In Monsters and Treasures Assortment, Set 1, 1977 (9011), A Carrion Crawler is listed as #AT: 1. Special Attack: “A hit causes 1-8 tentacles to strike also – save vs. paralyzation for each tentacle striking.” Is it like this anywhere else?
In MTA Set One-Three 1980 (9047), it’s #AT: 8, SA: paralyzation. This is as in Holmes, 1e MM, and LL (which is surely what's in Moldvay). What is it in Monsters and Treasure? The standard, 8 attacks, I'm assuming. (Blackmoor is the only LBB I have). Thanks!
edit. oh I see from the list of all the monsters, the CC is in GH.

Checking Greyhawk, I don't see any language similar to the M&T Assortment, so it may be a misprint. However, I think I would actually run a carrion crawler this way, since I don't use the multiple attack routines of Greyhawk. Or rather, I'd have the creature pick an opponent, roll # tentacles attacking, then roll the attack with a bonus for extra tentacles beyond 1. Successful paralyzation means the crawler holds onto the victim with at least one tentacle and attacks the next target with d8-1 tentacles. Still nasty, but not as extreme as btb.

Just for your own reference, 3D6, here are the stats/description from GH: Carrion Crawler
Number Appearing: 1-6 Armor Class: 3/7 Hit Dice: 3+1 Number of Attacks: 8 tentacles Points of Damage per Attack: special Move in Inches: 12 % In Lair: 60% Treasure Type: B
These scavengers will usually attack in order to insure that there will continue to be a supply of corpses to scavenge. They are worm-shaped, about 9' in length, 3' high at their head end, and move quickly on multiple legs. Their mouths are surrounded by eight tentacles of about 2' length, and their touch causes paralization (save vs. or paralized). The Carrion Crawler is able to climb/move along walls or ceilings as readily as floors, thus allowing it to compete with Ochre Jellies, Black (or Gray) Puddings, and the like.

Number of Attacks: 8 tentacles Points of Damage per Attack: special Where are you seeing these two stats? I don't see them in my version of GH. EDIT: NM, found it in the earlier section. I wonder if there is a reference somewhere else where the change to number of tentacles occured. /EDIT For other reference, my Ready Ref Sheets have this info: CARRION CRAWLER AC: 3/7 MOVE: 12" HD: 3+1 NA: 1-6 STRIKES/DAMAGES: 8 tentacles/save vs. paralization ALIGN: N LAIR/TREAS: 60% B INT: U REFER: G39
