Fantasy74 Publications is now accepting contributions for Revenant Runes, a parchment-bound, digest-sized supplement for fantasy roleplaying! If you're a fan of the original fantasy RPG in it's original format, then this is for you!
We're especially interested in good concepts for:
- equipment, magical and mundane - spells - monsters - treasures & magical artifacts - tricks & traps - mini-adventures, especially site or open situation-based (no railroads!) - cool new ideas for gaming, worldbuilding, encounters, etc.
Ideas are more important than game statistics – we can help with those. There's no harm submitting something written up for your favorite game system, but an excellent paragraph or two or an evocative picture (or both) is just as good.
We are also interested in hearing from artists who might want to contribute old-school B&W line art to the product. These are some style models that especially appeal to us: Liz Danforth, Frank Frazetta, Morno, Erol Otus, Tom Wham.
This not a big-budget production and Fantasy74 Publications is not paying for submissions at this time, although you will have the glory of seeing your name in print and the satisfaction of helping to keep old-school gaming alive. However:
- All contributors will be fully credited in the product.
- All contributors will retain full rights to their submissions. This means that if you decide you want to use what you submit later for an OGL, OSRIC, or some other licensed product, or to put it into your own fantasy game system, you can do that, no strings attached. All you are giving us is the right to use your idea in Revenant Runes and to continue republishing it there for as long as we keep the book in print. This policy very much includes the art and adventures.
Fantasy74's staff has previously published gaming and non-gaming material in other venues, and includes personnel with professional layout and editorial experience, so you can be sure that your submission will wind up in a quality product.
Please contact calithena@gmail.com with all submissions and questions. Fight on!

Cal, have you had any responses to this? I've got an idea for an item that would probably only take a page or two.

We've gotten a few, but there's still plenty of room, and I'd LOVE to have some submissions from you, jreints! Rengate and I aren't going super-fast because we're both in busy times at work, but the project is happening, so send it along when it's ready!

There is good stuff - including yours! That art is perfect and the mechanics are super-nifty, so I reckon we'll be using it. Thank you!

Hey there, Cal!
You still looking for submissions for this? I have some stuff I can send you, either for this issue or another.

Hi Kesher! Good to see you here.
My partner on this project sort of vanished after leaving me with some very good stuff. I haven't been as diligent as I might have been either. So, I need to find a new motivated partner, or decide to do it myself. Haven't decided how to move forward.
However, I'd love to see what you've got...

Cool. I'll transcribe from notebooks in the next few days and send some stuff your way. Depending on what you had in mind, I might also be the motivated partner you had in mind, but we can chat more about that by email.

Will this just be OD&D or can us wierd Tekumel freaks stick in some OEPT as well?

I think it's going to be OD&D-only, although EPT is so close that some stuff (spells, monsters, adventures) would be welcome - we could make it fit.
I'm also thinking that it's going to be a series of smaller releases instead of a large one. With certain parties no longer available to help I had thought this project might just die, but I'm seeing so much enthusiasm that I don't really want to let it go just yet. So I'm mulling over my options...

Ditto; I have buckets of EPT stuff either written or in various stages of completion, just let me know what you want and I will convert it to OEPT and send it to you.

I'm also thinking that it's going to be a series of smaller releases instead of a large one. Perhaps these ideas could be the foundation for an OD&D fanzine instead of a supplement. Spread out the material, publish something every couple of months.....

I've been thinking that same thing today, Fin. It also takes the pressure off in some ways to think of it as 'just a fanzine' or whatever.
I think I'll post about this in a little bit, in a new thread.

Do we have an adventure scenario yet?
I'm thinking of typing my dungeon I made for a CON, or an article (or set of tables) to create Battle Robots for OD&D.
What should be better?
Also, would you like me to write a "DM's Challage"?

I don't know about Calithena, but I would like you to write a DM's challenge. The two you did here were fun!

I have an idea for a quick-pick DM-design-your-own wilderness encounter mini-dungeon. How many pages would you like?

Brevity is the soul of wit, but such advice is meaningless. As many pages as it takes to realize your idea in a way that an imaginative person can do the rest for him- or herself, and no more.
(But it sounds great, please do it!)

makofan, is that idea for a mini-dungeon to be placed in a wilderness or both the wilderness and the dungeon?

OK, I'll be a bit cryptic, but I first had the idea of a 5-or-6 room cave complex with 3-4 encounters, set in the deep forest. The idea was that a sacred place of nature power has been corrupted, and it has twisted the creatures that live there. A local druid encounters the characters and asks for their help in penetrating the cave complex so he can remove the taint.
Originally the cave site was going to be run by twisted pixies, with war bears and giant spiders the other monsters encountered. Of course there would be treasure and magic also. This would sort of be like the Book of Lairs encounters from Judges Guild. Anyway, I had a complete adventure outlined with plot and twists and blah blah blah. Then I thought ... why not make a system? Have a table to generate the intelligent baddy, have a table to generate associated monsters, have a table to generate the motivation of the NPC, have a table to generate the effect of the nature node, etc. A GM could then mix and match to create their own unique vision suited for the campaign, or just roll randomly and in one-minute have a good encounter that could end up taking the entire evening if they wished.
I am working out all the details right now, but I envision one page for the tables and 1 page for the map . I hope to make it more interesting than the bare sketch I gave implies

makofan, that sound very cool! The reason I asked was that I had started sketching out a wilderness area for submission and I did not want to duplicate efforts. Sounds like we're going in different directions.

If you still need dungeons for submission, I have one. It's small -- about 16 rooms in total -- but with room for expansion. News of Gary's death moved me to pull out Volumes 2 and 3 of OD&D and roll up a good old fashioned dungeon in his honor. The end result isn't specifically "Gygaxian" except in the broadest sense that it's a product of the game he created, but I'd be happy to submit it in his memory.

IMO you can never have too many dungeons or adventures - they are not only the meat of the game, you also get exposed to creative ideas from other DM's.

I wouldn't be able to get anything done by the first deadline, but maybe for the second issue I could contribute a dungeon map if there is interest in that. This would be a generic map, with no key, to be stocked by a DM (perhaps encouraged to use some randomg tables to do so).
If I did contribute a map, and folks liked it, maybe I'd be willing to do more as a regular or semi-regular contribution.
My maps are usually of the black and white variety (like the map in the AD&D DMG), rather than the traditional blue that a lot of people seem to prefer. Does this matter?
Also, my maps usually have some color on them. Not a lot, but I usually do blue for water, red for fire, and a few other colors rather than fill styles to designate stuff like that. Is the fanzine black and white only for the interior, or would a map with some color on it be ok?
Alternatively, since I hand draw all of my maps before I render them digitally, I might be able to scan a hand drawn to get really old school on ya...
Let me know whether including a dungeon map in a future issue would be of interest.
