Cool stuff on thieves. Doesn't ACKS, use a similar talent system to he one described by Talysman? I guess the search for the hole left by kicking the cleric to the curb is the issue.

I thought I had taken down the classes from my blog, but both the Leech and the Apothecary are still up. These versions work a little different than the DD Leech here on the forums. The apothecary is more like an alchemist as described in U&WA; I use "alchemist" as a name for a variant Magic-User. You could swap out the thief's Cunning for a Wilderness Survival ability (tracking, find food/water, identify) to create a Hunter class, or swap it for Deceit (disguise, forgery, ciphers) to make a Spy class. I think I had the beginnings of a Tinkerer class somewhere, too. The surprise attack would have to be changed for these as well. But that's an example of what I had in mind.

I don't think the cleric class makes a lot of sense in Conan style swords and wizardry.
But it was initially added b/c someone wanted to fight vampires, Van Helsing style. I like this. I realize it is just me, but I like it.
I think, perhaps, the cleric class makes less sense the more removed it is from its primary legendarium: medieval Christendom. Undead are anti-Christians, e.g., they eat flesh / drink blood, to maintain a bodily life free from the soul rather than eat Christ in order to maintain a spiritual life despite the body. They are a kind of contrary pairing. The pairing of pre-Chrisitan mythos pagan stuff is good to badly used magic, heroes against monsters. Sure, every culture has its undead, but they are often minor in those mythoi compared with the monsters. I like undead in my D&D game, so I like clerics. I just imagine them more in a fantastical medieval Christendom than in a pre- or non-Christian legendaria like that of Conan, etc.
There is another good thread on thieves out there right now. It seems to me that thieves / clerics make more or less sense in an OD&D context based upon one's campaign goals more than anything else, especially in terms of what mythos or legendaria are the group / DM trying to engage / affect / give the vibe for, etc.

I realize it is just me, but I like it. I believe it was added because someone in Dave Arneson's campaign had a vampire PC.

Yes, sounds right. At first I wanted a "pure" s&w campaign with no cleric. But then I started really liking the "church of law against undead" feel. So I imagine an axis between monsters and magic on the one hand, and between undead and law on the other. Really, "unholy," I would include demons with undead in this regard.
