean assault rifles! Make ammo a REAL treasure!

Maybe...depends on the Referee and the type of apocalypse in mind. There will be three classes (initially) - the Warrior, the Skulk and the Lorekeeper. There will be three basic archetypes too - Human, Mutated Human and Mutated Animal.

Lots of room for a level based PA game. Mental powers based on level could be cool. Plan on a oneshot or a couple setting follow ups like the woodland books got? Almost every subgenre opens itself to booklet. Teenage Mutant Cavemen, 50's Atomic Zombies, Hippy New agers vs robo fascists, an unedning war and more of course.

Mental powers, for sure. Personally, I would prefer a more John Wyndham or Tripods feel than Mad Max or gonzo.

I suppose you are right; gonzo has been done a bit to death and setting it in the UK would meet one of the above suggestions too. I think I'll need to tinker with what I've done so far but it might work...

No Autarchs, just Primarks - now there's a title for a wastelands robber baron.

I think I'll need to tinker with what I've done so far but it might work... I agree, gonzo PA has really lost its shine for me. I was talking with a friend last night who asked me if I could make a movie, what genre would it be. I said PA because there is a sad lack of decent PA movies out there (as a look through the list by decade on Wikipedia clearly shows). I then went on to say that probably my all time favourite is the British TV series of Day of the Triffids from the 80s. Just nice to see something that isn't full of mohawks and motorbikes, or mutants and laser pistols, or dripping with Religion. Give me gritty and "realistic" PA any day. And that goes for an RPG too. Still, you can't please everyone, so good luck Simon.

Personally, I like settings similar to David Brin's The Postman, mostly because I grew up in rural Oregon and know the area well. The Dies the Fire series is a very interesting spin on a feudal world post disaster as well. For a not so apocalyptic future you might try The Last Centurion by John Ringo as well. These all have military themes but are good reads, and excellent source material.

Other good sources for a more UK post-apoc be the 70's BBC serial Survivors, J G Ballard's The Drowned World. Whereas most PA settings are best soundtracked by US heavy metal, I'd rather play a PA setting that was more post-punk, like Joy Division in feel.

What are tye scavengers finding in the wastelands? Old manufactured goods, highttech gear, gas? I had one campagin years back where civilization was making a come back and the most sought after scrap was the reinforcement bars inside concrete construction. Players soon realized real wealth came from supplying and protecting other "miners" and not doing it themselves.

The most sought after thing in my old PA campaign became other people - either for skills, slaves, socialising or strength in numbers. Loners didn't last long, or went insane due to isolation syndrome.

how's this coming along simon? hit any bumps the board can give some input to? It's doing okay. I've had shingles for the last 10 days (nearly gone but very painful) and before that I was at the Cheltenham Cricket Festival for nearly 2 weeks, so I've slowed down on output a bit. In addition, I'm trying to work on 5 things at once! So just bear with me... ;D www.gloscricket.co.uk/cricket/cheltenham-festival

Make ammo a REAL treasure! Yes! I have had characters ditch entire chests of rubies so they could make a grab at a handful of shotgun shells.

(chuckle) Reminds me of a comedian I recently heard, saying guns should be freely available but ammunition should be $1,000 per bullet. That way, if you used your gun, you really meant it! Note to the reading impaired: This is not a post either for or against gun control ... IT IS A JOKE! Think before you reply.

With the rising price of ammo these days, that comic may be prophetic!
