Because I'm already working on Smith & Wesson (see other thread)(, I thought I'd further complicate things by working on a SF version of Swords & Wizardry at the same time.
This game is simply "D&D" in space. There are Dwarves (mutated humans, created for strength and toughness as labourers hundreds of years ago to work in asteroid mines and so on, but since being freed and now forming a substantial "race". There are Elves - who made an exodus from their home planet in their exotic spaceships after it was destroyed by alien invaders (Orcs?) and are still seeking somewhere to settle.
The basis of the gaming comes from The Dark Zone - a vast expanse of space where there was some huge space battle millenia ago leaving vast city-sized (and rumours say planet-sized) space wrecks just hanging there in the void, waiting to be explored and plundered.
The Zone is at the far edges of the frontier (I envisage a wild west "gold rush" feel) where lawlessness rulles and adventurers, outlaws, prospectors, miners, traders and outcasts gather. It is rough and dangerous but the rewards can be great.
The classes are pretty much per S&W - magic-users use either psionics or technomancy (choose at outset) to power their "spells". This is simply a flavour thing - the spells are per S&W, but they have a scientific-ish explanation. Same for Healers (Clerics).
Gotta go to work now. More later.

And while you are feeling creative--how about an adaptation of your old "Captain Kronos" game? I know you can't call it by that name, but you could take the general concept and make it a Gothic-era, Hammer-style, monster-bashing rpg.
Character classes could include Swordsmen or Warriors, like Kronos; Mages or Sages, like Grolsch and Van Helsing; Holy Men or Priests, like Shandor; and Scientists, like Frankenstein.
Foes could include vampires, werewolves, mummies, resurrected beings, gorgons, snake-women, witches, and zombies.

(And WOW! someone remembers my Captain Kronos RPG - that's going back some, when I was a mere amateur )

Simonw, any update on how your game is going? I have to admit that I would be very interested in running a sci-fantasy game like you described.
Also, I would very much like to learn more about your Kronos RPG.

Also, I would very much like to learn more about your Kronos RPG. I stopped work on it for a while, but I'm back on it now. The Kronos rpg, I used to have available for download on my website. It isn't up to much but if you'd like to see it, PM me with your email and I'll dig it out to send you.
